If a once-white pillow has yellowed, I’d start with a washable pillow protector to help limit future moisture reaching it—not assume the pillow needs replacing. Before trying to whiten the stain, check the pillow’s care label and separate any removable cover from its insert: cleaning rules vary by fill and construction, and some foam inserts must not be washed or submerged.
What I’d buy first: a washable pillow protector
A washable protector fits this problem better than a stain remover if your goal is to keep a pillow cleaner going forward. It sits between the pillowcase and pillow, adding a fabric barrier that may reduce moisture reaching the pillow. It cannot guarantee that discoloration will never return.
Compare protectors by pillow size, closure, fabric and breathability, and laundering instructions. Wash the protector and pillowcase as their labels direct. No particular protector discount is established here, so check the current listing rather than assuming one is part of Prime Big Deal Days.

Can you safely whiten the yellow pillow?
Yellowing commonly comes from accumulated sweat, body oils, and dead skin; saliva and skin-care products can contribute too. A stain alone cannot identify its exact cause. Before buying a laundry whitener or washing the pillow, check its care label and manufacturer instructions.

Check the cover and insert separately
A removable cover may be washable even when the insert is not. Tempur-Pedic’s guidance is explicit: “Do not wash or submerge the pillow insert unless the product’s care instructions specifically indicate it is washable.” Follow the instructions for your own pillow; that rule should not be generalized to every pillow construction.
Use whitener only when the care directions allow it
Clorox describes different laundering guidance for polyester-filled and down-filled pillows, illustrating why there is no universal bleach recipe. OxiClean White Revive is a non-chlorine oxygen bleach for white laundry and bedding, but its directions say to follow the item manufacturer’s guidance and test an inconspicuous area. Consider an oxygen-bleach whitener only for a pillow or removable cover whose care instructions permit it. Do not assume chlorine bleach or any other whitener is safe for every pillow.

When a replacement pillow makes sense
Yellowing by itself does not automatically mean a pillow must be replaced. Consider replacement if discoloration is excessive, the pillow remains odorous, it is worn or no longer provides suitable support, or its care requirements make it impractical to keep clean. Sleep Foundation recommends replacing pillows every one to two years, or sooner for excessive discoloration; that is its guidance, not a guarantee of a pillow’s lifespan.
