Team colors do three different jobs, and they are easy to confuse. On the field, contrasting shirts help players, officials, and spectators tell who is who. Off the field, a palette becomes a symbol that fans wear to show belonging, and that symbol can outlast the players and coaches who first wore it. The third possible role is the most debated: whether colors shape how players behave or how officials judge them. Some studies report such links, but the evidence is mixed and heavily dependent on context, so claims that a color makes a team win, or makes athletes aggressive, go well beyond what has been shown.

Color as a visual tool on the field

The most practical function of a team color is figure-ground separation. In a fast game, a player has to be picked out from the grass, the crowd, and the opposing side in a fraction of a second. Schleifer and Tamir, writing in Frontiers in Psychology in October 2023, describe color as a way to separate figures from backgrounds and to draw boundaries between competitors in dynamic sports environments. Their argument covers spectators, but also players and officials, who need to read the field quickly.

Telling players, goalkeepers, and officials apart

Uniform color also encodes role. The same conceptual analysis points to distinct colors for roles such as goalkeepers and referees. A goalkeeper wearing a shirt that differs from the outfield players is a visual signal that the player has a different job and different rules to follow. A referee in a palette that matches neither team serves the same purpose for the officials and the audience.

These are design arguments, not measurements. The 2023 analysis explains why contrast and role coding are useful; it does not time how quickly viewers identify players in wearing one palette versus another. Readers should treat visibility as a plausible functional benefit, not a number.

Team colors as a symbol of identity

Once a palette is established, it becomes a shorthand for the club. Schleifer and Tamir argue that colors can carry a team’s history forward when individual people leave. In professional sport, players and coaches often move between clubs, while the badge and colors tend to stay. Their conclusion is that a recognizable palette can preserve identity across changes in personnel. This is an interpretive argument from a conceptual analysis, not a measured universal law.

“The color, which became the most distinct and recognizable symbol of the sports teams, therefore became a torch that carries with it a significant value charge and a complete heritage of identity.” — Ron Schleifer and Ilan Tamir, Frontiers in Psychology (2023)

How fans take part

Identity becomes visible when supporters adopt the palette themselves. The authors describe fans carrying team colors into everyday clothing and accessories, and into the shared look of a match day through shirts, scarves, banners, and displays. Color lets a supporter signal affiliation without a word, and lets a crowd present a single visual atmosphere. Wearing a shirt or scarf in the team’s colors is a way of joining that atmosphere, though the sources reviewed here describe this as participation, not as proof of loyalty.

Rebrands and color continuity

Rebrands show what happens when identity is contested. Simmons, Naraine, and Greenwell, in Sport Marketing Quarterly (2023), studied 669 fans of the Washington Football Team, the name the franchise used before it became the Commanders in 2022. Using an online questionnaire and rating-based conjoint analysis, they compared six associations: community integration, culture and traditions, nickname, logo, uniform style, and color scheme.

In their analyses, the color scheme was at least three times more important to fans than each of the other five tested associations. Respondents were more likely to view the rebrand favorably when the existing colors stayed. The study also reported possible brand friction when colors changed while fans still wore merchandise from before the rebrand. The finding comes from one team, one rebrand, and a survey of fans’ stated preferences. It is a useful signal about continuity, not a forecast for every franchise.

Do colors change behavior or judgment?

This is the claim that attracts the most attention and deserves the most caution. Studies in this area differ in design, sport, and outcome, and their results do not add up to a single rule.

The 1988 black-uniform penalty study

Frank and Gilovich, in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (January 1988), examined penalty records in professional football and ice hockey and ran two laboratory experiments. According to the PubMed abstract, teams in black uniforms ranked near the top of their leagues in penalties during the period studied, and when teams switched from nonblack to black uniforms, penalties increased immediately. The authors interpreted the laboratory findings as consistent with two processes: social perception, meaning how others such as referees judge a player, and self-perception, meaning how the player behaves given how he is dressed.

Penalty counts are observational, so the pattern across teams cannot isolate color from other differences between clubs, such as style of play or league position. The study is historically influential and well known, but it does not establish that black uniforms cause aggression in all settings, and it does not address offside calls or other decision types.

What a pooled estimate across sport studies says

A 2022 meta-analysis in the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology pooled 69 articles on color in sport. It reported a statistically significant average effect, θ̂ = 0.56, 95% CI [0.40, 0.72], p < .001. It also reported very high heterogeneity, I² = 96.97%, and noted that carefully controlled empirical work was scarce.

Those numbers describe color effects across the sport literature as a whole. They do not describe a team’s branding, fan loyalty, or the color of any particular uniform. High heterogeneity means the included studies disagree widely, so an average is a poor guide to any single game, team, or culture. The meta-analysis is the best reason to hold any broad claim loosely.

Sponsor logos that match team colors

A 2025 article by Son and Williams in the Journal of Applied Sport Management reported three experiments on team-colored sponsor logos on jerseys. According to the published abstract, a sponsor logo that matched the team’s colors positively predicted perceived jersey aesthetics and purchase intention, and the effect on purchase intention ran indirectly through aesthetics. The abstract does not establish that team colors make fans loyal, and it does not show that every color match raises sales. Effect sizes are not reported in the summary available for this article, so the strength of the effect cannot be judged here.

What the evidence does not show

  • No universally best color. The evidence does not rank hues. A color that reads well on one pitch, under one lighting setup, may not do so elsewhere.
  • No single cultural meaning. Nothing in the reviewed sources supports the idea that a color carries the same psychological meaning across cultures or sports.
  • No direct link from color to wins. None of the sources tests team results as an outcome of uniform color.
  • No proof that merchandise creates loyalty. Shirts and scarves are examples of how fans display affiliation. Buying them does not show that loyalty was caused by the purchase.

How to judge a claim about team colors

When a headline or a brand deck makes a claim about color and performance, sales, or behavior, check these points before accepting it:

  • Which sport and setting? Pitch, rink, broadcast, and stadium conditions differ, and so do the roles that color has to communicate.
  • Which outcome? Recognition, perceived aesthetics, stated preference, penalty counts, and purchase intention are separate measures.
  • Measured or argued? A conceptual analysis proposes mechanisms; an experiment or survey tests them under specific conditions.
  • How large and how variable? Check whether the source reports an effect size and confidence interval, and whether the included studies agree.
  • Which fans? A survey of one club’s supporters says little about other clubs or about people who have no attachment to the team.

Read this way, team colors are best understood as a practical visual system and a durable identity symbol. The stronger claim, that color changes how players and officials behave, rests on a small and uneven body of evidence, and it should be presented with the qualifications the studies themselves carry.
