New Jersey’s trading hub is a connected infrastructure cluster—not one exchange building. Facilities and network links in Carteret, Secaucus, and Mahwah help firms reach exchange systems, market-data feeds, and order-entry services. You do not need to be located there—or colocated at an exchange—to trade.

What the New Jersey trading hub is

Electronic markets depend on more than the exchange that matches orders. They also rely on data centers that house computing equipment, feeds that distribute prices and other market information, and network connections that carry data and orders between firms and venues.

In New Jersey, those layers meet across several locations. Nasdaq identifies Carteret as the location of its primary data center and lists points of presence (POPs) in Secaucus and Mahwah. ICE describes a colocation facility in Mahwah and network routes connecting it with Carteret and Secaucus. These examples show a concentrated cluster, not a complete inventory of every financial facility in the state. Nasdaq’s POP information; ICE colocation

What each location does

Location Documented role What that does not establish
Carteret Nasdaq names Equinix NY11 in Carteret as its primary data center. Nasdaq also says it is building cloud-enabled capital-markets infrastructure there with Equinix and AWS. Nasdaq This does not mean Carteret is the only financial data center in New Jersey or that every venue’s matching system is there.
Secaucus Nasdaq lists a POP at Equinix NY4. A POP is a network connection point through which customers can access Nasdaq market data and order entry. Nasdaq Nasdaq identifies Carteret—not Secaucus—as its primary data center on that page.
Mahwah ICE describes its US Liquidity Center as a colocation facility connected to NYSE systems and National Market System (NMS) feeds, with cross-connects and optical connectivity toward Secaucus and Carteret. Nasdaq also lists a POP in Mahwah. ICE; Nasdaq Availability of a venue’s data or connectivity at a site does not prove that the venue’s matching engine is located there.

How data, orders, and connections fit together

  1. A venue operates a market. Exchanges and other trading venues run systems that process orders and publish market data.
  2. A firm connects its systems. A trading firm may place computing equipment in a data center or connect from elsewhere. Colocation puts equipment in a facility close to relevant market infrastructure; it is an option, not a prerequisite for participating in a market.
  3. Networks carry orders and feeds. Cross-connects, fiber, optical circuits, or wireless routes provide paths between facilities and market services. Nasdaq describes its POPs as redundant fiber handoffs for market-data access and order entry. ICE describes connections from Mahwah toward Carteret and Secaucus. Nasdaq POPs; ICE Colocation
  4. Firms use the services in their workflows. Market data can inform pricing and trading decisions; order-entry connections let firms submit orders; firms also use their systems for execution and risk processes.

A data feed is the information service; a POP or cross-connect is part of the route used to reach a service. Neither term, by itself, identifies where an exchange’s matching engine sits.

Why proximity and latency matter

Network distance and the number and nature of connections can affect how quickly data and orders travel. ICE describes its New Jersey Metro routes as “ultra-low latency,” while Equinix says private interconnection can reduce network hops and improve determinism. These are provider descriptions of their services, not independent measurements of the latency a particular trading firm will achieve. Actual performance depends on the route, equipment, configuration, and endpoints involved. ICE New Jersey Metro; Equinix capital-markets infrastructure

ICE specifies 5 Gb/s radio channels for its described Mahwah–Secaucus wireless route, which uses millimeter wave and free-space optics. That is a service specification for that route, not a general measure of the hub’s speed or latency; the page does not state a publication year. ICE New Jersey Metro

Which markets and feeds are involved?

ICE’s New Jersey Metro service lists data for NYSE markets, Cboe, Nasdaq, MEMX, and MIAX. This describes the feeds available through the service; it does not show that every named venue operates its primary matching system in New Jersey. ICE New Jersey Metro

The distinction matters: a firm may connect to a feed or venue through infrastructure in the region without that venue’s core market system being in the same facility. For background on NYSE’s equities markets, see NYSE Equities.

Do traders need to be in New Jersey?

No. NYSE explicitly says colocation at its Mahwah liquidity center is not required to trade on NYSE markets. Colocation is an infrastructure choice for firms that want equipment housed near relevant systems; firms can participate through other connectivity arrangements. NYSE Data Center Colocation Services

How firms evaluate connectivity options

There is no single best facility or route for every firm. The relevant choice depends on the markets and feeds a firm needs, its technical design, and the operational trade-offs it can support. Useful comparison points include:

  • Distance to the relevant systems: assess the path to the specific exchange, feed, or service—not just the facility’s location on a map.
  • Connection type and redundancy: compare available cross-connects, fiber, optical or wireless paths, and documented failover arrangements.
  • Services available: check that the required market-data feeds and order-entry connections are offered at the chosen site.
  • Facility requirements: review power, resilience, equipment options, and operational access with the provider.
  • Cost and operating burden: account for facility, connectivity, equipment, and staffing needs. The cited service pages do not provide enough comparable pricing or independent reliability data to rank providers.

What the hub’s footprint does—and does not—prove

The operator descriptions establish a network of facilities and connectivity options, but they do not establish New Jersey’s share of trading, a statewide latency advantage, job totals, or economic impact. Those claims require separate, dated evidence. Nor does a scoped infrastructure announcement necessarily describe every current production system.

For example, ICE’s datacenter migration notice describes a project to move disaster-recovery systems for specified ICE trading, clearing, and fixed-income platforms from Atlanta to Mahwah. It says no changes were planned for NYSE Systems or ICE Data Services Systems. The notice is a scoped migration description, not a complete current inventory of production systems.
