China is renewing work on molten-salt reactor technology once tested experimentally in the United States. Its reported thorium-to-uranium fuel conversion is a research milestone, not proof that a commercial thorium power plant is operating. The Chinese project and the earlier US experiment are related by their use of liquid-fuel molten-salt technology, but they are not the same reactor or fuel-cycle program.

What nuclear technology is China bringing back?

China’s TMSR-LF1 is a liquid-fueled molten-salt reactor: its fuel is dissolved in salt rather than formed into the solid fuel assemblies used in many reactors. In this design family, salt is part of the fuel system, not simply a coolant. The reactor is part of a thorium-focused research program run by the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

“Thorium reactor” is useful shorthand, but it can mislead. Thorium-232 is fertile: it can be converted through the fuel cycle into uranium-233, which can serve as fissile fuel. Thorium itself is not a fissile fuel in the same way as uranium-235. CAS described its reported result as thorium-to-uranium fuel conversion.

What has China reported achieving?

In March 2026, CAS reported that the experimental reactor had achieved thorium-to-uranium conversion and produced experimental data after thorium loading. The result was attributed to SINAP. It is an institutional report of an experimental fuel-cycle result; the consulted material does not provide independent validation or the full underlying experimental data.

SINAP’s project account gives this sequence of operating milestones:

Milestone Reported date What it establishes
First criticality October 11, 2023 The reactor began a controlled nuclear chain reaction.
Full-power operation June 2024 SINAP reported operation at the reactor’s stated full power.
Thorium-loading experiment October 2024 The project carried out the thorium-loading work preceding the later reported conversion result.

SINAP identifies TMSR-LF1 as a 2-megawatt-thermal (MWt) experimental reactor at its Wuwei campus in Gansu province. MWt measures heat output, not electricity delivered to the grid.

Did the United States have a molten-salt reactor?

Yes. Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) operated from January 1965 through December 1969. ORNL reported that it accumulated more than 13,000 hours at full power. The experiment was designed to test liquid-fuel reactor technology and generate technical evidence; it was not a commercial electricity station.

MSRE first went critical using uranium-235. On October 2, 1968, it became the first reactor to operate using uranium-233, according to ORNL’s historical timeline. That is relevant to thorium research because uranium-233 can be produced from thorium, but it does not make MSRE equivalent to China’s current thorium-loading program.

Why did the US program stop?

The US molten-salt program continued into the early 1970s, after MSRE’s operating period. ORNL’s retrospective describes a shift in attention toward other reactor designs. The available institutional history does not support reducing that change to a single explanation, such as a claim that thorium was abandoned solely because it could not support weapons production.

What’s more, you can adjust the brightness and set up the gradient mode.

MSRE demonstrated sustained operation of a liquid-fuel molten-salt experiment and yielded valuable technical data. That achievement is narrower than proof that later reactor concepts are safe, economical, durable, or ready for commercial use. ORNL notes that modern proposals may operate at higher temperatures and use different salts or structural materials, so the older experiment cannot certify their performance.

Is China’s reactor producing commercial electricity?

The reported project is an experiment, not evidence of a grid-scale commercial power plant. Its 2 MWt rating is thermal output, and the cited project account does not establish commercial electricity generation.

SINAP has stated an objective of a 100-megawatt-class demonstration by 2035. That is a future project target, not an achieved milestone or a guaranteed construction or operating date. The consulted sources do not provide independently verified construction planning for that larger demonstration, a detailed safety case, or lifecycle economics.

What does the comeback actually show?

It shows renewed development of a reactor concept that received substantial experimental attention in the United States decades ago, alongside China’s distinct thorium-focused research program. CAS’s reported fuel conversion is significant as an experimental result. It does not settle whether the technology can be scaled, operated economically, or deployed commercially.

The comparison is most useful when kept to what is established: both programs involve liquid-fuel molten-salt experimentation, while their fuel-cycle work, materials, salt systems, and operating conditions should not be assumed to match. MSRE is a historical precedent, not a certificate for the safety or readiness of contemporary designs. As ORNL researcher David Holcomb put it in the lab’s 2015 anniversary report, “Molten salt technology has experienced a revival in interest both domestically and internationally, and the experiment itself remains unique in reactor development history.”
