A digital-wellness product that succeeds by helping people need it less runs against the metrics most product teams are built around. The evidence supports a narrower claim than the slogan. Engagement-maximizing design and wellbeing goals can pull in different directions, and how people leave a product matters as much as how long they stay. The evidence does not yet show that a product with a built-in ending earns more money or always improves wellbeing. That business question is still open.
What the evidence says in brief
- Wellbeing features are not the same as abstinence. A 2019 CHI agenda paper by Marta E. Cecchinato, John Rooksby, Alexis Hiniker, Sean Munson, Kai Lukoff, Luigina Ciolfi, Anja Thieme, and Daniel Harrison argues that digital wellbeing features are arguably preferable to abstinence, because digital technologies are valuable in many people’s lives.
- Engagement and wellbeing are in tension. The same agenda notes that consumer technologies have traditionally been designed to maximize engagement, while wellbeing features such as managing time spent and encouraging breaks are a newer addition.
- How people use a product may matter alongside how much. A 2026 study in Scientific Reports found associations, not proof of cause, between intentional use and better attentional control and wellbeing.
- Leaving an app is common, and its meaning varies. A 2025 scoping review in the Journal of Medical Internet Research found a median of 70% discontinuation within 100 days.
- The business case is not established. No source reviewed here shows how purposeful completion affects revenue, referrals, renewals, willingness to pay, or support costs.
Engagement design versus wellbeing goals
The CHI 2019 agenda frames the problem as a design question. Many consumer technologies were built to keep people using them, and the features added to address overuse, such as time-management tools and break prompts, often sit on top of that engagement logic rather than replacing it. The authors’ central point is that a product can be valuable and still be used in a way that does not serve the person. The practical implication is that a wellbeing feature is not automatically a wellbeing outcome. A reminder that a user dismisses every time has little effect, and a limit that can be disabled in one tap is a weaker design than one that requires a deliberate choice.
Use quality may matter alongside quantity
Screen time is the metric most digital-wellness products report, and it is the easiest to measure. A 2026 cross-sectional study by Wang, Xu, and He, published in Scientific Reports on March 4, 2026, asks whether the kind of use matters too. The study drew on 842 adults ages 18 to 65 and used structural equation modeling across social media, entertainment, information seeking, and communication.

The authors report that intentional use was positively associated with attentional control (β = 0.42, p < .001) and psychological wellbeing (β = 0.37, p < .001). Passive use was negatively associated with both (β = −0.39 and β = −0.31, respectively; both p < .001). These associations remained significant after controlling for overall screen time.

Three limits apply. The design is cross-sectional, so it cannot show that intentional use causes better outcomes. The authors state that the study was not preregistered: “findings should therefore be interpreted as hypothesis-generating rather than confirmatory.” And the betas describe statistical associations in this sample; they are not percentage changes or predicted effects for an individual user.
For product design, the implication is a question to test rather than a rule to adopt. Does a product distinguish a deliberate session from an open-ended scroll? If it does, can it show whether the first kind leads to the goal the user came for?
Discontinuation is common, but it does not mean success
A 2025 scoping review in the Journal of Medical Internet Research examined free-living use of apps for physical activity, diet, alcohol, smoking, and mental health. It included 18 eligible studies with 525,824 participants, published between 2014 and 2022, mostly from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The review found a curvilinear pattern. Many users stopped soon after they acquired an app, and the rate of stopping slowed among those who remained. The median discontinuation was 70% within the first 100 days. That figure is a pooled median across heterogeneous studies, not a current industry benchmark.
Discontinuation is therefore a weak signal on its own. A person who stops using a meditation app after reaching a goal and a person who stops because the app crashed have both discontinued, and the outcomes are different. The review does not classify any of these exits as good or bad, and that distinction has to come from the product’s own evidence.
Domain figures, with their limits
The review also reports abandonment by category. The figures below come from few studies and different methods, so they indicate direction, not a forecast for today’s apps.

Why people stop using a product
The review grouped 22 reported reasons into six categories. Each one points to a different fix, which is why a single “retention” metric hides more than it shows.
- Technical and functional problems: bugs, sync failures, and features that do not work as described.
- Privacy concerns: worry about what data is collected or shared.
- Poor user experience: confusing navigation, excessive effort, or unpleasant interaction.
- Content and features: material that is repetitive, irrelevant, or missing what the user wanted.
- Time and financial costs: the effort required or the price, relative to perceived benefit.
- Evolving user needs and goals: the person’s situation changed, or the goal was met or dropped.
Only the last category describes an ending that might be healthy, and even there the review does not say that goal completion was the typical reason. The authors also call for longitudinal studies and consistent definitions of abandonment, which means the field does not yet agree on what counts as leaving.
Purposeful completion versus unwanted abandonment
The most useful distinction for product teams is between two kinds of exit. In purposeful completion, the user reaches an aim, such as finishing a course of sessions or no longer needing a habit tracker, and leaves with the outcome they wanted. In unwanted abandonment, the user leaves because the product broke, intruded, cost too much, or stopped serving them.

This distinction is an editorial inference from the evidence, not a finding any reviewed study tested. The discontinuation literature records exits and reasons, but it does not separate good endings from bad ones. A product that wants credit for helping people finish has to measure completion directly, and it has to avoid counting a frustrated user who gave up as a success.
A practical test is to ask whether the product can tell these exits apart. If a user cancels, can the product ask why, and does the answer feed into a goal-completion record or only a churn report?

Comparing digital-wellness products by screen time alone hides most of what matters. The following axes give a more useful frame. They synthesize the evidence and the editorial question; they are not a validated scoring system.

- User agency: does the user choose a goal, a limit, or a stopping point, or is the product’s default imposed?
- Session structure: does the product offer a natural stopping point, a reminder, friction, or a hard block? Each has different trade-offs. A hard block protects against overuse but can frustrate people who had a legitimate need.
- Meaning of nonuse: can the product distinguish goal completion from frustration, privacy concern, cost, technical failure, or unmet need?
- Evidence quality: are outcomes measured as screen time alone, reported wellbeing, goal completion, or longer-term behavior? Is the evidence correlational or causal?
- Business outcome: what product-specific evidence exists for willingness to pay, referrals, renewal, or reduced support costs? The sources reviewed here do not answer this axis.
What existing tools show about design categories
A 2023 mixed-method paper named iOS Screen Time, Android Digital Wellbeing, Forest, and Moment as examples of tools people use to monitor or regulate smartphone use. Its study used a student sample and emphasized motivation, temporal variability, person-specific needs, and device context. The paper establishes categories of tools. It does not establish what those tools currently do, how well they work, or how they compare.
A separate functionality review of digital-wellbeing apps found that most reviewed apps focus on limiting screen time. It distinguishes monitoring use, tracking use against set limits, and interventions that support limited use. Its design suggestions include moving beyond screen time, supporting meaningful use, and designing friction. It is a review of design patterns, not a current inventory of apps on any store.
The business case is still unproven
The most important open question is commercial. Do users and buyers reward a product for helping them finish, reduce their reliance on it, or leave? The sources reviewed here contain no product-level economics, no willingness-to-pay data, and no causal evidence that a finite-use model performs well over time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That gap means the claim “better products need an ending” should be treated as a strategic proposition to test. A team making that bet would need to gather its own evidence on at least these points:
- Whether users who reach a stated goal renew, refer others, or return later, compared with users who do not finish.
- Whether support tickets and refund requests fall when the product offers clear limits and a graceful exit.
- Whether revenue per user changes when the product is priced around outcomes or access instead of ongoing use.
- Whether the product’s wellbeing measure is independent of the company’s own marketing claims.
Until that data exists for a specific product, the most defensible statement is modest: products that let people stop are a reasonable design direction for wellbeing, and their commercial performance is still to be shown.
Digital wellbeing is not abstinence, and a product’s ending is not a finished argument. The next step is to measure what people leave with, not only how long they stayed.
