Using Times Higher Education’s 2026 U.S. computer science ranking as a consistent proxy for technology-focused university strength, the top 10 are MIT, Princeton, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Caltech, UC Berkeley, Cornell, UCLA and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The ranking measures universities—not graduate hiring results or individual degree programs—so use it to build a shortlist, then compare the specific program and career evidence that matter to you.
Top 10 U.S. graduate schools for tech talent
The table lists each school’s U.S. position and overall score in Times Higher Education’s 2026 computer science ranking. These are scores from that ranking, not employment rates or salary figures.
| U.S. rank | University | Overall score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) | 96.2 |
| 2 | Princeton University | 96.1 |
| 3 | Stanford University | 95.9 |
| 4 | Carnegie Mellon University | 95.5 |
| 5 | Harvard University | 93.8 |
| 6 | California Institute of Technology (Caltech) | 93.1 |
| 7 | University of California, Berkeley | 92.8 |
| 8 | Cornell University | 90.7 |
| 9 | University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) | 90.6 |
| 10 | University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) | 89.6 |
Times Higher Education’s table includes component scores for teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. Those dimensions help show that schools have different strengths; they do not, by themselves, establish graduate placement outcomes. For example, UIUC’s industry score is 96.5, while its international outlook score is 65.6. Harvard’s international outlook score is 80.7. This list uses a university-level computer science ranking as a practical proxy for “tech talent.” Times Higher Education says its U.S. table can inform undergraduate or postgraduate choices, but it ranks institutions rather than particular master’s or doctoral degrees. Its global computer science ranking uses 18 performance indicators and covers 1,165 universities across 84 countries and territories; that wider methodology provides context, but does not turn this U.S. list into a graduate employment ranking. Read about Times Higher Education’s 2026 global computer science methodology.
#1 Best Overall
No comparable cross-school statistic on technology graduate employment or salary is established by these rankings. A high position should not be read as proof that graduates are hired more often or earn more. If career outcomes are central to your decision, check each program’s own data and ask which graduates it covers, what degrees and specialties are included, and the period measured.
Why other graduate computer science rankings have a different order
Rankings can disagree because they define and weigh institutional strength differently. Grad School Navigator’s 2026 graduate-specific computer science ranking places Stanford first, MIT second, UC Berkeley third, Carnegie Mellon fourth and Harvard fifth. It ranks universities, not individual programs, and considers research strength, career outcomes, global engagement, learning experience and applicant demand, with expert judgment used to calibrate the components. View Grad School Navigator’s 2026 graduate computer science ranking and guidance.
Institutional announcements of U.S. News results provide another point of comparison, but they are not directly interchangeable with either ranking above. Carnegie Mellon reports tying MIT and Stanford for first in the 2026 graduate computer science ranking; UT Austin reports tenth nationally in the 2026–2027 edition; and Georgia Tech reports seventh in 2026. Each institution describes its own placement, so consult the relevant ranking methodology before comparing those results with another list.

Use a university ranking to identify possibilities, then compare the particular degree and specialty you intend to pursue. A strong institutional position cannot answer whether the program fits your goals or whether it offers the degree you need.
- Research and faculty fit: Look for faculty and active work in your intended area, such as artificial intelligence, systems, theory, programming languages or cybersecurity.
- Program availability: Confirm that the school offers the master’s or doctoral degree you want in your chosen specialty. Rankings do not establish that every institution has the same program options.
- Career evidence: Ask for outcomes specific to the degree level and field you are considering. Check the population, reporting period and definition of employment, and distinguish employer access or industry connections from verified placement results.
- Learning environment: Consider teaching and the structure of the program alongside its research reputation, especially if your goals are primarily professional rather than academic.
- Location and industry connections: Assess whether the school’s connections and location align with the market where you want to work; their value depends on your career plans.
- Admissions and practical constraints: Compare requirements, deadlines and total costs for each linked program. Admissions standards can vary by degree and specialization.
- International outlook: Treat this as one institutional dimension, not a proxy for your individual experience or hiring prospects.
Grad School Navigator advises applicants that “A higher position should inform your shortlist, not decide it for you.” Its guidance is to compare linked programs for academic fit, admissions requirements, deadlines and costs. Review its applicant guidance.
