Yes, Lucio Fulci’s The Beyond is getting an English-language remake—but that does not mean the remake can reproduce what makes the 1981 film so unsettling. Hangtime International Pictures and Severin Films announced the project on October 8, 2026, naming it the first in a planned slate of genre remakes. The original’s particular blend of nightmare logic, vivid gore, eerie music and imperfectly uncanny presentation is exactly why it deserves to be revisited, not rebooted.

What has actually been announced?

Hangtime International Pictures and Severin Films have secured English-language remake rights to The Beyond. Their October 8 announcement identifies it as the first project in a slate of several genre remakes planned over the next two years, with theatrical, streaming and physical-media distribution described as goals for the slate. Frank Murray, Hangtime’s co-CEO, said the opportunity was to “reimagine” and “contemporize” Fulci’s film; Severin co-founder, president and CEO David Gregory said the company has spent two decades restoring and releasing genre films. Those are the partners’ ambitions, not evidence of what the finished film will be like. Irish Film Critic and Rue Morgue covered the announcement.

The announcement does not identify a director, cast or release date. The reviewed coverage likewise reports no director or stars yet, so there is no basis to say who will lead the remake or when it will arrive. The partnership’s broader slate also should not be confused with confirmed remakes of other films associated with Fulci’s Gates of Hell cycle: The Beyond is the named first project, while possible follow-ups remain speculative. Fangoria and Gizmodo note the missing production details.

What is The Beyond about?

Fulci’s 1981 Italian horror film runs 87 minutes, according to Grindhouse Releasing. A woman inherits a Louisiana hotel built over one of the gateways to Hell. Renovations stir up increasingly inexplicable deaths and supernatural events, drawing a local doctor into the unfolding horror. The film’s memorable details include an ancient book, a cursed painting, ghouls, a guide dog and a particularly disturbing tarantula attack. IFC Center also lists the film as an 87-minute 1981 release.

Why a remake may miss the point

The case against remaking The Beyond is an aesthetic argument, not a claim that no remake could ever work. Fulci’s film does not feel frightening because it follows a neatly engineered chain of explanations. Its hotel, painting, book and deaths seem to belong to the same fever dream: events arrive with the force of images rather than the comfort of a tidy mythology. A new version could retain the plot and reproduce the set pieces while losing that disorienting effect.

The atmosphere is the story

The film’s appeal rests in how its parts collide: striking cinematography, sudden gore, Fabio Frizzi’s music and an almost dreamlike disregard for ordinary cause and effect. Even the English dubbing contributes to the film’s peculiar distance from naturalistic reality. That combination is specific to this film and its moment. Modern polish might make a remake more technically seamless, but seamlessness is not necessarily an improvement when strangeness is part of the horror.

Reproducing the events is not the same as reproducing the experience

A remake can rebuild the hotel, bring back the ghouls and stage a tarantula attack. It cannot guarantee the peculiar rhythm in which those images accumulate, or the tension between graphic violence and the film’s unreal, almost abstract mood. The filmmakers may find a compelling new approach; the point is that fidelity to plot alone would not be enough. The original’s weirdness is not a flaw waiting to be corrected.
