The Steam Deck’s most consequential limitation for some players isn’t its hardware: it’s whether a game’s software, especially its anti-cheat system, supports SteamOS. A title can be within the handheld’s technical reach and still be unavailable because its publisher or middleware does not permit it to run on Linux.
Why won’t this game run on my Steam Deck?
The Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer lets many Windows games run on SteamOS without a native Linux version. That approach gives the Deck broad access to the Steam library, but it cannot guarantee that every game, launcher, or background component will work.
Valve says its SteamOS library includes “over 18,000 titles last we checked,” but does not date that check. Treat the figure as Valve’s undated estimate, not a verified current count or a promise that any particular game works. Valve’s SteamOS page describes Proton and the library’s broad compatibility. Valve’s 2022 Steam Deck booklet explains that Proton is designed to run most Windows games on SteamOS without requiring developers to do extensive porting work.
How anti-cheat and other software can block a capable handheld
Compatibility depends on more than the Deck’s processor and graphics hardware. A game may rely on anti-cheat software, a launcher, or other middleware that does not support SteamOS. Valve’s Deck Verified review considers game functionality, launchers, and anti-cheat support, so a game’s rating can reflect problems beyond basic performance. Apex Legends illustrates the publisher-policy issue
On October 31, 2024, EA’s Apex Legends team announced that Linux users would be blocked from playing. EA said, “There is currently no reliable way for us to differentiate a legitimate Steam Deck from a malicious cheat claiming to be a Steam Deck (via Linux).” That was EA’s explanation for Apex Legends, not a general statement about all anti-cheat systems or Valve’s position. EA said players could still use handhelds if they installed Windows. Read EA’s announcement on Steam.
The example shows why hardware upgrades are not a universal answer: if a publisher blocks Linux access or its middleware will not run on SteamOS, more capable hardware does not remove that software restriction. Windows is a publisher-supported option in EA’s cited announcement, but it changes the Deck’s software setup rather than solving the SteamOS compatibility issue.

How to check whether a Steam game is Steam Deck Verified
- Look up the game in Steam and check its current Steam Deck compatibility rating. Valve’s Verified information explains the review categories and what they assess.
- Read the rating details for issues involving functionality, launchers, or anti-cheat. A rating is more useful when you check the specific limitation than when you rely on the label alone.
- For online games, check the publisher’s current support information as well. A rating or compatibility report can become stale when a game or its software changes; Valve says reviews are ongoing and new games and updates arrive every day.
Compatibility is therefore a per-game, changing condition—not a single answer about whether the Steam Deck “supports” a whole genre or the Steam library in general.

Yes, installed games can be played offline unless the individual game requires an internet connection. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ describes offline play. It does not remove a game’s online requirement, make online anti-cheat work offline, or override a publisher’s decision to block SteamOS.

Can changing the compatibility tool fix a game?
It can be a troubleshooting step for some compatibility problems, but it is not a universal workaround for anti-cheat restrictions or publisher-side blocks. Valve documents per-game selection of a compatibility tool in Steam’s Properties menu:
- Open your Steam Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Choose Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select an available tool.
- Launch the game and check whether the problem is resolved.

What this means when choosing a Steam Deck
Before buying or relying on a Deck for a particular game, check that title’s current SteamOS compatibility, anti-cheat and launcher status, and whether it requires a persistent internet connection. If a game is blocked on SteamOS, look for a publisher-supported alternative rather than assuming a hardware upgrade or compatibility setting will help. The Deck can be an excellent fit for a library that works on SteamOS; it is a less reliable choice if access to a specific unsupported online game is essential.
