Job hunting can feel exhausting because it combines repetitive work with uncertainty: you search, tailor applications, submit them, then wait without knowing when—or whether—you will hear back. The strain is not just about résumés or interview skills. Evidence from specific studies and employment programs documents stress, confidence loss, and practical barriers, though it does not show that every job seeker experiences them.

Why the work adds up

A job search is a chain of small tasks: finding suitable listings, checking requirements, adapting a résumé or application, completing forms, preparing for interviews, and tracking responses. Each application can require fresh effort, while many produce no clear feedback. That combination makes it difficult to see progress even when a person is working steadily.

There is no universal number of applications or hours that captures the workload. Roles, hiring practices, and a person’s circumstances differ, so a fixed target can mistake activity for progress and may not be realistic for everyone.

Waiting makes the process harder to read

Applicants often have little visibility into what happens after submission: whether an employer is reviewing applications, interviewing other candidates, or pausing a search. Greenhouse reported an average time-to-hire of 46 days based on its Q3 2024 data. That company-reported measure describes its data for that period; it is not a countdown for an individual application, and timelines vary by employer and role. Greenhouse’s time-to-hire data.

When there is no reliable timeline, silence can be hard to interpret. It may reflect a slow process rather than a judgment about a candidate, but applicants usually cannot know which explanation applies from silence alone.

The emotional strain is part of the experience

In Employ’s 2025 Job Seeker Nation Report, 66% of respondents said they felt burned out from searching for a new job. This is a survey finding from Employ’s respondents, not an estimate of all job seekers. Employ’s 2025 report.

Other evidence points to possible effects on confidence and well-being in particular settings. Interviews in the Scottish government’s evaluation of Fair Start Scotland describe participants losing confidence, feeling apprehensive about applications or interviews, and struggling with motivation and organization in connection with mental-health difficulties. These are qualitative accounts from people in that program context, not population-wide rates. Scottish Government’s Fair Start Scotland evaluation.

A 2024 study record from Kyoto Bunkyo University describes a study of 146 Japanese university students. It found associations between job-hunting stress and mental-health measures, as well as between stress and career-choice self-efficacy. The sample is limited to those students, and associations do not establish that job hunting caused the measured outcomes or that the results apply to all job seekers. People do not start with the same time, health, or access

Advice to apply more, network more, or prepare longer can assume resources that a person may not have. The Fair Start Scotland evaluation records barriers including language, mental-health-related difficulties, and access to face-to-face services. Caring responsibilities, health constraints, and limited service access can also shape how much time or support someone can draw on; the Scottish evaluation’s findings should be read as examples from its participants, not as a measure of how common each barrier is.

That is why a difficult search should not automatically be read as evidence of poor effort or ability. A process can demand sustained organization and confidence while offering little feedback, and people face different conditions for meeting those demands.

What support can look like

Employment assistance is not limited to vacancy listings. Employment and Social Development Canada says 639,249 Employment Assistance Services were delivered in fiscal year 2024–25; services include job-search assistance, résumé-writing assistance, and career counselling. This is a count of services delivered, not people placed in jobs, and it applies to Canada rather than other countries. What is available and how to access it depends on location and eligibility. If seeking help, check the relevant public employment service or a local community organization for the actual services offered, whether appointments are in person or remote, and any eligibility requirements. The Canadian service total does not establish what is available elsewhere.

Making a search more manageable without blaming yourself

No single tactic removes the uncertainty, but it can help to make the process more visible and fit it to the time and energy available. These are practical ways to organize a search, not guarantees of faster hiring:

  • Separate tasks. Keep distinct time for finding roles, tailoring materials, and follow-up so that “job hunting” is not an endless, undefined task.
  • Track the process. Record the role, employer, application date, next step, and any stated timeline. This makes it easier to see what is pending without repeatedly reconstructing it.
  • Use job-fit criteria. Prioritize roles that match essential requirements and practical constraints rather than treating every listing as equally suitable.
  • Choose support that addresses the actual barrier. Résumé feedback may help with application materials; counselling or employment assistance may be more relevant when the difficulty is planning, confidence, or navigating services.
  • Adjust the pace to your circumstances. A sustainable routine is more realistic than a target that ignores health, care duties, language needs, or available time.
