Raleigh recorded 185 fatal crashes and 905 serious-injury crashes from 2019 through 2023, but the city’s published safety materials do not rank the driver mistakes behind them. North Carolina’s 2024 statewide crash records most often listed failure to reduce speed, inattention, failure to yield, and improper lane changes as contributing circumstances. Those state figures offer useful safety context—not a Raleigh-specific ranking or proof that any one behavior caused a particular crash.
What are the most common causes of car accidents in Raleigh, NC?
The most precise answer is that a Raleigh-only ranking of driver mistakes is not available in the cited local materials. The City of Raleigh’s Safe Streets for All page reports 185 fatal crashes and 905 serious-injury crashes in the city from 2019 to 2023. Those are crash-severity totals, not counts assigned to specific driving behaviors. The city says its safety analysis will identify high-injury and high-risk areas. For context, North Carolina’s 2024 statewide crash table records these frequently noted circumstances. They should not be presented as Raleigh counts or as a definitive ranking of unique crashes.

| Inattention | 45,293 | Statewide circumstances recorded in 2024; the table also lists separate distraction categories. |
| Failure to yield right of way | 44,383 | Statewide circumstances recorded in 2024. |
| Improper lane change | 17,647 | Statewide circumstances recorded in 2024. |
Source for all four counts: North Carolina Department of Transportation / Division of Motor Vehicles, 2024 crash data. The table reports 535,695 contributing circumstances statewide, not necessarily 535,695 distinct crashes; it also lists “no contributing circumstances indicated” separately. A crash may have more than one recorded circumstance, so these figures cannot be added together to calculate a number or share of crashes.

Which driving mistakes appear in North Carolina crash records?
Not reducing speed for conditions
Failure to reduce speed was the most frequently recorded specific circumstance in the state’s 2024 table. It does not mean only driving above the posted limit. A driver can be going under that limit and still fail to slow sufficiently for traffic, a curve, rain, poor visibility, or another road condition. Higher speed leaves less time and distance to react, so ease off early when conditions change rather than waiting until braking is urgent. NCDOT information on speeding and speed-related safety
Inattention and distraction
Inattention is a broad category in the state table; electronic communication devices, other electronic devices, in-vehicle distractions, and external distractions are recorded separately. Avoid dividing attention between driving and a phone, navigation screen, food, or something out of reach. Set the route and audio before moving, and pull over safely if you need to adjust them.

The North Carolina Department of Insurance, citing NHTSA, reported that distracted driving was attributed to 3,208 deaths in the United States in 2024. That is a national figure, not a Raleigh or North Carolina count, and the department cautions that distracted-driving deaths may be undercounted. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said, “You might think glancing at your phone for a few seconds isn’t a big deal while driving, but those few seconds can lead to a lifetime of consequences.” North Carolina Department of Insurance, April 2, 2026

Failing to yield
Failure to yield can arise when turning left across oncoming traffic, entering a road from a driveway or side street, or approaching people crossing or biking. Before proceeding, check for cross traffic and for pedestrians and cyclists who may be harder to see or moving through the area. The statewide count does not identify a particular Raleigh intersection or maneuver as the city’s leading problem.

Improper lane changes and lane position
Improper lane changes are distinct from other lane-related entries in the state table, such as using an improper lane or disregarding road markings. Signal early, check mirrors and blind spots, and move only when there is adequate space. Avoid a last-second change near an exit, and scan for people walking or biking as well as vehicles when changing position.
Disregarding signals or signs, and following too closely
North Carolina’s table also records disregarded traffic signals, disregarded stop signs, and following too closely. Come to a full stop where required, obey signal indications, and leave enough following distance to respond if traffic brakes suddenly. These are statewide record categories; the cited sources do not establish their Raleigh-specific frequency.

Driving impaired
Raleigh’s Vision Zero information identifies distracted driving, intoxicated driving, and speeding among leading crash causes nationally. State records also include alcohol and drug involvement as contributing-circumstance categories, but those entries do not establish a Raleigh ranking or, by themselves, prove causation. Plan a sober ride before drinking or using impairing drugs, and do not drive while impaired. City of Raleigh Vision Zero
Why statewide crash counts do not establish Raleigh’s top causes
The figures describe different places, measures, and periods. Raleigh’s 2019–2023 totals count fatal and serious-injury crashes. North Carolina’s 2024 table counts recorded contributing circumstances in reported crashes statewide. A contributing circumstance is not necessarily the sole cause, and the state table is not a list of Raleigh crashes.
NCDOT says crash data begins with law-enforcement reports and enters the statewide DMV database; it also cautions that many crashes go unreported. The agency says statistics for a particular intersection or road segment can be requested for a specified time period. NCDOT crash data and location-specific requests A reliable Raleigh-only ranking would require analyzing those local records with the same definitions and time period; the cited city page does not publish that ranking.
How can you reduce your risk while driving in Raleigh?
- Match speed to conditions: Slow before curves, congestion, rain, or limited visibility, even when below the posted limit.
- Set up before you move: Choose navigation and audio while parked; keep your phone out of your hand and avoid reaching for items while driving.
- Yield deliberately: Check all directions before turning or entering traffic, and look for people walking and biking.
- Change lanes with room: Signal, check mirrors and blind spots, and wait rather than forcing a move near an exit.
- Respect signs and signals: Stop where required and allow space to react to sudden braking.
- Arrange a sober ride: Do not drive after alcohol or drugs that impair your ability.
These are practical precautions, not findings that a particular Raleigh intersection or behavior caused the city’s recorded crashes. Raleigh adopted its Comprehensive Safety Action Plan in April 2026, with a goal of reducing fatal and serious-injury crashes by 50 percent by 2040. That citywide effort addresses safety beyond any one driver’s choices. City of Raleigh Vision Zero and safety plan
