The Pixel 5 was not a no-compromises flagship. Google chose a midrange Snapdragon 765G to build a lighter, compact phone around a smooth OLED display, a large-for-its-size battery, wireless charging, water resistance, and Pixel camera software. That trade deserves more credit than its processor tier suggests—but its weaker video performance and now-historical update promise belong in the same assessment.

Why the Pixel 5 deserves a fairer reading

In 2020, the Pixel 5 made a clear trade: it gave up the top-tier processor expected in a flagship to prioritize a manageable size and a strong set of everyday features. It measured 144.7 × 70.4 × 8.0 mm, weighed 151 g, and fit a 6.0-inch display into that body. Those numbers make “compact” more than a vague impression.

Its package was unusually complete for such a light phone. Google paired an OLED screen with refresh rates up to 90 Hz, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, a typical 4080 mAh battery, Qi wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, and IP68 water and dust resistance. Google’s Pixel 5 hardware specifications list those details.

The processor is the obvious compromise, not a hidden technicality: the Pixel 5 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G. It was capable midrange silicon, rather than the top-end chipset found in contemporary flagship phones. The point is not that Google secretly made a flagship; it built a different balance of size, features, and performance.

Google Pixel 6 5G, 128GB, Stormy Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Google Pixel 6 powered by Google’s first-generation Tensor processor, enabling advanced on-device AI features such as more natural voice typing, quick language translation, and improved image processing without relying heavily on cloud services.

How that balance worked in everyday use

Screen and performance

The 6.0-inch FHD+ OLED panel has a resolution of 1080 × 2340, a density of 432 ppi, and a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz, according to Google’s specifications. The high refresh rate made scrolling feel smoother than a standard 60 Hz screen, while the smaller display helped keep the phone’s overall dimensions down.

WIRED’s October 16, 2020 review praised the screen, battery life, and performance, describing the phone as having a “Really nice screen, great battery life (finally), and good performance.” That is a review-era assessment of everyday use, not evidence that the 765G matched the fastest processors of its time. WIRED’s Pixel 5 review also noted that video quality lagged competitors.

Battery life, with an important qualification

A 4080 mAh typical battery was substantial for a phone weighing 151 g. Google said the Pixel 5 offered all-day battery life and could last “up to 48 hours” with Extreme Battery Saver. That upper figure was a company claim based on third-party testing in California in mid-2020 on pre-production hardware and software, with Extreme Battery Saver enabled; it should not be read as normal-use runtime. Google’s launch announcement gives that qualification.

Cameras: stills were not the whole story

The rear cameras are a 12.2 MP main camera and a 16 MP ultrawide, with an 8 MP front camera. The camera hardware and Google’s image-processing approach helped make the phone appealing, but the trade-offs were not limited to its processor: WIRED specifically found video quality behind competing phones. Someone choosing primarily for video should weigh that criticism rather than assuming the Pixel’s camera reputation applies equally to every kind of capture.

What the Pixel 5 sacrificed—and what it kept

The phone did not spend every compromise to improve speed or camera video. It retained extras that can make a handset more convenient to own: Qi wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, and IP68 water and dust resistance. Those sit alongside the lower-weight body and 90 Hz OLED, rather than replacing them.

TechCrunch’s October 14, 2020 review called the phone compact compared with devices the reviewer had been testing and identified 5G and the larger battery as the main reasons to upgrade from the Pixel 4. That period comparison is useful if you were considering an upgrade then, but it is not a blanket case that every Pixel 4 owner needed to switch. TechCrunch’s review captures the reviewer’s contemporary perspective.

Software support: a launch promise, not a current guarantee

Google’s Pixel 5 specifications stated a minimum of three years of OS and security updates from first availability on the US Google Store. That was the original commitment made for the phone, not a claim that the Pixel 5 remains supported today. The cited documentation establishes the launch-era policy; it does not establish the phone’s current support status. Check Google’s current support information before relying on the device for security updates.

Is the Pixel 5 still worth buying?

It depends on the individual handset and what you need from it. The original case for the Pixel 5—compact dimensions, light weight, a smooth OLED screen, wireless charging, water resistance, and a substantial battery—remains clear from its specifications. But the available evidence here does not establish current used prices, device condition, carrier compatibility, repair-part availability, or present software support, so it cannot justify a general buy recommendation.

  • It may suit you if compact size and light weight matter more than having a top-tier processor, and the specific device is in good condition and works with your carrier.
  • Look elsewhere if you want the strongest video performance, modern flagship-class processing, or a device whose current security-update status you have confirmed and need to rely on.
  • Before buying used, verify the handset’s battery condition, carrier compatibility, physical and water-damage history, and current update status with the seller and manufacturer information. An IP68 rating is a product specification, not proof that a particular used phone remains water-resistant.
