Yes—a major global PlayStation Network outage occurred on Friday, July 24, 2026. Sony’s service-status page listed problems across account management, gaming and social features, PlayStation Video, the PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct. The incident began at approximately 10:18 a.m. Eastern Time, and Sony’s status page later showed all services restored at about 3:41 p.m. Eastern Time.
This should be treated as a report of the July 24 incident, not as confirmation that PSN is down at the time you are reading this. The latest research check found the official status page showing normal operation, although a normal global status does not rule out an individual console, account, regional, or home-network problem.

When did the outage start, and when was PSN restored?

The restoration time is the point at which Sony’s status page indicated that all services were “up and running.” That does not necessarily mean every account, console, or region recovered at precisely the same moment. Large services can recover in stages, and cached sessions, Store requests, or account sign-ins may continue to fail temporarily while systems stabilize.
Why did the outage attract so much attention?
The incident coincided with the opening of the MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta. PlayStation’s announcement scheduled the beta for July 24–26, 2026, and said that players needed both an internet connection and a PlayStation Account to access it on PS5 and PC.

That timing meant players trying to enter the beta encountered the wider PSN disruption at the same time. Even if the beta software was installed correctly, account authentication and network access were still dependencies. PlayStation’s beta announcement explains the access requirements.
Was the cause an AWS outage or a DDoS attack?
The technical cause was not publicly confirmed in the sources reviewed. Online speculation pointed to possibilities including an Amazon Web Services disruption or a distributed denial-of-service attack, but those explanations should not be presented as established facts.

Sony’s status messaging acknowledged service problems and said that it was working to resolve them. It did not, in the reviewed material, provide a definitive root-cause explanation. Until Sony or a relevant infrastructure provider publishes confirmation, the accurate wording is that the cause remains unconfirmed.
Is PlayStation Network down right now?
The research check found the official PlayStation status page showing all listed services operating normally after the July 24 incident. Independent outage monitors also indicated that activity had returned to normal.

What to do if you still cannot connect
1. Check Sony’s official status page first
Open status.playstation.com and review every service category, not just gaming. Account Management or the Store may be impaired even when a particular game appears to be running normally.
If Sony shows a widespread incident, avoid repeatedly changing router settings or resetting the console. A home restart cannot repair a Sony-side outage. Wait for the status page to update and try again after restoration.

2. Test the console’s connection if PSN is normal
On PS5, open Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. On PS4, use Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. The test can help separate an internet or local-network failure from a PlayStation-account sign-in problem.
Pay attention to which stage fails:
- Internet connection fails: Investigate the router, modem, Wi-Fi signal, ISP, or Ethernet connection.
- Internet works but PlayStation Network sign-in fails: Recheck Sony’s status page and your account credentials before changing network hardware.
- Sign-in works but one game fails: Check that game’s own service status, maintenance notice, update state, and account requirements.
3. Restart local equipment only when the evidence points locally
If the official status page is normal and the console test shows a local failure, restart the modem and router, wait for them to reconnect fully, and then restart the console. If possible, compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable for PS5 can be useful for isolating a weak or unstable Wi-Fi connection, but it cannot restore PSN when Sony’s servers are unavailable.
4. Check account and console software issues
For an isolated problem, verify that:
- The console is connected to the intended home network.
- The PlayStation account can sign in through the normal account interface or PlayStation website.
- The console’s system software and the affected game are updated.
- The date and time are set automatically, since incorrect system time can interfere with authentication in some services.
- Any parental controls, privacy settings, subscription requirements, or game-specific access requirements are satisfied.
Do not factory-reset the console as a first response to a suspected platform outage. That can create additional setup and download work without addressing a Sony-side problem.
Can you play PS5 games during a PSN outage?
It depends on the game and what it needs from PSN. A fully installed, single-player game with no online authentication requirement may continue to work offline. Online multiplayer, cloud saves, friends and parties, digital-store purchases, account authentication, live-service games, and games requiring online checks may not.
Physical media can reduce dependence on downloading a game at the moment you want to install it, but it is not a universal outage workaround. Updates, online modes, downloadable content, license checks, and some game launches may still require an internet connection or PlayStation Account. The distinction is important: owning a disc does not make PSN’s online services available. It only changes how some game data is delivered and, in certain cases, how the game can be launched.
What about PlayStation Video and the Store?
The July 24 status information listed PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct as affected categories. Therefore, a user could be unable to watch network-dependent video, browse or purchase Store content, or use Sony’s direct shopping service even if a locally installed game appeared to launch.

Do not assume a failed Store purchase means your payment card is defective, and do not repeatedly submit the same transaction during a known service incident. Wait for the Store status to recover, then check your purchase history and account notifications before trying again.

Bottom line
The headline refers to a real global PSN outage on July 24, 2026—not a newly verified outage necessarily occurring now.
