The Order: 1886 has no official native Windows release. Sony released it as a PlayStation 4 single-player game. In 2026, experimental shadPS4 emulation can run the game on some PCs, sometimes above 30 frames per second, but results vary by hardware and emulator build. Shader-compilation stutter, visual glitches, and rendering artifacts remain part of the experience.

PS4 is therefore the reliable, supported way to play the game as designed: a letterboxed, film-inspired presentation targeting 30 FPS. PC emulation can offer higher frame rates, adjustable output resolutions, and modern display flexibility, but only if you accept unofficial software, configuration work, and inconsistent compatibility.

The short answer: PS4 is the dependable version, PC is an experimental alternative

If you are deciding where to play The Order: 1886, the choice is less like a normal console-versus-PC comparison and more like a supported release versus an evolving emulation project.

  • Choose PS4 for the intended 30-FPS cinematic presentation, predictable behavior, DualShock 4 features, and Remote Play.
  • Choose PC emulation only if you already have a capable PC, a legally obtained game dump, and the patience to troubleshoot shadPS4 compatibility. You may obtain frame rates above 30 FPS and experiment with modern displays, but no standardized PC benchmark or guaranteed performance level exists.
  • Do not buy the game expecting a native PC port. Sony’s product and store information identify the game as a PS4 title and do not list a Windows edition.

The practical verdict is simple: PS4 provides the complete, supported experience; PC emulation is interesting for enthusiasts but is not a finished replacement for the console version.

What was officially released?

The Order: 1886 is a PlayStation 4 game

Ready at Dawn developed The Order: 1886 for Sony’s PlayStation 4. Its setting is a re-imagined Neo-Victorian London in which scientific progress, political unrest, and mythological enemies collide. The campaign is a single-player action game built around a tightly directed story rather than an open-ended multiplayer service.

Sony’s product description emphasizes a “Filmic vision,” saying the game reproduces the nuances of real motion-picture cameras and lenses. That objective affects the entire presentation: the image is letterboxed, camera movement is staged like a film, and story scenes flow directly into playable action. Sony also promotes full performance capture and seamless transitions between narrative and combat.

There is no documented native Windows edition

No publisher-supported Windows version is listed in the Sony materials associated with the game. That means there is no official PC executable with PC-specific graphics settings, a Windows support policy, or published minimum and recommended requirements. A copy intended for PS4 cannot be treated as a conventional PC game simply because an emulator may be able to launch it.

Current PC play is associated with shadPS4, an experimental PlayStation 4 emulator. Compatibility changes as emulator builds improve, and two systems with the same graphics card can behave differently because of drivers, CPU performance, emulator revisions, shader caches, and game-specific fixes.

Graphics: why the PS4 version still looks distinctive

Filmic framing is a design choice, not a defect

The Order: 1886 was designed to look like a film. Sony describes the camera model as replicating the nuances of actual motion-picture cameras and lenses. The game uses a wide, letterboxed frame instead of filling every vertical pixel of a conventional 16:9 television. That reduces the visible image height, but it is intentional: the developers wanted a particular aspect ratio, composition, and sense of lens behavior.

The same philosophy explains why the game can feel unusually controlled compared with a typical shooter. Camera placement, transitions, and scene timing are built around a directed cinematic experience. Letterboxing is therefore part of the visual identity. Removing or cropping it through unofficial modifications would change the composition rather than simply improving image quality.

Materials, lighting, and post-processing

A later Digital Foundry retrospective identified image quality, physically based rendering, lighting, and post-processing as major technical strengths. Physically based materials help metals, leather, stone, glass, and cloth react to light in a consistent way. Carefully authored lighting gives interiors and streets a dense, atmospheric appearance, while post-processing supplies depth-of-field, motion, lens, and color effects that reinforce the period-film aesthetic.

Digital Foundry characterized the 2015 release as visually cutting-edge for the PS4 generation. That assessment matters when comparing it with emulation: a higher PC resolution or frame rate does not automatically reproduce every effect correctly. If an emulator has an unresolved rendering issue, a scene can look worse despite running at a higher measured frame rate.

Resolution and letterboxing

Resolution figures need context because different analyses describe different stages of the game. A Digital Foundry launch analysis, as summarized in contemporary discussion, identified an earlier build rendering at 1920×800 with letterboxing. Third-party compatibility data records 1080p-class output, 30 FPS, and letterboxing for PS4 and PS4 Pro. That database is useful corroboration, but it is not an official Sony specification.

The safest description of the retail experience is therefore “1080p-class PS4 output with a letterboxed presentation,” not a promise that every scene is rendered at a fixed full-frame 1920×1080. The visible picture is intentionally shorter than a full 16:9 frame because the game preserves its cinematic aspect ratio.

Performance: 30 FPS on PS4 versus variable PC emulation

Why the PS4 target is 30 FPS

Ready at Dawn’s frame-rate rationale was reported contemporaneously: the game would run at 30 frames per second because 24 FPS “doesn’t feel good.” The goal was to retain a film-like cadence without making aiming and movement feel as uncomfortable as a literal 24-FPS presentation.

Digital Foundry’s launch analysis described the retail game as staying near its 30-FPS target for most of the experience. The most visible drops were associated with cuts and transitions rather than a permanently unstable frame rate. This is a console-style design target, not a guarantee that every frame arrives at exactly 33.3-millisecond intervals.

On a standard PS4, the 30-FPS behavior is part of the authored experience. The game’s camera work, animation timing, effects, and streaming budget were selected for fixed console hardware. You do not need to choose a graphics preset, compile shaders, or investigate a driver issue before starting a chapter.

What PC emulation can change

Reports from current shadPS4 testing show the game running above 30 FPS on capable PCs. Those numbers come from particular systems and emulator builds, so they are not a benchmark that can be applied to every desktop or laptop. A faster processor, a modern graphics card, and a high-refresh monitor may provide smoother camera movement, but the result remains dependent on emulator maturity.

Shader compilation is a central source of unevenness. As the emulator encounters effects for the first time, it may compile shaders during play, producing pauses or hitching that are not present in the fixed PS4 experience. Later runs can improve if a shader cache is retained, but cache behavior varies by build and configuration.

Visual glitches and artifacts are also reported. These can include incorrect effects, broken geometry, missing or improperly blended surfaces, or image corruption in particular scenes. Increasing the output resolution does not fix an emulation bug; it can make the defect more conspicuous and increase the host system’s workload.

Why there is no meaningful universal PC FPS figure

No publisher-owned, standardized PC-versus-PS4 benchmark has been established. The available PC figures are emulator-specific observations, not a controlled test performed across a defined CPU, GPU, driver, and build matrix. Treat any claim such as “the game runs at a fixed 60 FPS on PC” as a report about one configuration, not a specification for the platform.

Features and controls

Single-player structure

Sony lists The Order: 1886 as a single-player action experience. No official multiplayer mode is listed, so emulation does not leave you missing a separate online component. The campaign’s value is in its story pacing, set pieces, investigation, and gunplay rather than a competitive or cooperative player population.

Weapons and gadgets

The arsenal includes distinctive devices such as the Arc Gun and Thermite Rifle, while the Monocular supports investigation and observation. These tools are integrated into the campaign’s encounters and narrative sequences rather than presented as a broad multiplayer loadout system.

Performance capture and transitions

Full performance capture gives characters facial and body movement designed for close-up cinematic scenes. Sony also highlights seamless transitions between story and action. The game can move from a captured scene into playable combat without a conventional hard cut, which is one reason its streaming and camera systems were demanding for the PS4 hardware of its era.

DualShock 4 and Remote Play

The PS4 product listing includes DualShock 4 vibration and Remote Play. Vibration can communicate weapon discharge, impacts, and environmental events through the supported controller. Remote Play allows the PS4 experience to be streamed to a compatible device within the PlayStation ecosystem, subject to the system and network requirements in force for that feature.

On PC, an emulator can map a compatible controller, but that is not the same as reproducing every console feature. Button prompts, vibration behavior, motion or touch functions, and connection stability depend on the emulator’s input layer and the controller you configure.

PS4 Pro and PS5: what is and is not documented

PS4 Pro

The Order: 1886 never received a dedicated PS4 Pro enhancement, according to Digital Foundry’s retrospective. Third-party compatibility records likewise describe PS4 and PS4 Pro output in the same 1080p-class, 30-FPS, letterboxed terms. You should not expect a Pro-specific resolution mode, higher frame-rate mode, or enhanced texture package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PS4 Pro can still be relevant as hardware on which to run the PS4 software, but its existence does not turn the game into a Pro-enhanced release. The game remains designed around the original PS4-era presentation.

PS5

The cited Sony product and store information identifies the game as a PS4 title and does not document a native PS5 edition or a PS5-specific upgrade. The available evidence therefore does not establish a separate PS5 version with new resolution, frame-rate, or graphics modes. Playing on PC through shadPS4

Because there is no native Windows release, PC play requires an emulator. The following workflow describes the practical considerations without treating emulation as an officially supported product. Interface names and behavior can change between shadPS4 builds.

What you need

  • A PC with enough CPU and GPU headroom for experimental PlayStation 4 emulation. No official minimum or recommended specification is published for this game, so a particular graphics card cannot be guaranteed to work.
  • A legally obtained copy or dump of the PS4 game and any firmware or system files required by the emulator. Laws governing personal backups, decryption, and emulator use differ by jurisdiction; verify the rules where you live.
  • A current shadPS4 build from a legitimate distribution source, plus graphics drivers that support the emulator’s requirements.
  • Storage for the game data and shader cache. Keeping the cache can reduce repeated compilation pauses, although it cannot eliminate every hitch.
  • A controller or keyboard configuration you can map comfortably. A DualShock 4 is not required for basic input, but its console-specific behavior may not be reproduced perfectly.

General setup sequence

  1. Install the emulator. Use a current build and read its release notes for operating-system, driver, and firmware requirements. Experimental projects can change configuration formats, so avoid copying settings blindly from an older guide.
  2. Prepare your own game dump. Point the emulator at the legally acquired game data or install package using the build’s game-directory or package-install function. Do not download someone else’s copyrighted dump.
  3. Install required firmware files. If the build requests PS4 system software components, supply files obtained through a lawful method recognized in your jurisdiction. The emulator may refuse to boot without them.
  4. Configure graphics conservatively. Start at the emulator’s default resolution and synchronization settings. Confirm that the game renders correctly before raising resolution or enabling experimental options.
  5. Map a controller. Test every face button, trigger, stick, pause function, and vibration option. Save a separate profile for this game so another title’s mapping does not overwrite it.
  6. Run the opening areas and allow shaders to compile. Early traversal can stutter while shaders are generated. Keep the emulator open long enough to determine whether the pauses are one-time compilation events or persistent frame-time problems.
  7. Change one setting at a time. If you increase resolution, alter synchronization, or switch renderers, test the same scene again. This makes it possible to identify which change caused a glitch or performance loss.

Common PC problems and practical responses

Symptom Likely explanation What to try
Short pauses when entering a new area Shader compilation or cache creation Play through the area once, keep the shader cache, and avoid deleting it between sessions unless it is corrupted.
Persistent stutter after shaders have compiled CPU/GPU limits, synchronization settings, or an emulator regression Return to default resolution, test another synchronization mode, update or roll back to a known-working emulator build, and compare frame-time behavior rather than only the FPS counter.
Missing effects, incorrect lighting, or visual artifacts Incomplete graphics emulation for a particular scene or renderer Disable experimental enhancements, try the build’s alternative renderer if available, and report the reproducible issue to the emulator project with your hardware and build details.
Game does not boot Incorrect dump structure, missing firmware, unsupported build, or a damaged file Verify the dump, confirm the firmware requirement, check the emulator’s compatibility notes, and test without custom patches.
Controller buttons do not match prompts Incorrect input profile or a different controller layout Reset the game profile, map buttons manually, and check that the emulator is not applying a second operating-system-level remap.
Higher resolution causes crashes or severe slowdown Extra GPU load or an unstable scaling path Return to native or default output, confirm stability, then increase resolution gradually rather than enabling several enhancements together.

Access, convenience, and cost considerations

The PS4 route requires two basic pieces: the game and PS4 hardware. A physical or digital copy may be available through used or existing collections, but current prices, seller condition, and regional availability change over time. No fixed price should be treated as universal.

PC emulation may avoid buying a second console if you already own a suitable computer, but it replaces console simplicity with setup work. You must source and prepare the game legally, manage firmware and emulator files, test drivers, configure controls, and accept that a future emulator update can improve one scene while breaking another. A high-refresh monitor is useful only if your particular configuration can sustain the higher frame rate without shader hitching or visual errors.

There is also a convenience trade-off in troubleshooting. On PS4, a problem is usually addressed through standard system updates, disc checks, storage checks, or reinstalling the official game. On PC, the same symptom can originate in the game dump, firmware, emulator revision, graphics driver, shader cache, operating-system overlay, controller layer, or a custom setting.

Which version should you choose?

Choose PS4 when reliability matters

  • You want to start the campaign without configuring an emulator.
  • You prefer the presentation the developers designed around a fixed console target.
  • You want the listed DualShock 4 vibration and Remote Play features.
  • You do not want to diagnose shader stutter or scene-specific rendering errors.
  • You are buying specifically for the story and cinematic direction rather than for frame-rate experimentation.

Choose PC emulation when experimentation is the point

  • You already have a capable PC and are comfortable testing unofficial software.
  • You value the possibility of frame rates above 30 FPS or flexible scaling on a modern display.
  • You can legally create or obtain the required game dump and firmware files in your jurisdiction.
  • You are willing to keep separate emulator profiles, preserve shader caches, and change settings methodically.
  • You understand that a faster result on one system does not establish a guaranteed result on yours.

What the PC version cannot promise

It cannot promise a polished native port, official technical support, a fixed 60-FPS mode, complete visual correctness, or a universal list of compatible graphics cards. It also cannot add multiplayer, a PS4 Pro upgrade, or a PS5-specific graphics mode that the original release did not provide.

Conversely, the lack of an official port does not mean every PC attempt is unusable. Experimental emulation can already make the game playable on some capable systems and can expose options unavailable on the original console. The right expectation is “a changing compatibility project,” not “the definitive PC edition.”

Bottom line

The Order: 1886 remains a PS4-first game. Its strongest qualities—physically based materials, lighting, post-processing, performance capture, and a deliberately filmic letterboxed image—were built around a supported 30-FPS console experience. Experimental shadPS4 emulation can provide higher frame rates and modern display flexibility, but shader compilation, glitches, artifacts, and system-to-system variation prevent it from being a dependable replacement. For a straightforward playthrough, use PS4; for technical experimentation, PC emulation is the optional path.
