U.S. soccer participation is rising, and organizations are putting money into community programs, coaching, and places to play. But the headline growth figures cover participants of all ages, while the available youth figures describe one organization’s network—not every child playing in the country. The evidence points to expanding activity and grassroots investment, not a measured national youth-soccer market or a guaranteed financial return.

Is youth soccer growing in the U.S.?

The broader U.S. soccer base is growing. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) reported a record year in 2025, with growth in both outdoor and indoor participation. Those totals include adults, so they should not be presented as youth enrollment.

Measure SFIA-reported result What it tells you
Outdoor soccer 16.8 million U.S. participants in 2025, up 15.8% from 2024, according to SFIA’s 2026 reporting. All-age participation, not a count of registered children.
Indoor soccer 6.6 million U.S. participants in 2025, up 10.5% from 2024, according to SFIA’s 2026 reporting. A separate all-age measure; it should not be added to outdoor participation as a unique-player total.
Outdoor participation trend Seven consecutive years of growth through 2025, according to SFIA’s 2026 reporting. A sustained national trend, but not a youth-only series.

SFIA’s 2026 State of Soccer takeaways say children ages 6–12 were the largest single outdoor age group, at 5.5 million participants. However, some of the fastest-growing age cohorts were adults 35 and older: outdoor participation among Americans ages 45–54 rose 247% from 2018 to 2025. SFIA also reported a 60% increase in Hispanic outdoor participation from 2022 to 2025 and a 66% increase in female outdoor participation from 2018 to 2025. These figures show changes in the broader game; by themselves, they do not establish youth enrollment totals or explain why participation changed.

How many kids play organized soccer?

US Youth Soccer says its network supports 2.5 million registered players annually through 54 member state associations and 10,000 clubs and leagues. It also reports nearly one million administrators, coaches, and volunteers. These are the organization’s own network figures, not a census of all U.S. youth players. The organization’s programs include both recreational and competitive play.

Will the 2026 World Cup grow youth soccer?

It could encourage more people to try soccer, but lasting youth growth is not guaranteed. SFIA’s historical comparison complicates the idea that a World Cup produces an immediate participation surge: outdoor participation fell 1.1% during 2014, and outdoor and indoor participation fell 4.4% and 3.1%, respectively, during 2018. Participation rose in 2023 after the 2022 tournament. SFIA suggests that the 2026 tournament’s summer timing and U.S. host setting may better align inspiration with favorable playing conditions. That is a possibility to watch, not a proven forecast.

Even if interest increases around the tournament, converting it into recurring youth participation will depend on whether families can find affordable programs, coaches, and available places to play. Later participation data will be needed to determine whether any World Cup-related attention produces sustained growth.

Where is money being invested in youth soccer?

Documented funding is directed toward participation programs, community access, coaching, and soccer infrastructure. These announcements describe grants and philanthropic or organizational initiatives; they do not establish a national market valuation or an investor return.

Initiative Funding or target reported What it supports or represents
U.S. Soccer’s 2024 Innovate to Grow cycle $3 million awarded in the 2023–2024 initiative, announced in February 2024. Member-led projects, including access programs, coach development, regional league improvements, and grassroots programming.
Soccer Forward Foundation U.S. Soccer reported more than $10 million in seed funding at the foundation’s June 2024 launch. Work to align stakeholders, share research and digital resources, expand accessible places to play, and develop lower-cost program models.
Soccer Will campaign At its January 29, 2026 announcement, the U.S. Soccer Foundation reported $13 million raised toward a $30 million goal and set a target of reaching 10 million youth by 2030. The Foundation described mini-pitches, community partnerships, health hubs, and coach-mentor programs as parts of its approach. The fundraising amount is a dated campaign status, not a current balance.

The 2024 Innovate to Grow cycle had specific eligibility and design requirements: applicants had to be eligible members, propose a one-to-three-year program, contribute funding themselves or with a partner, and align with U.S. Soccer’s player-development, coaching, and safety philosophies. It was a defined past cycle, not evidence that applications are currently open. Check U.S. Soccer’s announcement for the initiative’s terms and seek current guidance before planning around a grant.

At the Soccer Forward Foundation launch, U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said: “The launch of the Soccer Forward Foundation represents our unwavering commitment to removing barriers and creating opportunities to ensure soccer is a welcoming and accessible sport for everyone in America.” This states the organization’s intent; it is not independent evidence of program impact. U.S. Soccer’s 2025 strategic framework describes “In Service to Soccer” as a member-focused effort to bring soccer everywhere, achieve more soccer success, and unlock investment.

What is holding youth soccer back?

Interest cannot turn into regular play without capacity and access. SFIA identifies fields, league capacity, equipment affordability, coach availability, and access in lower-income communities as factors that can affect whether participation growth lasts.

  • Not enough usable playing time: A program can attract interest but still have too few field hours or league places to accommodate it.
  • Costs and access barriers: Equipment affordability and access in lower-income communities matter alongside whether a program is nearby and practical for families to attend.
  • People to run programs: Coaches are part of the capacity challenge, as are referees when leagues expand.
  • Retention: A first season or short-term increase does not show whether children can continue playing. Projects should distinguish initial participation from repeat participation over time.

What do families need to get started?

Start with the local program rather than assuming every child needs a full set of equipment or a competitive club. US Youth Soccer points families to its member state associations, which can help locate affiliated clubs and leagues. Ask programs what ages they accept, whether they offer recreational or competitive play, what the schedule and costs are, and what equipment they provide or require.

  1. Find local options: Use the state-association route on US Youth Soccer’s About page to identify a nearby association, club, or league.
  2. Choose the right format: Ask whether a recreational or competitive program—or a school or community option—is a better fit for the child’s experience, schedule, and goals.
  3. Confirm practical details: Check fees, practice and game locations, transportation needs, season dates, and what happens if a child misses a session.
  4. Check equipment before buying: Ask whether the club supplies a ball or other gear and what size it recommends for the child’s age and program. If a family needs to purchase a ball, choose one that matches those instructions; equipment affordability is a recognized access issue, not a reason to assume buying gear is required for every program.

Is youth soccer a new investment frontier?

The defensible case is that soccer participation is expanding and organizations are funding ways to widen access and build grassroots capacity. The available figures do not establish a comprehensive dollar value for the U.S. youth-soccer market, a national spending breakdown, or expected returns. For families, the next step is finding an accessible local program; for community partners, it is judging whether a project can turn interest into safe, affordable, recurring play.
