A fan-made browser project has put Halo: Combat Evolved back in the conversation, but the evidence points to a burst of attention—not a proven, sustained renaissance. The developer said the project recorded almost 20,000 games across 115 countries in five hours, according to PC Gamer’s report. That is a striking early figure, but it counts games, not confirmed unique players. And “no thanks to Microsoft” misses the company’s official mod tools, Steam Workshop support for The Master Chief Collection, and its separate 2026 remake of the original campaign.
What sparked the renewed attention?
A developer created a browser-playable build of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved, commonly called Halo CE. PC Gamer reported the project’s early usage claim: almost 20,000 games across 115 countries in five hours, as stated by the developer. The figure describes games played during a short period; it does not establish how many distinct people participated or whether activity continued at that level.
The browser project’s multiplayer was described as link-based room creation with peer-to-peer hosting and no matchmaking. The developer’s post said “up to 128 players (untested),” so that number should not be treated as a verified working capacity. The project is a fan effort, not an authorized Microsoft release. Its availability and functionality may change: PC Gamer reported that traffic from X briefly took the site down after it was apparently flagged for suspected phishing, before it returned. PC Gamer’s report has the account of the project and its early reception.
Does this prove Halo CE is having a renaissance?
Not on its own. The reported five-hour tally captures a viral burst, not a long-term trend in the game’s overall audience. A popular link can draw curiosity and short-lived visits without showing that the original release has regained a large, sustained player base. No independent player-count series establishes a broader comeback.

There is evidence of ongoing community content: the Steam Workshop for The Master Chief Collection includes Halo 1-tagged campaign and multiplayer entries. That shows a catalog of mods exists; it is not a measure of how many people are playing Halo CE or proof of a general resurgence. The live MCC Workshop catalog can be browsed directly.
What does Microsoft support for Halo CE mods?
Microsoft does provide official mod infrastructure for The Master Chief Collection (MCC), even though the browser project is independent of it. Halo Support documents Steam Workshop access for maps, gameplay tweaks, and custom campaigns. Its instructions say to launch MCC with Easy Anti-Cheat disabled when playing mods. Consult Halo Support’s MCC Workshop instructions for the steps.

Microsoft also makes Halo: CE mod tools available through Steam, regardless of which MCC titles a player owns. Microsoft labels the tools “provided as-is” and warns that future MCC updates may require maps to be rebuilt. That is official tooling, but it does not show that Microsoft created, endorsed, or contributed to the browser project. The tool details are on Microsoft Learn’s MCC and Halo CE mod tools overview.
How do the browser project, MCC, and Campaign Evolved differ?
They are three distinct ways of engaging with Halo CE’s legacy, not interchangeable versions of the same release.

Campaign Evolved is a modern remake, not a browser port or a re-release of the 2001 game. Xbox Wire says it is rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, with new visuals, updated animation, remastered music, re-recorded dialogue, and three additional prequel missions. Its co-op options also differ: two players can play local split screen on console, while online co-op supports up to four players across Xbox, PC, and PS5.

Halo Studios executive producer Damon Conn described the intent as returning to the source: “We wanted to start where it all began, with the original campaign that defined Halo,” Conn explains. He also said, “Focusing on the campaign experience means we can concentrate fully on really capturing the atmosphere, tone – the emotional impact of what made the first campaign so special and iconic.” Both statements appear in Xbox Wire’s interview.

Which version should you choose?
- For a quick browser experiment: the fan project is the option described in PC Gamer’s report, but treat its availability as temporary and its multiplayer claims cautiously.
