Apple discontinued the Mac Pro in March 2026, and reporting says the company confirmed it has no plans for future Mac Pro hardware. For owners of the 2019 tower, the choice is no longer whether to wait for a refresh: it is whether the current machine still meets the workflow, or whether to move to a current Mac desktop without giving up capabilities the tower provides.
Why Mac Pro owners are facing an upgrade decision
Apple introduced the Mac Pro’s current industrial design in 2019 and updated it with M2 Ultra in June 2023. It did not replace the design between those releases. In March 2026, Apple discontinued the line; 9to5Mac reported that Apple confirmed it had no plans for future Mac Pro hardware. That makes an anticipated Mac Pro refresh an unreliable basis for planning a purchase or delaying a needed replacement. (9to5Mac, March 26, 2026)
The headline’s suggestion that customers are “desperate” to upgrade should not be read as a measured trend. Available evidence here does not establish how many owners are upgrading, how long they wait, or how widespread that urgency is. An owner asking whether a particular 2019 Mac Pro configuration is still worth buying in 2026 is an individual example, not a poll. (Reddit r/macpro discussion)

Apple’s September 22, 2026 announcement identifies Mac Studio and Mac mini as current desktop options. Its U.S. starting prices below are the amounts Apple announced on that date; they are not like-for-like configuration or performance comparisons with a Mac Pro.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERCHARGED BY M2 PRO — M2 Pro brings power to take on demanding projects. Its up to 12-core CPU makes pro workflows fly, and the up to 19-core GPU provides next-level graphics performance. It can be configured with up to 32GB of unified memory.
- CONNECT WHAT YOU WANT — Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip has four Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, Gigabit Ethernet, and a headphone jack. And if you want faster networking speeds, you can configure Mac mini with 10Gb Ethernet for up to 10 times the throughput.
- SIMPLY COMPATIBLE — All your go-to apps run lightning fast on your Mac mini desktop, from Microsoft 365 to Adobe Creative Cloud to Zoom. And over 15,000 apps and plug-ins are optimized for M2 Pro.
- EFFICIENT MEMORY — Unified memory on Mac does more than traditional RAM. A single pool of high-bandwidth, low-latency memory allows Apple silicon to move data fast — so everything you do is fluid. Choose up to 32GB memory with M2 Pro. More memory means easier multitasking and handling of large files.
- FAST SSD STORAGE — Mac mini comes with all-flash storage for all your photo and video libraries, files, and apps. Choose up to a whopping 8TB SSD with M2 Pro.
| Desktop configuration | Apple U.S. starting price announced September 22, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Mac Studio with M5 Max | $2,499 |
| Mac Studio with M5 Ultra | $5,499 |
| Mac mini with M6 | $899 |
| Mac mini with M5 Pro | $1,699 |
Apple calls Mac Studio its most powerful Mac. That positioning does not establish that it matches every Mac Pro setup: the right comparison depends on expansion cards, memory and storage needs, software, attached devices, and workload. Apple’s announcement supplies starting prices, but the sources available do not establish comparable performance benchmarks against a 2019 Mac Pro. (Apple Newsroom, September 22, 2026)
Check these six things before replacing or keeping the tower
1. Internal PCIe expansion
List the cards and other internal hardware your work depends on, then verify how each would connect to a proposed replacement. If a workflow relies on internal PCIe cards or tower-specific expansion, do not assume a Mac Studio or Mac mini is an equivalent substitute. Confirm that an external alternative, if available for your device, meets its requirements before committing.

2. Essential software and Apple silicon compatibility
Check whether critical applications, plugins, drivers, and hardware utilities run natively on Apple silicon or depend on Intel-only macOS software. Apple Developer’s September 1, 2026 notice says macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta. After that update, Intel-only apps will no longer run on Apple silicon, except for older, unmaintained games that use Intel frameworks. This is a migration concern for Apple silicon; it does not mean Intel apps stop running on Intel Macs. (Apple Developer, September 1, 2026)
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Memory and storage
Compare the amount of memory and storage your actual projects require with the configuration available on the desktop you are considering. Include working files, scratch space, archives, and any storage that currently lives inside the tower. Do not compare machines by starting price alone if the configuration needed for your work costs more.

- Touch Bar and Touch ID
- Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655

4. Ports and external devices
Inventory the displays, storage, audio gear, network connections, and other peripherals attached to the Mac Pro. Check the ports and connection requirements for the exact replacement configuration, including any adapters or docks your setup would need.
5. Current condition and the cost of extending service
Assess the tower’s condition and the cost and practicality of keeping it dependable for your workload. A working Mac Pro that supports required cards and software may remain useful; a machine with costly failures or an incompatible workflow may be harder to justify. The relevant comparison is the cost of maintaining the system against a suitably configured replacement, not age by itself.

- Performance: Up to 12,000MB/s real world PCIe Gen 3 speeds today and 26,000MB/s speed with PCIe Gen 4 systems
- Add up to eight SSDs for jaw-dropping storage capacity. Complete plug and play: No drivers needed
- RAID: Create, monitor, and manage RAID arrays with SoftRAID. Supports multiple RAID levels and RAID sets for maximum flexibility
- Compatible With Mac Pro and Mac Pro Rack 2019, (MacPro7,1) // PC Towers // Linux Systems
- 9 Year OWC Limited Warranty
6. Workload and total purchase cost
Start with the work you need the machine to do, then price a configuration that supports it. Include required memory, storage, connectivity, and any replacement peripherals. Apple’s announced starting prices are useful for identifying desktop categories, but they do not tell you the final cost for a specific professional setup.

Does a 2019 Mac Pro still make sense in 2026?
It can, if the tower is in good condition and its internal expansion or software compatibility is important to your work. Apple lists the 2019 Mac Pro, model identifier MacPro7,1, as compatible with macOS Tahoe 26. That is Apple’s published compatibility information at the time of this article, not a promise of support for later macOS releases. (Apple Support: Identify your Mac Pro model)

- Add up to 44TB of Storage- Mounts up to three cost-effective SATA drives(sold separately) inside. You get to choose the drives that suit your needs
- Mounts up to Three SATA Drives- Custom bracket and cables support one 2.5-inch SATA SSD plus two 3.5-inch SATA drives, or three 2.5-inch SATA SSDs.
- Vibration-absorbing isolators safeguard reliable disk operation whether in the studio or on the road; designed to make maximum use of the space and connections inside the Mac Pro.
- 2 Year Limited Warranty with Lifetime Technical Support
If you are considering a used 2019 Mac Pro, judge the specific configuration and condition against your needs rather than assuming that a low asking price makes it a bargain. The same checks apply: confirm essential app and peripheral support, identify expansion requirements, and account for the cost of the memory, storage, and maintenance your work calls for.
When Mac Studio or Mac mini is the better direction
A current Mac Studio may be the more relevant desktop candidate if your work fits an Apple silicon system and you do not depend on the Mac Pro’s internal expansion. Mac mini with M6 or M5 Pro is another current category to consider when its configuration suits the workload. Neither choice is automatically a drop-in replacement: verify software, memory, storage, ports, and device support for the exact configuration before switching. (Apple Newsroom, September 22, 2026)
For historical context, Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi described the thermal constraints of the 2013 Mac Pro in 2017: “I think we designed ourselves into a bit of a thermal corner, if you will.” That comment referred to the 2013 design, not the 2019 tower, and should not be treated as an explanation of the later model’s capabilities.
