The S2 impactor struck Earth about 3.26 billion years ago. A 2024 study estimates it was 37–58 km across and had 50–200 times the mass of the asteroid linked to the dinosaur extinction. The distinction matters: the comparison is about mass, not diameter. The impact likely devastated some shallow-water microbes, but the evidence points to temporary disruption and rapid recovery—not a permanent reset of early life.
What was the S2 impact?
S2 is the name given to an ancient impact event recorded in rocks of South Africa’s Fig Tree Group. The rocks studied by Nadja Drabon and colleagues date the event to about 3.26 billion years ago, when life on Earth consisted of microbes. Their peer-reviewed study, published in PNAS on 29 October 2024, examines sedimentary layers across the impact in two sections known informally as Umbaumba and Bruce’s Hill.
The authors analyzed the rocks’ sedimentary structures, mineral composition, trace elements, organic carbon, and carbon-isotope signatures. Those measurements are physical evidence preserved in rock. The effects on microbes are interpretations drawn from that evidence; the researchers did not directly observe Archean life.

How big was the impactor—and how does it compare with the dinosaur-killing asteroid?
Drabon and colleagues estimate that the S2 impactor was a carbonaceous chondrite about 37–58 km in diameter. They estimate its mass at 50–200 times that of the impactor associated with the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) extinction, which killed the non-avian dinosaurs about 66 million years ago.

“50–200 times” refers to mass, not diameter. It does not mean S2 was 50–200 times wider. The study also notes that at least 16 major Archean impacts involved bolides larger than 10 km; S2 belongs to a period when very large impacts were part of Earth’s early history.
What did the impact do to the early ocean and land?
The rock record led the authors to infer several environmental effects, with consequences that varied over time and between habitats.
A tsunami mixed ocean layers and moved debris
The impact likely generated a giant tsunami. It may have stirred iron-rich deep water into shallower waters and carried debris into coastal areas, abruptly changing conditions for organisms living near the surface and shore.
Heat, darkness, and erosion added short-term stress
Impact-related heating likely partially evaporated surface ocean water. Dust and debris would also have blocked sunlight. The authors suggest that heating and the event’s aftermath may have increased short-term weathering and erosion on land, sending more material into the ocean.

The impact supplied phosphorus and iron
Vaporized material from the impactor likely delivered phosphorus, while the mixing of deep water may have increased iron availability in shallower marine environments. These inputs could have acted as nutrients after the immediate environmental shock.
Did S2 wipe out early microbes?
The study does not support a permanent wipeout or a lasting reset of life. The authors infer substantial mortality among shallow-water phototrophs—microbes that use sunlight for energy—because tsunami disturbance, heating, and darkness would have made their habitat hostile. Microbes in deeper water that relied on chemical energy, along with heat-loving organisms, may have been less exposed to those stresses.
In the layers just above the impact horizon, the researchers found abundant siderites associated with organic matter and light, variable carbonate carbon-isotope values. They interpret these features as consistent with microbial iron cycling after the impact. In their account, added phosphorus and iron may have helped support a temporary bloom of iron-cycling microbes even as some shallow-water communities suffered.
That biological picture is an inference, not a direct census. The geological evidence supports disruption and later changes consistent with microbial activity; it cannot establish precisely how many organisms died or how every community responded.

How long did the disruption last?
Drabon and colleagues characterize S2’s environmental effects as mixed, temporary, and potentially regional or global. They suggest the most harmful effects may have lasted years to decades, followed by rapid biosphere recovery. The proposed sequence is immediate ecological stress, followed by a period in which nutrient and iron inputs may have benefited some microbial processes.
The authors summarize their interpretation this way: “The environmental effects of the S2 meteorite impact, and probably other large early Archean impacts, appear to have had mixed effects on early marine life.”
What the headline gets right—and what it overstates
S2 was extraordinarily large: its estimated mass was 50–200 times that of the K–Pg impactor, and it struck Earth billions of years before the dinosaur extinction. But saying it “reset early life” suggests a sweeping or lasting biological replacement that the study does not conclude. A more accurate description is that S2 caused severe but temporary disruption for some early marine microbes, while its aftermath may also have fueled a transient increase in iron-cycling activity.
