A cell-level wireless battery-management system replaces some of the isolated wired links between cell-monitoring units and the battery controller with a radio link. The sensors and safety-related work remain close to the cells; wireless changes how their data reaches the controller, not what the battery-management system must do.
How cell-level wireless battery monitoring works
Cell-monitoring units (CMUs) sit near the cells they monitor. They measure cell voltage and temperature, run local diagnostics and housekeeping, and support balancing and thermal-management actions. A battery-management unit (BMU), or another controller, receives the monitoring data over a wireless connection instead of relying on the traditional isolated daisy-chain wiring between CMUs and the controller.
That arrangement preserves a key division of work: sensing and local functions stay at the cell modules, while wireless carries information across the pack. The radio link can also help maintain galvanic isolation between high-voltage cell groups and the low-voltage controller. It does not eliminate the need for accurate measurements, balancing, diagnostics, isolation, or functional-safety validation.
What “wireless” replaces—and what it does not
- Replaced: the communication harness links between monitoring units and the controller in architectures designed for wireless operation.
- Still required: cell voltage and temperature sensing, monitoring electronics, local diagnostics, balancing-related functions, controller logic, and a validated safety architecture.
- Changed: the communication channel must now be designed and validated for radio reliability, synchronization, cybersecurity, and operation in the battery environment.
Why engineers are considering wireless BMS designs
Removing inter-unit harness wiring can reduce assembly work and give pack designers more flexibility in cell layout, attachment, and detachment. It may also improve serviceability and make lifecycle data access easier. Those benefits have to be weighed against the engineering and validation work introduced by radio communication.

Analog Devices said in a 9 September 2020 announcement that its wBMS, deployed with General Motors’ Ultium platform, could save up to 90% of wiring and up to 15% of battery-pack volume, and reported ASIL-D support. These are ADI’s published claims for that system and period, not independent measurements or current industry-wide averages.
Wired and wireless BMS: the engineering trade-off
| Design consideration | Wired CMU-to-controller links | Wireless CMU-to-controller links |
|---|---|---|
| Harness and assembly | Requires communication wiring between monitoring units and controller. | Can remove those harness links, reducing wiring and potentially simplifying assembly. |
| Pack layout and service | Harness routing constrains placement and can complicate module changes. | Can allow more flexible cell attachment and detachment; serviceability depends on the system design. |
| Isolation | Requires an isolation strategy for communications across high-voltage cell islands. | A radio link can preserve galvanic isolation between cell-side electronics and a low-voltage controller. |
| Communication environment | Does not depend on an in-pack radio link. | Must be validated for RF reliability, interference, reflections, packet integrity, and synchronization inside the pack. |
| Safety and security | Requires functional-safety validation and appropriate security controls. | Requires those same system-level validations, with wireless communication included in the safety and cybersecurity analysis. |
| Cost and lifecycle | Harness material and assembly are part of total system cost. | Potential harness savings must be balanced against radio hardware, validation, manufacturing tests, and service requirements. |
The table describes design considerations, not a universal winner. The right choice depends on pack geometry, manufacturing process, reliability targets, service model, and total system cost.

Radio reliability becomes part of the battery design
Wireless BMS links may use a robust 2.4 GHz ISM radio or an ultra-wideband (UWB) channel. Either way, a metal battery enclosure and the surrounding electronics make in-pack behavior a product-development concern, not a detail that can be assumed from a radio’s nominal range. Rohde & Schwarz describes manufacturing-test solutions for wireless BMS links, reflecting the need to verify radio performance as part of production.

- RF coexistence and performance under interference and reflections.
- Packet integrity, communication timing, and synchronization across monitoring units.
- Cybersecurity and functional-safety analysis of the communication path.
- End-of-line testing that checks the wireless link in the assembled product.
- Service procedures for diagnosing a communication fault as well as a sensing fault.
Wireless therefore moves some complexity from harness routing into radio design, system validation, and manufacturing test. Its value depends on whether that exchange improves the complete pack rather than merely reducing wire count.

Evidence beyond electric vehicles
On 22 June 2023, Toshiba reported a demonstration of BLE communication between a cell-monitoring unit and a battery-management unit in an actual storage-battery system exposed to severe interference and reflections. Toshiba said expected communication errors were reduced to less than one per 10-year period for the demonstrated system and use case. The company described it as the first demonstration of BLE monitoring in that storage-battery context; the figure should be understood as Toshiba’s result for that specific design and demonstration, not as a general reliability rate for BLE or wireless BMS products.

A reference design can help establish feasibility, but production readiness is a system-level determination. Evaluate the complete pack and its intended operating conditions, rather than treating a vendor’s radio feature or a single safety claim as sufficient evidence.
- Define the pack architecture. Identify the cell groupings, CMUs, controller, isolation boundaries, and which wired links the wireless design is intended to remove.
- Set communication requirements. Specify measurement timing, synchronization, data integrity, and behavior when a link is interrupted or degraded.
- Validate the actual RF environment. Test the assembled pack across relevant interference, reflections, and coexistence conditions.
- Review safety and security. Confirm that functional-safety validation and cybersecurity controls cover the complete communication path and its failure modes.
- Plan manufacturing and service. Define end-of-line radio tests and procedures for distinguishing communication problems from sensing or cell problems.
- Compare total system cost. Include harness and assembly effects alongside wireless hardware, validation, testing, and lifecycle service requirements.
Production evidence is specific to a product and application. ADI’s 2020 Ultium announcement and Toshiba’s 2023 storage-battery demonstration illustrate different use cases; neither establishes that every architecture, radio, or pack is ready for production without its own validation.
