What is the ToneLadder?
The ToneLadder is a sensor-equipped ladder designed to make physical movement part of playing music. Its rungs act as the instrument’s interactive surface, so a player can move up and down the ladder or touch a rung by hand to produce sound. The project descriptions say the sound varies from rung to rung, but do not specify the sounds or explain how they are composed. Lars Loehn’s project page and WHITEvoid’s project video description both describe the ladder-based interaction.
How does playing it work?
The documented idea is straightforward: interact with a rung and it triggers a sound, tone, or musical loop. Moving between rungs lets a player change what is heard; WHITEvoid also describes playing along the ladder and performing a duet with another person. The sources do not provide a demonstration-level account of timing, sensor response, or how simultaneous touches behave.
Who developed the project?
Lars Loehn’s project page says he and Christopher Bauder jointly developed the ToneLadder at the request of White Void and Innovation Lab A/S Denmark. Loehn’s page also reports that the work appeared in numerous exhibitions and won first prize at the Learntech Multimedia Competition; it gives neither the competition year nor an exhibition list or count.

Bauder later placed the ToneLadder among his earlier projects combining interactive installations, interfaces, visuals, and musical elements. In an October 2007 Digimag interview, he said: “I created some earlier projects in this manner like the ToneLadder, the midiGun or the 3D VJ software 3DJ.”
What versions are described?
WHITEvoid names three variants, but does not explain how they differ. The labels should not be treated as verified technical specifications.

Can you buy a ToneLadder or build one?
The reviewed project pages do not establish that the ToneLadder is currently sold as a consumer instrument, or identify a retail kit or compatible commercial model. They also do not document the ladder make, sensor technology, controller, wiring, sound-generation method, software, MIDI support, power requirements, safety provisions, assembly process, or parts list. That is not enough information to recommend components or provide a responsible build guide.
Accordingly, a household ladder, generic sensors, or MIDI equipment should not be assumed to be a ToneLadder or compatible with the original project. The available descriptions establish the concept and interaction, not a reproducible design.
