The M5 MacBook Air is no longer an upcoming release: Apple announced it on March 3, 2026, with availability beginning March 11. The new lineup has 13-inch and 15-inch models, starts with 512GB of storage, and adds Apple’s M5 chip, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. Here’s what Apple confirmed—and what its performance claims do and don’t tell you.
When did the M5 MacBook Air come out?
Apple announced the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air with M5 on March 3, 2026. Preorders began March 4, and availability began March 11. It is a released product, not a model still awaiting launch. Apple’s announcement is the source for those dates.
What’s new in the M5 MacBook Air?
M5 chip and configurable graphics
Apple’s 13-inch technical specifications list an M5 chip with a 10-core CPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The base configuration has an 8-core GPU, with a 10-core GPU configuration also available. Apple lists 153GB/s of memory bandwidth, which it describes as 28% higher than M4. These are specifications and a manufacturer comparison, not independent performance-test results. Apple’s 13-inch technical specifications provide the configuration details.
512GB standard storage, with options up to 4TB
The M5 Air starts with 512GB of storage; Apple lists configurable 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB options. Apple says the new SSD delivers twice the read/write performance of the previous generation. That is Apple’s comparison, not a guarantee that every file operation will be twice as fast.

Apple lists up to 18 hours of battery life, Spatial Audio, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports that support up to two external displays. Its battery estimate comes from January 2026 testing on preproduction systems: wireless web use across 25 popular websites over Wi-Fi, or 1080p video streaming in Safari over Wi-Fi. Actual battery life varies with use and settings.

For the 13-inch model, Apple specifies a 13.6-inch LED-backlit IPS display at 2560-by-1664 resolution and 500 nits. The 13.6-inch figure is the diagonal measurement; Apple notes that the standard rectangular measurement differs from the viewable area because of rounded corners. The product is positioned around macOS Tahoe and Apple Intelligence. Apple’s 13-inch technical specifications list display and other technical details.

How fast is the M5 MacBook Air?
Apple’s performance figures are workload-specific “up to” comparisons against named older MacBook Air models. They are not independent benchmarks or a promise that every task will improve by the same amount.

All performance multipliers and the bandwidth comparison are Apple-reported figures from its 2026 launch announcement. They describe selected workloads and comparisons, rather than a general speed increase for all apps.
What did pre-launch reports get right or wrong?
A February 26, 2026 MacRumors forecast expected a chip-focused update in the same two sizes, an unchanged aluminum design, two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, unchanged entry pricing, and 256GB of starting storage. Apple’s March 3 announcement confirmed the M5 update, sizes, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports, but its announced U.S. starting prices were $1,099 and $1,299 and storage starts at 512GB. The forecast’s storage and launch-price expectations were therefore incorrect. MacRumors’ dated forecast should be read as pre-launch speculation, not a statement of Apple’s current plans.

Apple’s announcement did not confirm an OLED MacBook Air or the timing of a later redesign. Treat claims about either as unconfirmed unless Apple announces them.
What has Apple reported about the M5 Air’s environmental impact?
Apple’s 2026 product environmental report says the MacBook Air (M5) contains 55% recycled content and that supplier renewable-energy projects supplied 50% of manufacturing electricity. It lists 145 kg CO2e net greenhouse-gas emissions for the 15-inch, 512GB configuration—not for every M5 Air. The report says its data was current as of product launch and its evaluations are based on the U.S. configuration. Apple’s product environmental report contains the figures and scope details.
