The Pixel 4 remains my favorite Google phone design because its compact body, unusually smooth 90Hz OLED display, wireless charging, capable cameras and dedicated on-device hardware feel deliberately engineered rather than merely specification-driven. It can still be enjoyable to use, but Google lists both Pixel 4 models as no longer receiving Android version updates or security updates. That support status should shape any decision to keep or buy one in 2026.

Why the Pixel 4 hardware still stands out

The standard Pixel 4 combines a genuinely small form factor with features that were uncommon together at its 2019 launch. Google specified a 5.7-inch flexible OLED display with a 19:9 aspect ratio, 444 pixels per inch and Smooth Display refresh of up to 90Hz. It also included an always-on display and Now Playing, which can identify nearby music without sending the audio query to the cloud. The complete specification is documented by Google’s earlier Pixel hardware specifications.

Google’s launch description highlighted 6GB of RAM, the 90Hz screen and Pixel Neural Core, calling the phone “fast and powerful.” That is Google’s promotional launch wording, not a current benchmark, but it explains the hardware philosophy: use dedicated silicon for photography and contextual features instead of relying only on a faster general-purpose processor.

A compact phone that did not feel stripped down

The Pixel 4 offered the Snapdragon 855, Adreno 640 graphics, 6GB of LPDDR4x memory and a choice of 64GB or 128GB storage. Its small size is the defining physical trait: readers who prefer one-handed phones may find it more distinctive than many newer, larger handsets. The Pixel 4 XL is not simply a larger case option; it is a separate model with different dimensions and a larger display, so accessories and replacement parts must match the exact model.

Google-specific hardware, not just Android

Pixel Neural Core supported Google’s computational photography and on-device features. The phone also included the Titan M security module. Google said Titan M was designed to protect sensitive data and help maintain operating-system integrity; that is a launch-era security description and should not be read as evidence that an unsupported phone is secure today.

Pixel 4 specifications at a glance

Specification Pixel 4 (published figure)
Display 5.7-inch flexible OLED, FHD+, 444ppi, 19:9, up to 90Hz
Memory 6GB LPDDR4x
Storage 64GB or 128GB
Processor and graphics Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with Adreno 640
Battery 2,800mAh published capacity
Charging 18W wired charging and Qi-certified wireless charging
Durability rating IPx8 water protection, subject to Google’s wear-and-damage warnings
Security and imaging hardware Titan M security module and Pixel Neural Core

These are Google’s published specifications, not measurements of surviving devices. The specification page says water resistance can be compromised by normal wear, repair, disassembly or damage.

Does the Pixel 4 still hold up in 2026?

Software support is over

Google’s update-policy page lists Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL among phones that no longer receive Android version updates or security updates: Google’s Pixel software-update schedule. That is the most important present-day limitation. You can still use the phone for ordinary tasks, but you are choosing hardware outside Google’s stated update-support window. The page does not establish which specific vulnerabilities affect an individual device, so avoid treating the phone as either guaranteed unsafe or currently protected.

Battery condition depends on the individual handset

The original 2,800mAh rating describes a new device, not a six-plus-year-old battery. Capacity, runtime and charging behavior vary with age, heat and previous use, and no published figure establishes the health of every surviving Pixel 4. A phone that shuts down unexpectedly, drops percentage rapidly or becomes unusually hot needs evaluation rather than an assumption that its launch specification still applies.

Google’s safety manual advises against self-repair and recommends battery replacement through Google or an authorized service provider. It warns that disassembly can damage the phone and its water resistance, and that an incorrectly replaced battery can create hazards. Read the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL safety manual before arranging service; current provider availability and parts supply are not established here.

Water resistance is not a promise for an old phone

Although Google published an IPx8 rating, the company explicitly qualifies it. Wear, a prior repair, disassembly or physical damage can reduce protection. Treat a used Pixel 4 as vulnerable to liquid, especially after any repair, rather than relying on its original rating.

Network compatibility still requires checking

Google sold the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL unlocked and listed carrier partners at launch, but compatibility is not universal. Service depends on the carrier, supported network bands, region and account requirements. Confirm the exact model and your local carrier’s compatibility before buying; Google’s specifications also direct customers to check with carriers.

What to check before buying or keeping one

  1. Identify the model. Confirm Pixel 4 versus Pixel 4 XL before ordering a case, screen part or replacement battery.
  2. Verify carrier support. Check the phone’s model identifier and your carrier’s current compatibility tool, including required network support in your country.
  3. Inspect the battery behavior. Test charging, idle drain, heat and unexpected shutdowns during the seller’s return period.
  4. Inspect physical condition. Look for cracked glass, frame damage, camera-window scratches and signs of opening or liquid exposure.
  5. Decide whether unsupported software is acceptable. Avoid using it as the sole device for sensitive accounts if your risk tolerance requires ongoing manufacturer patches.
  6. Price it as used hardware. Google’s original US pre-order prices were $799 for Pixel 4 and $899 for Pixel 4 XL in 2019; those historical figures say nothing about current resale value.

Accessories that fit the Pixel 4 idea

Google announced a protective case designed for Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, along with Pixel Stand and a Pixel-compatible wireless car charger. Those announcements confirm product compatibility at launch, not current stock or quality. If you shop for a Pixel 4 accessory, confirm the listing identifies your exact model and check return terms.

Because the phone supports Qi wireless charging, a compatible charging stand can be useful if one is available in your market. Wireless charging does not solve an aged battery; it only changes how the device is powered.

My verdict

The Pixel 4 is still my favorite Google smartphone hardware because it delivers a rare combination of compact dimensions, a high-refresh OLED panel, wireless charging and Google’s custom imaging and security silicon. Those choices remain easy to appreciate even though the phone is old. In 2026, however, “holds up” means “still appealing and usable for the right owner,” not “fully supported modern phone.” Buy or keep one for its design and familiar Pixel experience only after accepting ended updates, checking the individual battery and confirming carrier compatibility.
