The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition includes the base game and both major story expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. For a first playthrough, play the main campaign, then Hearts of Stone, then Blood and Wine. That sequence is a recommendation, not a requirement: CD PROJEKT RED says either expansion can be started separately from the main menu.

What’s included in The Witcher 3 Complete Edition?

The Complete Edition brings together the base game and its two major story expansions:

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: The base game follows Geralt as he searches the Continent for his adopted daughter, Ciri.
  • Hearts of Stone: A separate adventure built around a contract from the mysterious Man of Glass, taking Geralt to places including No Man’s Land and Oxenfurt.
  • Blood and Wine: A separate story set in Toussaint, a new region in the game.

CD PROJEKT RED’s current game page and FAQ describe the Complete Edition and the expansions. The exact contents of older edition labels or physical packages may differ, so check the specific platform listing rather than assuming every product called a Witcher 3 edition contains the same items.

What order should you play the DLC?

  1. Play the main campaign. It establishes the central search for Ciri and gives a first-time player the story context for Geralt’s world.
  2. Play Hearts of Stone. It was the first of the two major expansions, and its story takes Geralt to No Man’s Land and Oxenfurt.
  3. Play Blood and Wine last. It followed Hearts of Stone, introduces Toussaint, and was framed by the publisher as a concluding journey for Geralt.

This order follows the expansions’ release sequence and their story framing; CD PROJEKT RED does not prescribe it as mandatory. The publisher says players can start either expansion separately from the main menu, so you do not have to finish the main story before accessing them.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition - Xbox Series X
  • Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
  • Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
  • Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.

How do the two expansions differ?

Expansion Setting and premise Publisher’s launch-era playtime estimate
Hearts of Stone Geralt takes a contract from the Man of Glass; locations include No Man’s Land and Oxenfurt. 10-plus hours, estimated by CD PROJEKT RED in its 2015 announcement.
Blood and Wine A separate story introduces Toussaint and was described as a concluding journey for Geralt. 20-plus hours, estimated by CD PROJEKT RED in its 2015 announcement.

These are estimates from the expansions’ 2015 announcement, not guaranteed completion times. Your time will depend on how you play and how much optional content you take on. The publisher’s original expansion announcement describes both releases.

Do you have to buy the expansions separately?

If you own the Complete Edition, both major story expansions are included. If you own only the base game, access depends on your platform, edition, and prior ownership. CD PROJEKT RED’s current FAQ says standalone expansions are delisted in the storefront changes it describes, and that the base game is replaced there by the Complete Edition. It also says previous-generation PS4 and Xbox One owners can download the expansions free, while people who already own an expansion keep it in their library as the content is patched into the base game. Check the current listing and publisher instructions for your platform; availability wording may vary by platform and later release updates.

What changed with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered?

CD PROJEKT RED released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on September 29, 2026. The release notice says the update includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Follow the publisher’s current platform-specific instructions to check eligibility or claim an upgrade; ownership and upgrade steps can depend on where you play.

Does the Complete Edition include every DLC and update?

CD PROJEKT RED’s August 2016 announcement said the Game of the Year Edition included every piece of downloadable content and all updates and improvements released by that time. That is a dated statement about that edition, not a guarantee that every historical or current edition label and physical package has identical contents. For current access, check the listing for your platform and the publisher’s current FAQ. The 2016 GOTY announcement provides the original edition details.
