No. The evidence does not show that AI data centers in general need 100 hours of stored electricity. What it does show is that data-center demand is growing, that server loads run close to flat across the day and need firm power, and that utilities and developers are weighing a portfolio of generation, grid upgrades, storage, and demand flexibility. Whether a specific facility needs long-duration storage depends on its own circumstances, and no published source settles that question for a particular project.

How much electricity data centers are projected to use

Published estimates differ because they measure different things: a share of total U.S. electricity, a share of commercial-sector consumption, or server-only electricity in a future year. The main figures are below.

Measure Figure Scope and conditions Source
Data centers’ share of U.S. electricity, 2023 About 4.4% Share of total U.S. electricity; estimate from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) 2024 report U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) summary of the LBNL report, in the Electricity Demand Growth Resource Hub
Projected share of U.S. electricity, 2028 About 6.7% to 12% Forecast range from the same LBNL 2024 series; a projection, not an outcome Same DOE hub
Data-center servers’ share of commercial-sector electricity, 2025 About 7% Attributed to servers across EIA’s modeling cases; the base is commercial-sector consumption, not total U.S. electricity U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), “Data center server energy use grows across the commercial building stock”, May 19, 2026
Server electricity in 2050 446 to 818 billion kilowatt-hours (BkWh) Range across EIA AEO2026 cases; the high end is the High Electricity Demand case. Covers server electricity only, not total facility use EIA, May 19, 2026, same article
Data centers’ share of U.S. electricity, 2030 Up to 9% of U.S. electricity generation annually Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) 2024 estimate, as cited by DOE; compared with 4% of total load in 2023. The base differs from the LBNL series DOE, “Clean Energy Resources to Meet Data Center Electricity Demand”

Reading the figures side by side

  • Keep the years apart. The 2023 and 2025 values are estimates of the recent past or present. The 2028, 2030 and 2050 values are forecasts that depend on scenario assumptions.
  • Do not compare the percentages directly. The LBNL figure uses total U.S. electricity as its base, the EPRI figure uses generation, and the EIA figure uses commercial-sector consumption.
  • Separate servers from facilities. Server figures leave out cooling and other support loads, which are part of total facility electricity.
  • Treat every figure as U.S.-only. None of these estimates should be extended to other countries.

Why a flat load shape matters, and where that reasoning stops

Grid planners usually think in terms of daily peaks and troughs. Server loads behave more like a constant baseline. EIA states the following in its AEO2026 analysis, published May 19, 2026:

“Data center servers are assumed to have an end-use load shape that is essentially flat, meaning, in effect, that demand for electricity to power servers is consistent across all hours in a day.”

That flat profile explains why the sources describe data centers as needing firm power continuously, and why a large load can strain a regional grid. DOE adds that data-center demand varies by region, that some sites may be limited by latency-related siting needs, and that forecasts shift as AI use cases and efficiency improve.

A flat load does not prove a 100-hour backup requirement. A constant load tells you how much energy must be delivered each hour. It does not tell you how long supply must survive if the grid, generation, or transmission fails, how often such failures occur, or how much interruption the owner will accept. EIA’s flat-profile assumption is a modeling choice for server electricity, not a measurement of every facility.

What a 100-hour storage target actually means

Storage duration is the number of hours a system can discharge at a stated power level before its stored energy runs out. Duration alone is incomplete. A usable description also needs:

  • Power rating (megawatts, MW, or gigawatts, GW): how quickly energy can be delivered.
  • Energy capacity (megawatt-hours, MWh, or gigawatt-hours, GWh): how much energy is stored.
  • Efficiency and replenishment: how much energy is lost in charging and discharging, and how and when the store is refilled.
  • Operational role: whether the system covers outages, shifts load across hours, or serves another purpose.

Power and energy are different quantities, and the difference drives the arithmetic. Consider an illustrative 100 MW load that must run for 100 hours entirely from storage. That requires 10,000 MWh (10 GWh) of usable energy before any charging losses. This example is arithmetic, not a figure for any named facility or from the cited sources. It shows why a “100-hour” label without a power rating says little. In this article, 100 hours is a scenario for testing a design, not a benchmark.

Does a particular AI data center need 100 hours?

The answer depends on the facility. Four questions narrow it down:

  1. Reliability target. How long can the facility tolerate an interruption, and what does one cost? The sources reviewed do not give a standard outage-tolerance figure for AI workloads.
  2. Grid access. How firm is the connection, and how much supply margin does the region have?
  3. Power mix. Which resources will serve the load, and how much of it must be carbon-free or matched to carbon-free generation on an hourly basis?
  4. Location. Siting and regional constraints determine which options are physically and administratively available.

Only after these questions are answered does a storage duration become a meaningful choice. A facility with a firm connection and a short reliability target may need little long-duration storage. One with a weak connection and a high cost of interruption may need considerably more. The sources do not establish where a typical facility falls.

The portfolio behind data-center power

DOE’s guidance on clean energy resources for data centers describes a portfolio rather than a single answer. The DOE’s Powering America’s AI Future data center resource hub covers the wider program. The option groups in the portfolio, and what the cited sources leave open, are shown below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option group Role DOE assigns What the sources do not establish
Solar, land-based wind, battery storage, and efficiency Scalable near-term additions Cost or 100-hour performance relative to the other groups
Existing nuclear and hydropower Existing resources in the portfolio How much of their output is available to new data-center load
Next-generation geothermal and nuclear Clean firm power Commercial readiness and construction timelines
Transmission and grid expansion Grid capacity to move power where load is Regional cost and timing
Demand-side flexibility and planning Managing when and how much load draws power How much load a given facility can realistically shift

Storage sits inside this portfolio, not above it. DOE’s framing treats grid infrastructure, generation, efficiency, planning, and flexibility as parts of the solution alongside storage.

How to compare storage with other options

DOE’s materials support the importance of reliability, affordability, location, and flexibility, but they do not supply a comparable 100-hour cost table. A fair comparison has to answer seven questions:

Batteries during a grid stress event

A battery can ride through a short stress event if its power rating matches the load and it holds enough energy for the event. Whether it can carry a data center through a multi-day shortfall depends on the same duration and power figures described above. The sources cited here do not quantify how much storage a given facility would need for that. Storage on its own is not a supply-adequacy fix.

Cooling storage is a different tool

NREL reported on a DOE-funded Cold Underground Thermal Energy Storage project in its January 17, 2025 announcement, “Reducing Data Center Peak Cooling Demand and Energy Costs With Underground Thermal Energy Storage”. The concept uses off-peak electricity to build an underground reserve of cold energy that can help serve cooling during peak periods. The project will examine technical and economic viability and describes possible seasonal-scale storage.

Who pays for the upgrades

DOE’s Office of Policy published a rate-design brief, “Electricity Rate Designs for Large Loads: Evolving Practices and Opportunities”, on January 17, 2025. It identifies the following issues for large-load customers:

  • Assigning system costs fairly among customers.
  • Avoiding stranded investment in utility assets that are underused.
  • Managing resource-adequacy risk if demand exceeds supply.
  • Sharing the risk of commercializing advanced geothermal, small modular reactors, and long-duration storage.
  • Accommodating carbon-free matching or onsite generation.

Those questions determine who carries the cost of storage and firm generation, which makes contract and tariff design as consequential as the technology itself. The headline’s “billion-dollar” framing is not sized by any source cited here. Those sources also do not support a guaranteed project return, or a conclusion that any one storage technology is already the economic winner.
