It was probably olive loaf: a bologna-like deli meat with green olives and pimentos tucked into each slice. A 2025 Chowhound feature says it had become a standard deli-counter option by the 1970s, though that recollection is not backed by national sales or consumption figures.
What is olive loaf?
Olive loaf is a cooked, sliced deli meat with pieces of olive—often pimento-stuffed green olives—visible throughout. Its smooth, bologna-like base makes the colorful slices easy to recognize. The olives and pimentos are the defining visual difference from ordinary bologna.
Recipes vary. Chowhound describes a typical version as finely ground beef and pork baked with whole stuffed olives and seasonings, but that is not a universal ingredient formula. Check the package for the ingredients in a specific product.

Why is it associated with the 1970s?
Food writer Andrew Amelinckx reports that olive loaf had become a standard deli meat by the 1970s, a familiar option that some children welcomed and others did not. A separate Foodie article also places it among Oscar Mayer’s deli meats of that decade and describes a version made with pimento-stuffed olives. These are retrospective food-history accounts, not evidence that every household—or even a measured share of households—ate it.

The available accounts do not establish how widespread olive loaf was nationally in the 1970s or quantify a later decline in popularity. The association is best understood as a period memory of a deli-counter staple, not a claim about how often Americans bought it.
How does it compare with bologna and mortadella?
- Bologna: Olive loaf has a similar loaf-like, finely textured look, but its olive pieces and pimentos are conspicuous in the slice.
- Mortadella: Both are loaf-style sliced meats. Broad descriptions distinguish olive loaf by its olives, while mortadella is often associated with pork and inclusions such as pistachios or cubes of fat. Recipes differ, so these are general cues rather than rules for every product.
How far back does olive loaf go?
Amelinckx traces olive loaf to American loaf-meat traditions associated with Dutch and German settlers. He reports that the earliest reference he found was a 1936 Houston Post advertisement for Texas grocer Weingarten’s. That is the author’s reported discovery, not a verified origin date or proof of who invented the food.

Can you still find olive loaf?
Chowhound names Boar’s Head, Oscar Mayer, and Dietz & Watson as companies that still produce olive loaf. That indicates the meat has not disappeared, but it does not guarantee that a particular shop carries it. Ask a deli counter whether it can be ordered or check the packaged-meat section.

What should you know about its nutrition?
Chowhound reports that Boar’s Head olive loaf has 17% of the Daily Value for saturated fat and 26% for sodium. The passage does not specify the serving size or the date of the underlying label, and those figures should not be applied to other brands or recipes. For a product-specific comparison, use the serving size and nutrition facts on the package you are buying.
