There is no verified, definitive top five of the rarest Pokémon cards with a known price for a perfect copy. The strongest documented examples include the Pikachu Illustrator and Trophy Pikachu No. 1 Trainer; recent high-grade Charizard sales offer useful price comparisons, but do not establish a rarity ranking. The figures below are completed auction sales, not current asking prices or guaranteed replacement costs.
What “rarest” and “perfect” mean here
Rarity can mean different things: a limited award distribution, a small number of known surviving examples, a low grading population, or simply a card that seldom appears for sale. Those measures are not interchangeable, and the available records do not establish a single authoritative ranking of the five rarest cards.
“Perfect” also needs a precise definition. The sales below are for cards graded PSA Gem Mint 10 or PSA 10, not a claim that a card is literally flawless. A card with a separate enhancement, such as MBA Gold Diamond, is not directly equivalent to an unenhanced card of the same numerical grade.

Why it is rare
Pikachu Illustrator was a 1998 illustration contest prize, not a card distributed through an ordinary booster pack. Guinness World Records notes that collectors also prize it because it was designed by Atsuko Nishida, credited as Pikachu’s original creator. Guinness World Records’ record reports that, at the time of its account, the PSA Gem Mint 10 example was the only known copy at that grade.

What top-grade copies have sold for
Guinness records a PSA Gem Mint 10 Pikachu Illustrator sale through Goldin Auctions for $16,492,000 on 16 February 2026. That figure includes the buyer’s premium, so it is not directly comparable to an auction hammer price quoted without fees. It is a historical sale benchmark, not an assured price for a future purchase.
A different Pikachu Illustrator, graded PSA 9 and bearing an MBA Gold Diamond enhancement, sold for $5,000,000 at Heritage Auctions’ 18–19 September 2026 auction. Heritage described the card as one of 15 PSA Mint 9 copies, with only one example graded higher. The enhancement applies to that specific card; its sale should not be treated as a standard PSA 9 price or as a PSA 10 result. Heritage Auctions reported the sale and population description.

Trophy Pikachu No. 1 Trainer: a scarce tournament award
Distribution and scarcity
The Trophy Pikachu No. 1 Trainer, 2nd Tournament, is associated with the 1998 Lizardon Mega Battle. Heritage Auctions estimates that 15 copies of this version were awarded. That is an estimate in the auction description, not a definitive census of surviving cards.
Recorded sale and missing top-grade price
A PSA Mint 9 example sold through Heritage Auctions for $450,000 on 12 December 2025. Heritage’s lot page states a 25% buyer’s premium, so keep that auction context in mind when comparing the reported amount with other sales. The cited record does not establish a sale price for a PSA 10 copy, so a perfect-grade price cannot be stated from this evidence. See Heritage Auctions’ lot record.

High-grade Charizards show why price is not a rarity ranking
Two September 2026 Heritage archive results illustrate how much high-grade cards can sell for without proving that they belong in a definitive rarest-five list:
| Card | Grade and company | Recorded sale | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legendary Collection reverse holo Charizard | PSA 10 | $575,000, Heritage archive, September 2026 | A high-grade sale; not proof of a particular place in a rarity ranking. |
| Gold Star Charizard | PSA 10 | $475,000, Heritage archive, September 2026 | A high-grade sale; not proof of a particular place in a rarity ranking. |
These are useful comparisons for sale prices, but the cited archive results do not provide the rarity evidence needed to label either card one of the next rarest after the trophy examples. Heritage Auctions’ searchable Pokémon sold-lot archive lists the results.

Why a verified “five rarest” price list is not possible
The available records support two trophy-card examples and two high-grade comparison sales, but they do not substantiate two additional named cards with both defensible rarity evidence and a verified perfect-grade sale price. Filling out five places would mean presenting an unsupported ranking or inventing missing prices.

- A PSA 9 result cannot be presented as the price of a PSA 10, and a card with a special enhancement needs to be identified as such.
- A completed sale shows what one buyer paid in one auction context; it does not show what another example costs today or whether one is currently available.
For a purchase decision, check the exact card and grade, the sale date and auction venue, and whether the published amount includes the buyer’s premium. A current asking price requires a current listing; none of the historical sale figures above establishes present availability.
