To get the key in In Wolf’s Clothing, open the rightmost sluice gate nearest Morkvarg’s cave, dive beneath it, and follow the flooded passage into the cave below his lair. Search the bones for the Padlock key, then use it on the locked garden or chapter-house doors.
Find the sluice gate nearest Morkvarg’s cave
- Go to the sluice mechanism in Freya’s Garden. It lets you select among three gates.
- Select and open the rightmost gate nearest Morkvarg’s cave. Walkthroughs also describe this as the northern or right-hand gate; use its position relative to the cave if the compass wording is unclear.
- Dive beneath the open gate and swim through the flooded passage. It leads to a cave beneath Morkvarg’s lair.
The gates lead to different places, so opening another one does not take you to the key cave. You may be able to reach parts of the garden without operating the sluice mechanism, but that shortcut is not the route to the key.
Search the cave for the Padlock key
Look among the bones or skeleton remains in the cave and collect the Padlock key. It is the key associated with Morkvarg’s account, not a generic house key. The Witcher Wiki walkthrough and the Official Witcher Wiki item reference identify the bones in the cave beneath his lair as its location: quest walkthrough and item reference.

Return through the flooded passage and use the Padlock key on the locked doors. The relevant building may be called the garden house, chapter house, or the house near the sacred tree. The key opens garden doors as well as the chapter-house door, so it is useful beyond a single entrance. GameBanshee also describes the northern/rightmost gate as the route to the underwater cave where the chapter-house key is found: In Wolf’s Clothing walkthrough.

Optional quest clue inside
If you are continuing the investigation, search both rooms in the chapter house. A journal in a chest in the left room provides a clue relevant to a later conversation with Einar. The quest objectives include searching the chapter house and reading the journal; finding it is separate from collecting the key. Quest walkthrough and objectives.
