Short answer: The Witcher 3’s 2022 Next-Gen update (version 4.0 and later builds) adds ray tracing on supported platforms, higher-detail visuals, and PC graphics options that are absent from Classic version 1.32. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, its modes target either 30 FPS with ray tracing or 60 FPS in Performance mode; Xbox Series S has 30/60 FPS target modes but no ray tracing. Those are publisher-stated targets, not guarantees of locked frame rates. This comparison covers the 2022 update—not the separate Remastered release launched in 2026.
What is the difference between Witcher 3 Classic and next-gen?
“Classic” is CD PROJEKT RED’s label for PC version 1.32. The 2022 Next-Gen update began with version 4.0; 4.0 is a version number, not a reference to 4K. Later patches changed the build, so check the version shown by your platform when comparing settings or performance. The publisher’s 2022 update notes and version support guidance describe the update and version labels.
The visual gap is chiefly in lighting, image detail, and PC graphics options. The update adds ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion on PC and current-generation consoles; compatible PC hardware can also use ray-traced reflections and shadows. It also raises detail in selected textures, vegetation, shadows, environmental effects, and draw distance. How much better a scene looks depends on the platform, settings, and what is on screen.
“Next-Gen” does not mean every platform received identical features. The 2022 update targeted PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. PS4, Xbox One, and Switch received a separate update with a different feature set; do not assume they have the current-generation consoles’ ray tracing or graphics modes.

Lighting, reflections, and environmental detail
On supported PC hardware and current-generation consoles, ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion change how indirect light and contact shadows are represented. On compatible PCs, ray-traced reflections and shadows are additional options. These effects can improve lighting and reflections, but using them is a performance trade-off rather than a free visual upgrade.
Other changes listed by CD PROJEKT RED include updated sky textures and global environmental lighting, a new “Gray Sky” weather type, improved vegetation and water, and refinements to meshes, visual effects, and cutscenes. Selected character textures are upscaled to 4K, and main characters receive higher-resolution self-shadowing. Those selected texture changes should not be read as a claim that every texture in the game is 4K.

Character, crowd, and world detail
The update incorporates community mods and mod-inspired improvements. Its PC ULTRA+ settings raise options including crowd count, shadow quality, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water, and level of detail. Console patch notes also describe improvements to textures, fidelity, shadows, draw distances, and crowd density, without quantifying each change against Classic.
How does performance compare by platform?
For consoles, the clearest official comparison is between mode targets. The December 2022 patch notes describe dynamic resolution scaling for the PS5 and Xbox Series X modes. They do not establish a locked frame rate or a fixed resolution for every scene.

The official notes describe targets and available features, not an apples-to-apples benchmark of Classic versus Next-Gen across all platforms. They do not establish a universal performance uplift or average FPS. When comparing a particular PC test, look for the GPU and CPU, resolution, graphics settings, ray-tracing and upscaling state, and exact game build.
PC settings and hardware trade-offs
ULTRA+ and ray tracing can demand more from a PC than less demanding settings. DLSS 3 is available only on compatible hardware; FSR 2.1 is another supported upscaling option. The best balance depends on your system and preferred output: a higher image-quality setting may reduce frame rate, while upscaling or lowering demanding options may help performance. Feature support alone does not predict a specific FPS.

CD PROJEKT RED’s PC requirements page says expected FPS targets are based on QA testing and may fluctuate with scene, gameplay, system configuration, settings, and output resolution. It also lists an SSD as required for current technical enhancements. The page says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported, although the game may continue to run without a compatibility or performance guarantee. Requirements can change, so consult the current page for the build you intend to play.

The 2022 PS5 and Xbox Series X Performance modes have a 60 FPS target, while their Ray Tracing modes target 30 FPS. Xbox Series S Performance mode also targets 60 FPS, and its Quality mode targets 30 FPS. These are CD PROJEKT RED’s stated targets, not a promise that every scene will hold that frame rate. On PC, performance varies with hardware, resolution, settings, and scene; the update does not imply a universal 60 FPS result.

Is the Witcher 3 next-gen update free?
CD PROJEKT RED said eligible owners of the original PC, PS4, and Xbox One releases could upgrade to the 2022 Next-Gen version for free. The digital Complete Edition launched on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store on December 14, 2022. A boxed Complete Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X was announced in January 2023 for people who need to buy a copy; an eligible existing owner does not need to buy that physical edition just to receive the update. How the 2026 Remastered release changes the comparison
As of October 4, 2026, the 2022 Next-Gen update is no longer the newest release. CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for eligible owners on supported platforms. Its official Remastered overview describes broader visual and gameplay changes, including updated environments, character and monster textures, foliage, lighting and rendering, PC path tracing, PS5 Pro support, and revised combat and animations.
The publisher’s Remastered materials list PS5 Pro support with a 60 FPS ray-tracing mode and a Performance mode of up to 90 FPS with VRR. These are Remastered claims for that platform, not figures for the 2022 Next-Gen version. The release has also received post-launch changes: an October 1 PC hotfix adjusted Velen visuals, reverted a HairWorks change that had caused serious issues for some users, and fixed a failure to launch Classic 1.32. For any comparison, identify whether you mean Classic 1.32, 2022 Next-Gen (4.0 and later builds), or Remastered.
