The Magic Mouse still can’t be used while it charges. That’s the design flaw Apple should fix: preserve the touch surface that made the mouse distinctive, but let people keep working when the battery needs power. The Magic Mouse family began in 2009; the current USB-C version is a 2024 model, not an unchanged 17-year-old device.

What does “17 years old” mean for the Magic Mouse?

Apple announced the original Magic Mouse on October 20, 2009. Its defining idea was a continuous Multi-Touch top in place of separate mechanical buttons, a scroll wheel, or a scroll ball. Apple highlighted gestures for scrolling, panning, and swiping, and the original mouse ran on two AA batteries. Apple’s 2009 announcement described the surface as “a seamless Multi-Touch surface.”

The product line is 17 years old in 2026, but the current USB-C model is not. Apple’s specifications list the USB-C Magic Mouse as introduced in 2024. Reporting at the time says the refresh changed the connector while retaining the underside port placement; it was not a wholesale redesign. Apple’s current specifications identify the current model, while 9to5Mac’s 2024 report covers the refresh.

Why is the Magic Mouse charging port on the bottom?

Apple places the charging port on the underside. Its support instructions also say, plainly, “Magic Mouse is unavailable for use while charging.” That makes a low battery more than a charging pause: the mouse cannot remain in service with a cable attached. Apple’s charging instructions establish both the port location and the use limitation.

#1 Best Overall
Apple Magic Mouse - White Multi-Touch Surface
  • Magic Mouse is wireless and rechargeable, with an optimised foot design that lets it glide smoothly across your desk.
  • The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
  • The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.
  • It’s ready to go straight out of the box and pairs automatically with your Mac, and it includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.

The practical complaint is therefore not simply that the port is inconvenient to reach. Its placement prevents wired use during charging. The USB-C model includes a woven USB-C charge cable, but a different connector does not remove that interruption.

What is worth keeping about the Magic Mouse?

The touch surface is the reason a redesign should be focused rather than a rejection of the whole concept. The original design replaced discrete controls with a surface that accepts gestures, and the current USB-C model still has Multi-Touch. Apple lists Bluetooth connectivity and estimates about a month or more between charges; that is Apple’s estimate, not an independent battery test. The current specifications also list dimensions of 2.16 cm high, 5.71 cm wide, and 11.35 cm deep, and a weight of 99 g. Apple’s technical specifications provide these current-model details.

Apple Magic Mouse - Black Multi-Touch Surface

  • The Multi-Touch surface allows you to perform simple gestures such as swiping between web pages and scrolling through documents.
  • The rechargeable battery will power your Magic Mouse for about a month or more between charges.

Keeping gestures would preserve the product’s recognizable interaction while addressing its clearest documented interruption. This is a design recommendation, not a claim about Apple’s plans or the reason it chose the existing port location; no cited source establishes the company’s internal rationale.

How should Apple fix the Magic Mouse?

The essential requirement is straightforward: allow the mouse to work while it charges. Apple could achieve that with a usable charging connection that does not block normal operation; changing the port location is one possible approach, not the only one. The redesign should retain the Multi-Touch surface if Apple wants to keep the feature that distinguishes the mouse, while ensuring the charging arrangement no longer makes the device unavailable.

What to check if you are considering the current model

The current USB-C Magic Mouse is listed with Bluetooth, a USB-C port, an included woven USB-C charge cable, and an estimated battery life of about a month or more between charges. Apple lists Mac support beginning with macOS 15.1 and iPad support beginning with iPadOS 18.1; compatibility can change, so check Apple’s live specifications for your device and operating system before buying. The Apple Store US listing showed the black USB-C model at $99 when checked, but price and availability can change. See Apple’s US product listing.

If the charging interruption is a deal-breaker, compare alternatives by hand posture and grip, shape and height, charging usability, gesture or scrolling support, Mac compatibility, wireless connection, and current price. The available evidence here does not establish a specific competing mouse as more comfortable or better for a particular user, so treat those as criteria to check rather than promised benefits.
