A Raspberry Pi 5’s board price is only the starting point. A usable setup may also need power, boot storage, cooling or a case, and—if you want a desktop—display and input accessories. The actual total depends on the Pi’s RAM, your project, what you already own, and local prices; there is no honest one-size-fits-all total.
How much does a Raspberry Pi 5 cost?
The answer depends on the memory configuration, market, reseller, and purchase date. Raspberry Pi’s product page lists 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB Pi 5 models, but directs buyers to regional resellers rather than publishing one global checkout price. Check a local reseller for a dated quote, then account for tax and shipping. Raspberry Pi 5 specifications and reseller links
On 2 February 2026, Raspberry Pi announced increases for Pi 4 and Pi 5 products with at least 2GB of memory: $10 for 2GB, $15 for 4GB, $30 for 8GB, and $60 for 16GB. The company said the 1GB Pi 4 and 1GB Pi 5 were protected at that time. These are announced increases, not the current price of a board or a complete setup. Raspberry Pi attributed the changes to rising LPDDR4 memory costs; CEO Eben Upton wrote, “Price rises have accelerated as we enter 2026, and the cost of some parts has more than doubled over the last quarter.” Raspberry Pi’s 2 February 2026 price notice

What else do you need to set up a Raspberry Pi?
Start with the parts needed to boot and use your particular build. Some items may already be on hand; others depend on whether you want a desktop, headless server, or project-specific device.
| Budget line | When to include it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Power supply | If you do not already have a suitable supply. | Pi 5 uses USB-C. Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply, particularly relevant when attaching power-hungry USB devices. Raspberry Pi’s power guidance |
| Boot storage | For every setup that needs local boot storage. | Pi 5 has a microSD slot. For an M.2 SSD, its PCIe interface needs a separate HAT or adapter. Add SSD capacity and adapter only if the project calls for them. Pi 5 specifications |
| Case or cooling | When protection, the environment, or sustained workload makes it useful. | The Pi 5 case is a new design and does not fit the Pi 4. The official Pi 5 case has an integrated fan. Typical client workloads are designed to run uncased without active cooling; consider cooling for sustained heavy use. Pi 5 product details |
| Display connection and input devices | For a desktop setup, unless you already own compatible equipment. | Pi 5 has dual HDMI output. A headless system may need no monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Pi 5 specifications |
| Project-specific parts | Only when required by your build. | HATs, cameras, sensors, network accessories, mounts, and higher-capacity storage can add substantially to the bill. An M.2 SSD also needs an adapter. Pi 5 specifications |
| Electricity | For a system that runs regularly or continuously. | Estimate using your own average wall power draw, operating hours, attached devices, and local electricity tariff; the total varies by setup. |
Budget by the kind of Raspberry Pi setup
Headless project or server
Budget for the board, power, boot storage, and any project-specific hardware. If you can configure and manage the Pi over your network, you may not need to buy a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or display cable. Add a case or cooling only if your installation and workload warrant it.

Desktop setup
In addition to the board, power, and storage, include a compatible display connection and input devices if you do not already own them. Pi 5 offers dual HDMI output; check the display and cable you plan to use rather than assuming the connection is already covered. A case or cooling is a separate, workload-dependent choice.

SSD-equipped server or storage build
Include the SSD and the separate HAT or adapter needed to connect an M.2 drive through Pi 5’s PCIe interface. Also consider the power needs of attached devices and sustained workload. Do not treat an SSD as part of the bare-board price.

Will a Raspberry Pi 4 power supply work for Raspberry Pi 5?
Do not assume that an older supply is suitable just because it has a USB-C connector. Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C supply for Pi 5. Whether your existing supply is adequate depends on its specifications and the load, especially power-hungry USB devices. Compare its rating with Raspberry Pi’s recommendation before relying on it. Official Pi 5 power-supply recommendation
At Pi 5’s 2023 launch, Raspberry Pi said especially intensive workloads could reach around 12W and described a higher USB current limit available with a suitable 5V/5A supply. That is historical design context—not a universal average draw or a current electricity-cost estimate. Raspberry Pi’s 2023 Pi 5 launch article

Which apparent costs are optional?
A common budgeting mistake is to treat every accessory as mandatory. A headless build may reuse a suitable power supply and storage while avoiding desktop peripherals; a desktop build may already have a display, keyboard, and mouse. Conversely, cameras, sensors, HATs, a large SSD, or mounting hardware can make a project cost far more than a basic setup.

How to calculate a realistic local total
- Choose the board configuration. Decide on the Pi 5 RAM variant that suits the build; memory tier affects the board price.
- Get a dated local board quote. Use a regional reseller and record currency, tax, and shipping rather than relying on an old launch price.
- List only required parts. Add power, boot storage, and any needed adapter, case or cooling, display path, input devices, and project hardware.
- Subtract what you already own. Reuse suitable peripherals and supplies only after checking compatibility and power requirements.
- Compare like with like. When comparing variants, kits, or another small computer, align RAM, storage type and capacity, included power and cooling, peripherals, project add-ons, and local price basis.
- Keep recurring energy separate. Estimate electricity from your own measured or otherwise verified average wall draw, operating schedule, and local tariff rather than applying a universal annual figure.
Current accessory prices, a country-specific all-in total, and a universal annual electricity cost cannot be inferred from the board specifications alone. Price the actual parts and configuration in your market.
