One surname dictionary traces Everleigh to a lost place called Eveleigh in Broad Clyst, Devon, interpreting the place-name as the Old English personal name Ifa plus lēah, meaning “woodland clearing.” That is a surname-origin explanation, not proof that everyone named Everleigh shares one ancestor. A separate, uncertain account concerns the village of Everleigh in Wiltshire and should not be treated as the same explanation.
What does the surname Everleigh mean?
FamilySearch reproduces an explanation from the Dictionary of American Family Names (Patrick Hanks, 2003, 2006): Everleigh is an English habitational surname associated with a lost place called Eveleigh in Broad Clyst, Devon. The place-name is analyzed as Ifa, an Old English personal name, combined with lēah, “woodland clearing.” In this account, the surname refers to a place-name; it does not establish a pedigree for any particular bearer. FamilySearch’s Everleigh name page gives the attributed explanation.
Is the Wiltshire village of Everleigh the same origin?
Not on the evidence available. A local history of the Wiltshire village discusses a possible 704 form, “Eburleagh,” and an interpretation meaning “wood or clearing of the wild boar.” The account itself cautions that the charter may not be genuine and that the place may have been misidentified. The proposed form and meaning therefore remain uncertain, and they do not resolve or replace the Devon derivation given by the surname dictionary. See the village’s history of Everleigh.

Does Everleigh have one origin or a known earliest bearer?
The sources cited here do not establish that all people with the surname descend from one family, identify the earliest bearer of the exact spelling Everleigh, or provide a complete chronology of its spelling variants. A place-name explanation describes how a surname may have arisen; it cannot by itself show which place or family line an individual’s ancestors belonged to.
How can you research your own Everleigh family line?
Start with a known relative and work backward using records that connect people to dates, places, and relationships. FamilySearch points to collections that include census, passenger, and military records, as well as birth and death records. Compare details across records rather than treating a shared surname or its proposed meaning as proof of kinship.
- Write down what you know about a recent ancestor, including names, approximate dates, and places.
- Look for records tied to that person and compare dates, locations, and family relationships across each record.
- Use each documented connection to identify the next ancestor to investigate; note spelling differences without assuming they prove a connection.
Which surname references may help?
The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland is described as covering surname origins, variant spellings, early bearers, geographical distribution, and genealogical notes. The library description and catalog record establish the reference’s scope and give its publication date as 17 November 2016, but neither confirms that the book contains an entry for Everleigh. Its geographic scope also differs from the Dictionary of American Family Names explanation relayed by FamilySearch. See the Manchester City Council reference description and the OCLC/YourCloudLibrary catalog record.
