The DECstation 2040 is a custom, business-card-size maker project that emulates a Digital Equipment Corporation DECstation 3000 on an RP2040 microcontroller. It can run DECWindows, bringing a small piece of the UNIX workstation experience to a compact board—but it is an experimental build, not a miniature original DEC computer or a ready-to-buy pocket workstation.
What is the DECstation 2040?
It is a custom hardware and software project by rscott2049. Its RP2040-based board runs a modified version of Dmitry’s LinuxCard emulator, adapted to emulate a DECstation 3000 and to add video and USB input support. The project recreates elements of a late-1980s and early-1990s UNIX workstation, rather than reproducing the original DEC hardware or matching its performance.
DECstations used MIPS processors and ran ULTRIX, Digital Equipment Corporation’s UNIX system, and DECWindows, its X-based graphical environment. The project brings that historical software experience to a much smaller modern microcontroller board. The software uses a four-port PSRAM PIO engine and PIO-driven VGA, including a separate cursor plane. The repository reports PSRAM/HyperRAM PIO bandwidth of 42 MB/s for writes and 32 MB/s for reads; these are project figures, not independently verified results.
What display resolution should you expect?
The documentation describes two different video details, so they should not be treated as a single guaranteed monitor mode. The hardware summary lists monochrome VGA at 1024 × 864. Separately, the repository says the development screen’s default video rate is 1024 × 768 at 70 Hz. The default timing describes the development setup; it does not replace the distinct resolution in the project summary.

Can an RP2040 really emulate a DECstation?
It can run this project’s DECstation 3000 emulator, including DECWindows, but “emulate” does not mean that the RP2040 is equivalent to the original workstation or that it provides a modern desktop’s speed. The project adapts LinuxCard code for the microcontroller and adds video and USB input.

The repository reports a BOGOMIPS value of 13.44 for a Linux image when using overclocking and the assembly-language CPU emulator. That is a project-reported figure under those conditions, not a general-purpose performance score or a direct comparison with an original DECstation.

Does it have working Ethernet?
The board documentation lists Ethernet RMII PHY support, but that describes hardware support, not complete network emulation. The project’s listed next steps include writing LANCE Ethernet emulation for uMIPS. The available documentation therefore does not establish that the emulator has fully working Ethernet networking.
What does it take to set up?
This is a build-and-load project, not a plug-and-play device. The repository’s setup notes direct builders to use LinuxCard software images, with ultrix.gui as the suggested image, and to load software through a debugger connected over SWD.

- Prepare a LinuxCard image, preferably
ultrix.gui, as described in the DECstation2040 repository. - Place the image on a FAT32-formatted microSD card for uMIPS.
- Select the image in the project source as instructed by the repository.
- Connect a debugger over SWD and load the software onto the board.
- Connect compatible USB HID keyboard and mouse input and a monochrome VGA display to use DECWindows.
The project uses custom hardware, and the available setup notes do not establish that a standard RP2040 development board alone is sufficient. Its external memory, video output, storage, and supporting circuitry are part of the design.
Who is this project for?
The DECstation 2040 is most compelling for people interested in retrocomputing, DEC workstations, microcontroller-based emulation, or the challenge of building custom hardware. It is less suitable for anyone looking for an assembled computer, a broadly compatible desktop, or a turnkey way to run a historical UNIX interface.
