The Sinking City 2 is a survival-horror game first and a detective game second. Its flooded 1920s Arkham is explored through tighter, carefully built locations, resource pressure and combat; optional investigations add useful rewards without blocking the main story. That shift makes it a clearer horror sequel, though PC Gamer’s review points to friction in inventory management and a rushed-feeling ending.

What kind of game is The Sinking City 2?

Frogwares describes The Sinking City 2 as a third-person, single-player survival-horror game set in a supernatural version of 1920s Arkham. After a ritual goes wrong, Calvin tries to rescue Faye while the city is flooded, evacuated and overrun by eldritch creatures. The story is designed to stand on its own; familiarity with the original is not required. Steam’s official listing and Frogwares’ Xbox Wire overview describe the premise and genre.

The sequel’s main change is structural. Rather than the first game’s open-world detective-adventure approach, it uses more focused locations designed around exploration, pacing and survival. You search for routes, solve puzzles, manage limited supplies, find safe refuges and fight enemies. Streets and locations such as Akeley Memorial Hospital, the Fish Market and Redemption Church give Arkham a mix of exposed and confined spaces. The official descriptions name enemies including Slither Worms, Abominations, the Stygian Harvester and the Acheronian Juggernaut. Frogwares’ game director explains the shift toward layered locations and survival-focused play.

How combat and survival work

Combat is a more prominent part of the experience than in the original. Frogwares highlights firearms alongside dodging and close-range actions such as punching and stomping. Weapon upgrades and talents can complement each other, giving progression a practical role in handling threats. Scarce resources and inventory management put limits on how freely you can approach encounters; this is not simply an action game with horror scenery.

That emphasis appears to pay off in the combat feel, at least in PC Gamer’s assessment. Reviewer Jody Macgregor praised the dodge-and-melee rhythm and called the sequel improved but incremental. The same review criticized inventory friction and crafting that felt like filler, so the added combat focus does not mean every survival system is equally successful. PC Gamer’s review scored the game 70/100.

Is it still a detective game?

Investigation remains, but it is optional rather than a gate on story progress. Frogwares says solving side cases can reveal useful information and award resources, shortcuts, weapons or upgrades, and talents. In other words, detective work is a way to dig deeper into Arkham and strengthen Calvin, not the central loop that determines whether you can continue. PlayStation Blog’s launch article describes investigation as an optional layer, while Xbox Wire outlines its rewards.

This distinction matters if you liked the first game chiefly for its cases: there are still mysteries to investigate, but the sequel prioritizes horror exploration and combat. If you found the original’s detective-led structure less appealing, the more focused design may be a better fit.

What does the review evidence say about its strengths and weaknesses?

PC Gamer’s August 17, 2026 review gave the game 70/100. It praised the tighter survival-horror spaces and snappier combat, but faulted inventory management, filler-like crafting, the inability to return to earlier flooded streets or skipped side content, and an ending that felt rushed. Those are one reviewer’s findings, not a universal consensus. The review estimated a completion in under 15 hours; that is the reviewer’s experience, not a guaranteed playtime for every player or approach. Should you play the first game first?

No. Frogwares says the sequel tells a standalone story, so newcomers can start here without having played The Sinking City. Returning players may recognize the setting and appreciate how investigation has been repositioned, but prior knowledge is not needed to follow Calvin’s attempt to rescue Faye.

Verdict

The Sinking City 2 is best suited to players who want survival horror with a Lovecraftian setting and optional detective work, rather than an open-world case-solving adventure. Its focused spaces and more engaging combat are the clearest improvements reported by PC Gamer; inventory friction, crafting and the reported rushed ending are meaningful caveats. If the original’s investigation-first format was the main attraction, expect a different balance here.
