Amazon’s Vulcan is a tactile robot designed to pick items from and stow items in fulfillment-center inventory pods, especially at high and low shelf levels. It combines cameras and machine learning with force-and-torque sensing, so it can make controlled contact with items and bin walls instead of relying on vision alone. Amazon describes Vulcan as a way to reduce physically demanding reaches and improve order handling—not as a system that performs every warehouse task without people.

What is Amazon’s Vulcan robot?

Vulcan is an Amazon Robotics system for two related fulfillment-center tasks: stowing items in storage bins and picking items from them to fulfill orders. The bins are held in inventory pods, which present items at different heights and can contain crowded or irregularly arranged objects.

Vulcan’s distinguishing feature is contact-aware manipulation. Amazon Science describes it as combining computer vision with force and torque sensing, allowing the robot to feel how its tools are interacting with items and pod surfaces. Amazon’s announcement called the system a major advance in robotics; that is Amazon’s characterization, not an independent performance assessment.

How does Vulcan use touch and force sensing?

Amazon Science says Vulcan’s end-of-arm tools measure force and torque along all six axes. That feedback lets the system detect resistance and back off before applying excessive force. Vision helps it understand the scene; tactile feedback helps it respond when the tool actually meets an object or a bin surface.

Stowing items

Vulcan Stow uses a gripper with conveyor belts and an extensible blade. The system can move items aside to create space and guide another item into a bin. Stereo cameras build a three-dimensional model of the pod contents, while machine-learning models identify bins, objects, elastic bands, and available space.

Picking items

Vulcan Pick uses a suction device and a depth camera to locate and remove an item. As with stowing, sensing is important because a bin may be crowded or an item may not be positioned as expected. Amazon says Vulcan can recognize when it cannot move an item and ask a human partner to take over.

How that differs from contact-avoiding automation

Amazon Science contrasts Vulcan’s contact sensing with the approach of conventional industrial robots, which are often designed to avoid contact. The distinction is not that every other warehouse robot is vision-only: it is that Vulcan’s manipulation system uses measured force and torque as part of handling items in a confined, changing bin.

Work situation Vulcan’s approach Why it matters
Locating items and empty space Stereo cameras create a 3-D view; machine-learning models identify objects and bin features, according to Amazon Science. The robot uses visual information to plan a pick or stow action.
Making contact with objects or pod walls End-of-arm tools measure force and torque across six axes, according to Amazon Science. Contact feedback can help the robot adjust or back off when it meets resistance.
Item cannot be moved reliably Amazon says Vulcan can hand the task to a human partner. Automation has an exception path rather than a promise to handle every item.

What work does Vulcan do alongside employees?

Vulcan is intended to work on tasks at the highest and lowest levels of inventory pods. Amazon says this can let employees concentrate on a more ergonomic “power zone,” avoiding some ladder climbing and crouching. Amazon Science describes people continuing to work on middle shelves and on difficult cases, including densely packed bins and items such as fluid containers.

This division of work is central to Vulcan’s role: the robot takes on selected reaches and manipulations, while employees handle work that is difficult for the system or requires intervention. Amazon also says the robot can request help when it cannot move an item. The available descriptions do not establish how often such handoffs occur or how much time or injury risk Vulcan reduces.

Is Vulcan replacing warehouse workers?

The information Amazon has published describes Vulcan as a tool for specific pick-and-stow tasks and says employees remain involved in middle-shelf work, challenging items, and exceptions. It does not establish that Vulcan replaces warehouse employees overall, nor does it quantify any job losses or changes in staffing at the named facilities.

Where is Amazon using Vulcan?

In its 2025 reporting, Amazon said Vulcan was operating at fulfillment centers in Spokane, Washington, and Hamburg, Germany. A technical report described a Spokane pilot with six Vulcan Stow robots and a planned 30-robot beta at that facility. It also described a larger German deployment involving both Vulcan Stow and Vulcan Pick; the report did not state a robot count for that deployment.

Amazon said it planned to extend deployment across Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States over the following years. That is a rollout plan reported by Amazon, not confirmation that Vulcan is now installed at every site in those regions.

What jobs could warehouse robots create?

Amazon says robotics has created hundreds of job categories, naming robotic floor monitor and onsite reliability maintenance engineer as examples. These illustrate the kinds of work that can accompany automated operations: monitoring robotic systems and maintaining equipment so it can continue operating. The company’s statement does not specify how many positions belong to each category or how many are attributable to Vulcan specifically.

Vulcan’s use of cameras, machine learning, and force-sensing tools makes equipment monitoring and technical maintenance relevant to its operation. That does not mean every employee needs robotics expertise: the published material identifies technical job categories but does not describe a universal training requirement or a specific qualification for working alongside Vulcan.

How large is Amazon’s robotics operation?

Amazon reported in 2025 that it had deployed more than 750,000 robots over the previous dozen years and that robots played a role in completing 75% of customer orders. These are company-wide figures reported by Amazon; they are not Vulcan-specific counts, and “played a role” does not mean robots completed those orders on their own.
