Buy a water leak sensor first, and place it where water is most likely to escape: under a sink, beside a washing machine, near a water heater, or by a sump pump. It is the most useful starter sensor for most beginners because it has a protective job that has nothing to do with lighting or entertainment. It tells you when moisture appears where you asked it to watch.
That is a sensible default, not a universal ranking. If your main goal is automatic lighting, a motion or presence sensor may fit better. If you want to know whether a door or window has been opened, a contact sensor is the right choice. The rest of this guide explains how to decide, where to put a leak sensor, and what to check before you buy.
Why a leak sensor makes a better first purchase
A smart bulb, plug, or speaker mostly adds convenience. A sensor becomes useful only when its signal triggers something you care about, such as a phone alert or an automation. A leak sensor fits that test well: a small puddle under a dishwasher or behind a toilet is easy to miss until the damage is done, and a sensor on the floor can notice it before you do.

Where to place a leak sensor
The best spot is wherever a leak would be expensive or hard to notice. Moen’s placement guidance lists these locations for its detector:
- Under bath and kitchen sinks
- Under toilets
- Around water appliances, washing machines, and water heaters
- Near boilers, filtration tanks, and water softeners
- In basements, beside floor drains, and by sump pumps
Standalone placement on the floor
Used by itself, the Moen Flo Detector has its leak sensors on the back, so it is placed flat on the floor. Moen recommends that the LED face upward. Keep it where water would run to it, such as the lowest point beneath a sink or the floor in front of a washing machine.

Placement with the mounting base
When the detector is attached to its mounting base, the back sensors are inactive. Leak detection then depends on a remote sensing disc or a separate leak-sensing cable, which lets you monitor a spot the main unit cannot cover conveniently. If you plan to mount it, buy the accessory your location needs before you install the unit.

Alexa’s Matter documentation describes three common sensor behaviours: a contact sensor detects contact, a motion detector reports motion, and a leak detector reports water leaks. Those categories map to different questions, so match the sensor to the question you want answered.

| Sensor type | What it reports | Choose it when | Example named in this guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water leak detector | Water or moisture near the sensor | You want an alert about a leak near a sink, appliance, water heater, or sump pump | Moen Flo Detector |
| Contact sensor | Whether a door or window is open or closed | You want to know whether an entry point has been opened | Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 |
| Motion or human-presence sensor | Motion, or presence in a room | Your goal is automatic lighting or a presence-based routine | TP-Link Tapo T100 (motion) and T150 (human presence) |
Check compatibility before you buy
A sensor is only as useful as the system that receives its signal. Before you buy, confirm the following:
- Ecosystem and controller. Confirm which app or hub the sensor works with. Aqara warns that automation functionality can vary by ecosystem, so an alert or routine that works in one app may not work in another.
- Matter is not the whole answer. Aqara says the Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 is Matter-over-Thread and requires a Matter-compatible Thread Border Router. Aqara names Apple TV and HomePod devices, Echo (4th generation), certain Nest devices, SmartThings or Aeotec hubs, and Home Assistant Yellow as examples. A Matter controller alone is not enough for that sensor.
- Exact model and region. TP-Link’s Matter-certified device list includes the Tapo T110 contact sensor, T100 motion sensor, T150 human-presence sensor, and T310 and T315 temperature and humidity products. TP-Link says the list changes, so check the exact model version and your regional listing before you choose.
- Power. Confirm the battery type and replacement method for the exact model. The standalone Moen Flo Detector uses a CR123A battery.
- Accessories. Confirm whether the remote sensing disc or cable, and any local audible alarm, is included. The sources reviewed here do not settle whether every bundle includes them.

Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2
The Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2 is a reasonable example if you want a contact sensor. It is Matter-over-Thread, and it depends on a Matter-compatible Thread Border Router, as described in the compatibility section. If you do not already have one of the controllers Aqara lists, factor that hardware into the cost and setup before you commit.

Quick Recap
What the evidence does and does not show
- No reliable independent figure establishes how much damage a smart leak sensor prevents, or how often one is needed. Do not rely on any savings estimate you see without a named, original source.
- The placement claims and battery details come from manufacturer documentation. No independent performance test was reviewed, so detection speed and accuracy in your home are not established here.
- A leak sensor cannot detect every leak. Notifications also depend on your network, your app, and power conditions. Keep a regular habit of checking under sinks and behind appliances.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are life-safety devices and are a separate category. A leak sensor or a convenience sensor does not replace them, and this guide does not compare them.
Setup checklist for a first leak sensor
- Identify the most likely leak point, such as the sink base, washing machine outlet, water heater, or sump pump.
- Confirm the exact model, region, and battery type, along with the controller or hub it needs.
- Check whether the mounting base is in use. If it is, confirm you have the remote sensing disc or cable that the location requires.
- Place the detector on the floor at the lowest point where water would collect. For a standalone Moen Flo Detector, keep the LED facing upward.
- Confirm that the alert reaches your phone. Use the app’s test or notification option if it offers one, and record the setup so you know which app receives the alert.
