The Perseids are a reliable annual meteor shower, known for frequent bright streaks and a summer peak that is convenient for many Northern Hemisphere observers. The next peak listed by the American Meteor Society is August 12–13, 2027, but a 79%-illuminated Moon is expected to interfere. Dark skies and a clear view matter more than any headline hourly rate.
What makes the Perseids famous?
NASA Science calls the Perseids “the most popular meteor shower of the year.” They return every summer, can produce many bright meteors, and are observable during warm-weather evenings in much of the Northern Hemisphere. Their popularity does not mean every observer will see a spectacular display: visibility depends on the Moon, clouds, local light pollution, latitude, and how long you watch.
The shower is active from July 17 through August 24 in the American Meteor Society’s 2026–2027 calendar, with its strongest activity usually around August 12 or 13. NASA’s Perseids overview describes meteors entering Earth’s atmosphere at about 59 km/s (37 miles per second). NASA Science: Perseids Meteor Shower

What causes the Perseid meteor shower?
Earth crosses a trail of debris associated with comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle each year. Small particles collide with the atmosphere and heat up, creating the brief streaks of light we call meteors. The comet itself is not passing overhead during the annual shower: NASA gives its orbital period as 133 years and its nucleus diameter as 26 km. NASA also credits astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli with identifying Swift-Tuttle as the Perseids’ source in 1865.

Why are they called the Perseids?
The name comes from Perseus, the constellation where the meteors’ apparent radiant lies—the direction from which they seem to arrive. Perseus is a useful guide, not the physical source of the particles. A meteor can streak across almost any part of the sky, so do not stare only at the constellation. NASA Science and the NASA observing guide both explain the radiant and broad-sky viewing.
When is the next Perseids peak?
The American Meteor Society lists August 12–13, 2027 as the next peak. Its calendar says the Moon will be 79% illuminated and expects significant interference while the Moon is above the horizon, so 2027 should not be described as an ideal moonless peak. The shower remains active beyond the peak dates, meaning a night near the maximum is not the only opportunity. American Meteor Society 2026/2027 Meteor Shower Calendar

For context, NASA’s guide for 2026 forecast the peak on the night of August 12 into August 13 under a new Moon. That was the 2026 forecast, not the outlook for 2027. Meteor activity also varies from year to year; although the International Meteor Organization records enhanced activity after the main peak in 2018, 2020, and 2021, it does not establish a similar burst forecast for 2027. | 30–50 per hour at maximum | American Meteor Society’s typical rate for shower members from rural locations in a normal year. Source |
| 50–100 per hour | NASA’s range when conditions are right. Source |

Your actual count can be much lower. Moonlight, clouds, artificial light, latitude, the radiant’s height above the horizon, and the length of your observing session all affect what you see. The 2027 Moon forecast is an especially important limitation for planning that year’s peak.

- Choose a dark, clear location. Get away from bright lights if practical, check the local forecast, and find a broad, unobstructed view of the sky.
- Plan for a late session. NASA says Perseids can appear as early as about 10 p.m., but in the Northern Hemisphere the hours before dawn are generally more favorable because the radiant rises higher later in the night.
- Look broadly with your naked eyes. You do not need binoculars or a telescope. Recline or lie flat so you can take in more of the sky, and watch the wider area rather than fixing your gaze on Perseus.
- Give your eyes and yourself time. Let your eyes adapt to the dark; bring warm layers and water, and be ready to wait. A reclining camping chair can make a long session more comfortable, but no special purchase is needed.
- Consider a group event. A local astronomy club or public observing event can offer company and help with sky orientation; check the organizer’s details before you go.
Geography matters: the International Meteor Organization says mid-northern latitudes are favorable, while most of the Southern Hemisphere and locations north of about 60°N cannot properly view the shower. Conditions vary by site, so use a local sky guide for precise expectations. IMO Meteor Shower Calendar 2026 NASA: Prepare for Perseids!
