The “trillion sensors” idea was an industry vision, not a count of sensors already deployed. A 2013 presentation by Janusz Bryzek proposed a roadmap for speeding up high-volume sensing applications: identify promising uses, group them into a manageable number of sensing platforms, assess technology options for each platform, and invite a wider community to help develop them. A 2015 Trillion Sensor Summit report reflects the discussion’s continued visibility, but the historical forecasts should not be mistaken for verified outcomes.

What was the Trillion Sensor Summit?

The title refers to a December 9–10, 2015, summit in Orlando. An indexed EE Times result for R. Colin Johnson’s report says the event discussed the spread of sensor-equipped smartphones and other smart devices, including semiconductor sensors beyond MEMS. The full report page is not available here, so this description is limited to what the indexed result establishes.

The broader TSensors movement was organized around a forward-looking proposition: sensing could become pervasive as devices gained the ability to measure their surroundings and users. In Bryzek’s November 2013 presentation, “trillion sensors” described that ambition; it was not a verified installed-base figure.

How the proposed roadmap worked

Bryzek’s presentation outlined a sequence for turning broad application ideas into development work:

  1. Gather visions for high-volume applications. Identify sensing uses that could reach large populations or deployment volumes.
  2. Group applications into sensing platforms. Rather than designing every product from scratch, map overlapping needs to a limited number of platforms. The presentation’s slide 12 states: “Convert visionary sensor applications into a limited number of TSensing Platforms.”
  3. Characterize technology options. For each platform, examine the sensor and system technologies that could meet the application’s needs.
  4. Open development challenges. Bring a broader development community into solving platform-level problems.

This was a proposal described in a 2013 talk, not evidence that a specific program completed these stages or remains active today. The presentation also suggested possible funding from customers, supply-chain companies, crowdfunding, philanthropic organizations, governments, and partnerships among academic, government, and industry groups.

Which applications were expected to drive sensor growth?

The presentation named overlapping areas rather than providing a current market ranking. Its demand drivers included mobile devices, wearables, digital health, the Internet of Things (IoT), context computing, and environmental monitoring. The underlying idea was that smart systems combine computing, communication, and sensing: a device can measure something, process or transmit the result, and use it to inform an action or service.

ELEGOO 37-in-1 Sensor Modules Kit with Tutorial Compatible with Arduino
  • Build a 37-Module Sensor Lab: Add motion, distance, light, sound, temperature, touch, display and control functions to compatible UNO, MEGA, Nano, ESP-32 or STM32 projects for prototyping, classroom experiments and maker builds
  • Explore Input Sensors and Motion: Experiment with GY-521 motion sensing, PIR detection, ultrasonic ranging, temperature and humidity, DS18B20, flame, Hall, touch, light, sound, tilt, tracking and obstacle-avoidance modules
  • Add Displays, Timing and Control: Use the LCD1602, DS1307 real-time clock, joystick, rotary encoder, relay, buzzers, RGB LEDs and infrared modules to build clocks, alarms, counters, status displays and automated projects
  • Follow Guided Projects Materials: Use digital tutorial materials, datasheets, wiring diagrams and example code for compatible UNO R3, MEGA 2560 and Nano boards, then adjust thresholds, timing and logic to create custom experiments
  • Module-Only Expansion Kit: Controller board, USB cable, breadboard and jumper wires are not included; use 6.5–9 V DC only with the included power module, verify pin requirements before wiring and keep the laser emitter away from eyes

That framing matters because sensor volume alone does not make a useful system. A platform must suit the application’s measurement requirements and work within its power, connectivity, data-processing, and deployment constraints.

What did the presentation claim about scale and economic impact?

The figures below are historical claims from Bryzek’s November 2013 presentation. Some are forecasts attributed there to other organizations; others are scenario calculations. They are not current measurements or independently verified outcomes.

Figure How the 2013 presentation framed it
212% annual growth The presentation’s stated growth rate for mobile sensor volumes from 2007 to 2012.
45 trillion networked sensors over 20 years A vision cited in the presentation, not a verified count or current forecast.
$1 trillion networked-sensor market by 2020 A historical forecast the presentation attributed to Cisco.
$15 trillion in IoT value by 2020 A forecast the presentation attributed to Cisco and GE, not a measured result established here.
105 million additional jobs A scenario calculated in the presentation from assumptions about sensor and smart-system prices, revenue per employee, and an indirect-jobs multiplier—not an observed employment outcome.

Because these numbers come from a 2013 presentation, their dates and original framing are essential. The available evidence does not establish whether later deployments met the trillion-sensor vision or whether the forecasts came true.

What could have blocked the roadmap?

Bryzek’s presentation listed challenges across adoption, engineering, infrastructure, and commercialization. They show why multiplying sensor counts would not, by itself, deliver useful systems:

  • User adoption: A technically capable sensor platform still needs a use that people or organizations will adopt.
  • Commercialization cycle time: Moving from a promising concept to a deployed product can take too long to support rapid growth.
  • Standardization: Inconsistent interfaces and approaches can make platforms harder to integrate and scale.
  • Useful algorithms: Raw measurements need interpretation to support reliable decisions or services.
  • Wireless bandwidth sharing: Many connected devices may compete for limited wireless capacity.
  • Power sources: Sensors need practical ways to operate within their deployment’s energy constraints.
  • Low-latency network architecture: Some applications need data and responses to move quickly through the system.
  • Sensor-data processing: Large data volumes require suitable processing and handling.
  • Funding: Research, development, and commercialization all need resources.

These were challenges identified in the presentation, not a current assessment of which ones have been solved or remain the most important.

How to read the “trillion sensors” claim today

Read it as a historical industry ambition and roadmap, not as a present-day deployment statistic. The 2013 presentation is primary evidence for what Bryzek proposed and forecast; it is not independent confirmation of the forecasts. The 2015 EE Times event summary shows that sensor proliferation remained a subject of industry discussion, but the indexed result alone does not establish what the summit concluded or what later adoption achieved.
