The original Minimal Phone launched on Indiegogo in 2024 with an early-bird pledge price of $350. It paired an E Ink touchscreen with a physical QWERTY keyboard and Android, aiming to make a smartphone feel less compelling for endless scrolling without giving up access to Android apps. What was the original Minimal Phone?
The original Minimal Phone was pitched as an Android handset built around two unusual choices: an E Ink display instead of a conventional color smartphone screen, and a physical QWERTY keyboard instead of relying entirely on a touchscreen. Its Indiegogo campaign called it the “first E-Ink QWERTY phone.” The company now describes its software as a customized Android platform.
The idea was not to turn the device into a basic phone with no apps. It was to keep Android access while making common phone interactions feel more deliberate. That distinction matters: the Minimal Phone is still a smartphone, not a dedicated e-reader or a phone that blocks social apps.
What did the $350 Indiegogo pledge include?
At campaign launch on March 5, 2024, IT之家 reported a $350 early-bird pledge price. That was a crowdfunding offer at launch; it should not be read as the phone’s current price or as a standard retail price.

IT之家’s launch coverage also listed these specifications for the original model:
- 3.5-inch E Ink touchscreen with a reported 300 PPI resolution density
- 4,000 mAh battery
- USB-C charging
- Wireless charging
- 8 MP front camera
These are launch-era reported specifications. Check the seller’s current listing and the specific configuration before relying on them for a purchase decision.
Does the E Ink screen make it a better phone for focus?
The product’s premise is visual friction: E Ink is less suited than a typical OLED or LCD phone display to fast-moving, colorful content, so browsing and video may feel less inviting. But the device still runs Android apps. It can reduce the appeal of some screen habits without preventing access to the apps themselves.

That trade-off has practical consequences. E Ink can feel comfortable for text-heavy use, but motion and refresh behavior are not equivalent to a conventional smartphone display. In WIRED’s May 14, 2025 review, Julian Chokkattu reported persistent screen ghosting. The review praised the phone for reducing his social-media use, but that is one reviewer’s experience—not evidence of a guaranteed result for every user or a measured health benefit.
What did the hands-on review find?
WIRED reviewer Julian Chokkattu gave the Minimal Phone a 6/10 in a review published May 14, 2025. He reported mostly smooth performance and access to Android apps, and said the phone helped reduce his social-media use. He also criticized the camera, described the build as plasticky, and found the screen ghosting difficult to tolerate.
The review listed two-day battery life among the phone’s positives, while also saying battery life fell short of his expectations. That is a reviewer’s reported experience, not a battery-life guarantee or standardized test result. His standfirst summed up the central compromise: “This e-paper Android phone has a physical keyboard and will successfully get you off social media, if you can survive screen ghosting and an awful camera.”
Keyboard, Android, and compatibility details
The company’s support information describes a full QWERTY keyboard and says its keyboard software can change the input language and remap keys, even though the physical legends remain QWERTY. That could help users who type in another language, but remapping software does not change the printed labels on the keys.

The company also lists IP54 protection and international frequency-band support. Neither point guarantees service with every carrier: supported bands and network compatibility vary by country, carrier, and plan. Confirm compatibility with both the company and your carrier for your exact region before ordering.
When will the Minimal Phone ship?
As of October 8, 2026, the company’s support page says shipping is underway for Indiegogo backers and website preorders. It also says new orders ship within 4–5 business days. Those are the company’s current statements, not independently verified fulfillment data or a guaranteed delivery date; shipping time after dispatch can also depend on destination and carrier.

Minimal Phone 2 is a separate successor, not another name for the original E Ink model. The company currently promotes Phone 2 with an OLED display and a QWERTY keyboard. A shopper comparing the two should avoid carrying over the original phone’s E Ink specifications, 2024 crowdfunding price, or shipment history to the successor.

The available coverage does not establish a complete controlled comparison between the generations. The clear distinction is the screen technology: the original model is the E Ink phone discussed here, while Phone 2 is marketed as an OLED QWERTY handset. Who should consider the original Minimal Phone?
The original model may suit someone who wants a physical keyboard, primarily reads or types on a phone, and is willing to trade a conventional display experience for E Ink’s more restrained presentation.
