The TCL QM8L’s reported 6,567-nit peak is a striking HDR-brightness result, but it describes a small test window—not how brightly the entire screen stays lit. A separate review measured different results at different window sizes and in a named picture mode. Those figures answer different questions, so neither alone establishes the TV’s overall picture quality.

What the 6,567-nit award claim says—and what it does not

A Yahoo Tech search-result excerpt for a 2026 story titled “The Science Behind the TCL QM8L’s Lab Award-Winning Luminance” reports that the TV reached 6,567 nits of peak HDR brightness on a 5% test window and was the brightest TV tested for that year’s Labs Award. The story page was inaccessible, so the award organization, test mode, HDR signal, measurement protocol, sample size, and comparison set could not be confirmed. Treat 6,567 nits as a result attributed to that story, not as a fully documented or independently verified award record. Yahoo Tech’s story listing

Nits measure luminance: the amount of light emitted from a display area. A 5% window means the bright test pattern occupies 5% of the screen while the rest shows a darker image. It tests how bright a limited highlight can become under that particular test setup. It does not mean the whole screen produces 6,567 nits, nor does it describe brightness sustained across an entire scene.

Why window size changes the brightness result

TVs can produce a very bright small highlight while emitting substantially less light across a larger area. As the illuminated portion of the screen grows, power, thermal limits, and the TV’s brightness-control behavior can affect the result. That is why peak-window and full-screen measurements should be read as separate measurements rather than interchangeable ratings.

What an independent review measured

In James Holland’s 2026 TechRadar review, Future Publishing’s TV testing lab tested a 75-inch QM8L. It measured 3,719 nits on a 10% HDR window in Filmmaker Mode and 760 nits on a 100% HDR window in Filmmaker Mode. The lab reports using a Klein K-10A colorimeter, Jeti 15VA spectroradiometer, Murideo Six G 8K Metal test pattern generator, and Portrait Displays Calman software. These are review-specific measurements, not a reproduction of the award test: the window sizes differ, and the award result’s mode and protocol are not established. TechRadar’s TCL QM8L review

Reported result Window and mode Source and sample
6,567 nits 5% test window; mode and detailed protocol not confirmed Yahoo Tech award-story search-result excerpt; sample details not confirmed
3,719 nits 10% HDR window, Filmmaker Mode Future Publishing TV testing lab, 75-inch review sample, 2026
760 nits 100% HDR window, Filmmaker Mode Future Publishing TV testing lab, 75-inch review sample, 2026

Because the award test’s mode and full procedure are unknown, the 6,567-nit figure cannot be compared directly with the TechRadar results or treated as contradicted by them. Window size, picture mode, HDR signal, screen size, sample, and measurement setup all matter when comparing luminance figures.

How TCL’s specifications fit the measurements

TCL identifies the QM8L as an SQD-Mini LED TV with full-array local dimming. Its product sheet lists 65-, 75-, 85-, and 98-inch models, 4K resolution, QLED Super Quantum Dots, and a native 144Hz refresh rate. It advertises up to 4,000+ discrete dimming zones and up to 6,000 peak HDR nits. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results; “up to” maximums should not be assumed for every size, sample, mode, or viewing condition. TCL QM8L Series specifications sheet

TCL also describes the series as reaching 100% BT.2020 color. The product-sheet note qualifies that claim: it is based on typical achievement of a color ratio, actual results can vary, and test environment, standards, equipment, and production variation matter. A separate review reported 98% DCI-P3 color coverage for its 75-inch sample and said that result fell short of TCL’s claimed 100% BT.2020 coverage. These are distinct color-gamut standards and should not be treated as directly equivalent figures. Color coverage describes the range of colors a display can reproduce; it is not another way of measuring luminance.

TCL’s September 1, 2026 press release describes SQD-Mini LED as a combination intended to deliver contrast, brightness, shadow detail, and color. Those are the manufacturer’s claims about the technology, not independent proof of the award measurement or a universal picture-quality ranking. TCL’s September 1, 2026 press release

What peak brightness can—and cannot—tell you about picture quality

High peak luminance can make small HDR highlights, such as reflections or bright lights, appear intense. Local dimming can help a Mini LED TV control different screen regions independently, which is relevant to contrast and dark-scene presentation. But a peak-nit figure alone does not establish how well the TV handles black levels, blooming, screen uniformity, reflections, color accuracy, motion, or sustained brightness.

Review evidence should also stay tied to the tested size. TechRadar’s color-coverage and brightness measurements apply to its 75-inch sample. RTINGS says it bought and tested the 65-inch QM8L and describes the set as a 2026 high-end Mini LED TV with local dimming and Super Quantum Dot technology. Its findings are separate review context, not validation of the inaccessible award protocol or a substitute for the 75-inch lab results. RTINGS’ TCL QM8L review

How to use the figures when comparing TVs

For a meaningful comparison, match the conditions as closely as possible and keep unlike measures separate. Before treating one TV’s number as better than another’s, check:

  • Window size: Was brightness measured on a small highlight, a 10% area, or a full-screen pattern?
  • Picture mode and signal: Which mode and HDR format or signal were used?
  • Tested set: What screen size and sample were measured?
  • Measurement method: Are the instruments and test setup documented?
  • Type of claim: Is the number a manufacturer maximum, a named lab measurement, or a review result?
  • Other picture traits: Look separately at sustained brightness, local-dimming behavior and black level, color accuracy and coverage, and reflection handling.

For the QM8L, the available numbers show why context matters: the award story’s reported 5% window result, TechRadar’s 10% and full-screen Filmmaker Mode measurements, and TCL’s advertised maximums each describe a different source or condition. The evidence supports calling the 6,567-nit result a reported peak-brightness claim; it does not establish that the QM8L is categorically the best TV or the brightest in ordinary viewing.
