In an informal 2025 experiment, Reddit users and a Futurism reporter asked ChatGPT to make “the most controversial” image it could. The reported results ranged from familiar political satire to disturbing imagery—but the story was an anecdotal snapshot, not a controlled test of ChatGPT or a guide to what it can generate today.
What happened when people asked ChatGPT for a controversial image?
A Reddit thread featured images made in response to the prompt “the most controversial photo it is allowed to make.” Futurism reporter Noor Al-Sibai then tried a related request, asking ChatGPT for the “most controversial image” it could create. The report, published April 26, 2025, recounts both the Reddit examples and the reporter’s own exchange. Read the Futurism report.
According to Al-Sibai, ChatGPT initially responded with disclaimers about OpenAI’s content guidelines and suggested five possible subjects, one of them a satirical take on AI taking jobs. After the reporter confirmed twice that they wanted to continue, ChatGPT generated an image titled “The Algorithm Decides.”

Reddit users’ examples
Futurism described a range of user-submitted images. Some were recognizable political or social satire; others were deliberately shocking. Examples included a photorealistic-looking Jesus making an obscene gesture in front of a burning American flag, a disturbing image of a baby’s head on a dinner plate, and wealthy businesspeople feasting as the world burned beside an “everything is fine” sign.

The reporter’s “The Algorithm Decides” image
The reporter’s image depicted a blindfolded woman representing justice alongside robots and scenes connected to finance, protest, and housing. ChatGPT described it as “a jab at algorithmic bias, digital echo chambers, and Big Tech’s influence on truth and justice,” as quoted in Al-Sibai’s report.
Other described images
The report also described television-headed figures and phone imagery intended to evoke media overload, digital addiction, capitalism, ignorance, and power. Another image showed a robot on trial before a jury that included Karl Marx, Martin Luther King Jr., Ayn Rand, and Larry David. Al-Sibai noted the comic mismatch of Larry David among the other jurors.

What can this experiment actually tell us?
It shows what Futurism reported seeing in one Reddit thread and what its reporter says happened in one ChatGPT interaction. It does not establish how often ChatGPT generates any of these kinds of images, whether the examples are representative, or how the system would respond under controlled and repeatable conditions.

The comparison is especially difficult to reproduce: Futurism said the original Reddit post was deleted and had not been archived before removal, and the exact prompts for some notable images were not disclosed. The report also gives no measurable definition of “controversial,” and no named statistic or benchmark. The outputs are examples, not evidence of a stable category of content that ChatGPT will consistently allow.

Does the report describe ChatGPT’s current image capabilities?
No. The article documents an interaction from April 26, 2025. It does not establish what ChatGPT’s current image-generation features, model versions, availability, or safety policies are. Those details can change, so the story should be read as a historical account of the reported exchange—not as a current how-to or policy reference.
