The Philosopher is an open-source plush toy project by Manolo Salsas that can be configured to run without cloud services—but the toy itself is not a self-contained computer. A Raspberry Pi Zero WH handles input and output inside the plush, while a nearby laptop does most of the processing. To keep the setup local, the builder must also choose a local language-model endpoint and local-capable speech software.
How the Philosopher Plush works
The plush is primarily an interface for a separate computer. Its Raspberry Pi Zero WH handles the microphone and camera input, speaker playback, and movement of a small servo in the toy’s head. A nearby laptop runs the more demanding tasks: speech recognition, face identity and emotion recognition, text-to-speech, conversation orchestration, and memory for individual people.
The Pi and laptop communicate over WebSocket. The laptop sends requests to the language-model endpoint over HTTP. In other words, the Pi Zero WH alone does not provide the complete conversational experience; the design also requires a computer and a language-model service.
Software and documented features
The repository names faster-whisper for speech recognition, dlib/face_recognition for face identity, FER+ ONNX for emotion recognition, and Kokoro or Piper for text-to-speech. It also documents configurable personalities, English and Spanish options, per-person memory, and an optional wake phrase. These are features described by the project, not independently verified performance results.

What “100% local” means in practice
The project describes a configuration intended to work without cloud services, internet access, or accounts, with data remaining on the user’s network. That depends on how the builder configures it: use a local language-model endpoint, such as Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM, or LM Studio, and choose local-capable speech and voice components.
The repository also lists OpenAI as an endpoint option and Edge voices as an online text-to-speech option. Using those choices would involve online services, so “100% local” describes one possible configuration rather than every setup. The project’s privacy description is the author’s claim, not an independent security audit.

Parts, computer requirements, and estimated cost
The project’s hardware list includes a Raspberry Pi Zero Wireless/Zero WH, USB hub, USB microphone, USB speaker, OV5647 CSI camera, SG90 micro-servo, Dupont cables, and a plush toy. The computer and language-model server are additional parts of the system; the author’s estimate excludes a computer the builder already owns.

Build considerations
The author documents several hardware issues encountered while building: USB power brownouts, microphone auto-gain behavior, and the need for hardware PWM to achieve smooth servo movement. These are useful areas to plan for, but the project materials do not establish that every builder will encounter them.
Local and online choices
The main implementation choices affect internet dependence and privacy. The project gives options but does not publish controlled benchmarks or comparative cost and performance data for them.

License and what the project claims
The project page and repository state that the software is MIT-licensed. The author says, “I’m not selling anything and the project collects nothing.” That is the author’s statement about the project, not an independent audit of every configuration or third-party service.
