If a command works in Terminal but an app cannot launch it, the app may not have the same environment. Check the PATH and host of the process that failed—not just the terminal where the tool works. Then verify the app’s shell, working directory, environment overrides, and command lookup rules.
First, identify exactly what failed
Write down the command name, the complete error message, the application, the operating system, and where the failing process runs: your local machine, a remote host, a container, or WSL. A message that says an executable cannot be found points to a different problem than a tool that starts and then exits. An exit code by itself does not tell you which occurred; Visual Studio Code’s troubleshooting guide notes, “An exit code alone is not a diagnosis.” Microsoft’s VS Code terminal troubleshooting guide recommends considering the full message, shell, and operating system.
Also identify which part of the application tried to run the command. An integrated terminal, task, debugger, extension, and automation job may each use different settings. Diagnose the component that produced the error rather than assuming its environment matches the app’s terminal.

Compare PATH in the failing process and the working one
PATH is a list of directories a process can search when asked to run a command by name. A tool can be installed, and its directory can appear in one terminal’s PATH, while the process launched by an app receives a different PATH. A terminal may build its environment by running shell startup files; a GUI app, task, debugger, remote process, or container may be launched differently. Visual Studio Code’s CLI documentation describes the underlying issue this way: “Your OS cannot find the VS Code binary code on its path.” VS Code CLI FAQ

Compare the environment where the command succeeds with the environment where it fails. Check whether the executable’s directory is present in the failing process’s PATH, and confirm that both processes are running on the same host. If the app or task has an environment override, inspect it: an override can replace PATH or omit directories that the parent process would otherwise supply. VS Code’s troubleshooting guidance covers shell profiles, environment inheritance and overrides, working directories, and automation profiles.
Follow the branch that matches where the error occurs
VS Code command-line launcher
If the command that fails is code, the setup depends on the operating system. VS Code says Windows and Linux installations should put the command on PATH. On macOS, use the Command Palette action Shell Command: Install ‘code’ command in PATH if needed. VS Code may launch an interactive login shell to retrieve a shell environment and align its PATH with a user-created terminal. See the VS Code CLI FAQ.
VS Code terminal, task, or debugger
If an integrated terminal works but a task fails, check the task’s own settings as well as VS Code’s general terminal configuration. In particular, inspect the task’s working directory (options.cwd), shell and shell arguments (options.shell), and environment (options.env). For a debugger or automation action, check the corresponding launch configuration or profile. Also verify the selected shell executable and arguments, whether the process inherits the expected environment, and whether startup customization runs successfully. For a remote window, investigate the host where the failing command actually runs. See VS Code terminal troubleshooting.

macOS app launched from Finder
A Finder-launched macOS app bundle may receive a reduced environment compared with a terminal session. PyInstaller documents that, in this context, PATH may be /usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; common terminal locations such as /usr/local/bin and /opt/homebrew/bin may therefore be absent. If the failure occurs only in a Finder-launched app, check the environment available to that app or whether it can be configured to use the executable’s full path. Windows app launch versus shell command lookup
Windows App Paths is a registry mechanism for registering an executable name and fully qualified path for processes launched with ShellExecuteEx. Microsoft presents it as an application-specific alternative to adding a location to the global system PATH. It does not mean every shell or process will resolve a bare command name the same way. If the command fails in a shell, check that shell’s PATH and lookup behavior; if an application launch fails, determine whether the application uses the registered launch mechanism. Windows executable launched from WSL
When a Linux process in WSL needs to launch a Windows executable by name, Windows locations must be available in the WSL environment. Check Linux PATH with echo $PATH. If Windows directories are missing, look for shell setup that replaced PATH rather than preserving its existing value. The command fails in the shell itself
If a command stopped working in bash or zsh after installation or an environment change, the shell may have cached an older command location. In bash or zsh, run type command_name (substitute the actual command) to see what the shell resolves. Conda documents clearing the cache with hash -r in bash or rehash in zsh; reactivating the relevant environment may also refresh it. This is most relevant when the shell itself fails, not just a GUI app. Conda’s command-not-found troubleshooting
Check the shell and its startup files
The application may be using a different shell from the one you tested, or it may pass different arguments. Confirm the configured shell executable and arguments, then test that shell directly with the same startup behavior. If it works without startup customization, inspect the relevant profile files for a command that fails, exits early, or overwrites PATH.
For VS Code, Microsoft suggests testing without shell profiles using examples such as bash --noprofile --norc, zsh -f, pwsh -NoProfile, or cmd.exe /d, as appropriate for the shell. These are diagnostic examples, not universal replacements for your normal shell configuration. See the VS Code troubleshooting guide.

Apply the narrowest supported fix, then refresh the right process
Choose a fix based on where lookup fails: add or correct the missing directory in the failing process’s environment; correct that task’s or debugger’s shell, arguments, or working directory; fix a startup file that replaces PATH; use an appropriate application-specific launch configuration; or clear a stale shell cache. Avoid changing global PATH when the evidence points to one task or app, and avoid assuming that registering a Windows App Path changes shell lookup.
After changing an environment setting or profile, relaunch the affected app or use its documented environment-refresh behavior, then check PATH in the failing context again. A running app receives an environment when it starts; changing a shell profile or system setting alone does not establish that an already-running process has received the update. VS Code’s shell-environment resolution behavior and the documented differences between launch contexts make relaunching a practical check, not a universal guarantee.
