Samsung Electronics’ preliminary third-quarter 2026 results came in below the consensus estimates cited by a market report, even as both sales and operating profit rose sharply from a year earlier. The gap appears to have weighed on memory and storage-related shares, but the figures are not Samsung’s final results—and one market reaction does not show that AI-memory demand has peaked.
What Samsung reported—and how it compared with expectations
On October 8, Samsung estimated consolidated third-quarter sales of KRW 195 trillion and operating profit of KRW 107.40 trillion. Those preliminary figures were below Visible Alpha estimates of KRW 205.26 trillion in sales and KRW 112.73 trillion in operating profit, as quoted in a Yahoo Finance report. The consensus figures here are the report’s attribution; they have not been independently verified against Visible Alpha.
The miss was relative to expectations, not a year-over-year decline. Samsung said preliminary sales and operating profit were sharply higher than the prior-year comparison, although the cited release and market report do not provide the prior-year amounts in the figures available here. Samsung’s Korean release describes the numbers as preliminary estimates issued before the accounts were closed for investor convenience, and says they are based on K-IFRS: Samsung’s October 8 preliminary-results notice.
Why memory shares reportedly fell
The Yahoo Finance report said Sandisk, SK hynix, and Seagate were recently down about 3%, while Micron was down about 2%. These are approximate moves reported at the time, not closing returns or a measure of each company’s full-day performance. The report’s indexed text is the basis for both the stock moves and the Visible Alpha comparison.

A plausible reading is that a result below a high bar prompted investors to reassess near-term expectations across memory and storage names. That interpretation fits the reported reaction, but the available figures do not establish that Samsung’s announcement alone caused each share move. Nor do they show that demand for AI memory has topped out.
Samsung’s previous outlook still pointed to strong server demand
In its July 30 second-quarter results, Samsung reported consolidated revenue of KRW 171.5 trillion and operating profit of KRW 89.5 trillion. It also said its Memory Business achieved record quarterly revenue and operating profit, with industry-wide price increases contributing to the performance.

Samsung said the Memory Business addressed AI demand despite limited capacity, focusing particularly on server products. Server sales made up a record share of its Memory Business sales mix. For the second half of 2026, management expected robust, server-centered demand and faster growth in server DRAM, enterprise SSDs (eSSDs), and high-bandwidth memory (HBM). It also anticipated some moderation in mobile and PC demand and said supply constraints would persist despite efforts to increase production. Why the preliminary figures are not the final word
The October 8 announcement gives consolidated headline estimates, not the final segment-level results. It does not, by itself, show how much of the quarter’s performance came from memory, or settle the outlook for individual products such as HBM and eSSDs. Samsung’s full Q3 earnings release and scheduled conference call were due on October 29, 2026, at 10 a.m. Korea Standard Time, according to its investor-relations calendar. The final release and call are the appropriate places to check for segment details and management’s updated commentary.

The key distinction is between a market repricing against expectations and evidence of a change in underlying demand. The reported miss and approximate share declines document the former; Samsung’s prior outlook described tight supply and strong server demand, while also flagging softer mobile and PC demand. The preliminary headline alone cannot resolve how those forces developed during Q3.
