The Long Dark: Iron Road launches in Early Access for Survival Mode on October 27, 2026. Hinterland’s expansion moves survival beyond Great Bear Island to Cauldron Island, a five-island caldera built around more than 100 kilometres of railway. At launch, players begin on Anna Island, restore a century-old prototype train and explore more than 30 kilometres of track while investigating the erased history of the McLeod family.

What Iron Road adds to The Long Dark

Iron Road is a digital Early Access DLC expansion sold through Steam. It is designed for Survival Mode rather than the separate story campaign. Hinterland describes the premise as: “Restore and activate a century-old train to travel deep along this forgotten caldera to uncover the mystery of McLeod’s failed empire.”

The expansion introduces a new survival loop: locate the hidden Prototype Train, repair it, supply it with fuel and water, activate its systems, upgrade components and use the railway to reach remote areas. The train is both transportation and a long-term restoration project, so progress depends on scavenging useful materials, maintaining infrastructure and deciding when a rail journey is worth the risk.

Hinterland’s announcement opens with “Welcome to Cauldron Island. Lost to history, hiding a mystery.” That mystery centers on an industrial scheme that was removed from the historical record after it failed.

Cauldron Island’s five-island map

Cauldron Island is a chain of five islands inside a volcanic caldera. A hydraulic train bridge connects the islands, but the entire chain will not be available on day one. Early Access updates are planned to unlock the later islands as development continues.

Island Access status
Anna Available at Early Access launch, with more than 30 kilometres of railroad
Stella Planned for a later Early Access update
Freya Planned for a later Early Access update
Morag Planned for a later Early Access update
Skye Planned for a later Early Access update

The complete setting is planned to contain over 100 kilometres of railway. The launch area therefore represents only part of the eventual expansion. Train repair sheds, fuel and water stations, switches, track sections and surrounding exploration regions form the infrastructure players must learn to use and maintain.

Can you drive the train?

Yes. The Prototype Train is a usable vehicle on Cauldron Island once you find, repair and activate it. Players can travel along the railway, upgrade train components and manage the supplies needed for operation. The train is not a general vehicle for Great Bear Island; its role is tied to Cauldron Island’s rail network.

A separate launch connection links the two settings. The Fulmar Autopilot Boat travels between Desolation Point on Great Bear Island and Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. This route provides the initial way to move between the established map and the new expansion area.

Launch content and new survival systems

Iron Road’s launch package combines the railway systems with new equipment, resources and customization options:

  • New clothing, food and tools for Survival Mode.
  • Safehouse customization items for preparing and personalizing shelters.
  • Train cosmetics for changing the appearance of the restored vehicle.
  • Stronger Aurora effects that alter the atmosphere and can affect how the new infrastructure is experienced.
  • A new Harpoon hunting option.
  • Train repair sheds, fuel and water stations, switches and track sections to support rail travel.

Some systems and items introduced in Iron Road are intended to return to the base game and Great Bear Island. The train itself is the exception: it is designed specifically for Cauldron Island and its railway.

The McLeod mystery and story setup

The historical thread begins with industrialist Hamish McLeod. He used properties on Cauldron Island in a whale-oil-powered industrial plan, but the enterprise failed and its history was erased. Hamish’s great-granddaughter, Alice McLeod, arrives to investigate the family legacy. The player continues that investigation while surviving the island chain and restoring the train.

This gives Iron Road a narrative structure different from a simple region expansion. Exploration, transport and equipment upgrades are tied to uncovering why the McLeod enterprise disappeared from public memory. The official material establishes the family investigation and central mystery, but it does not disclose the final explanation before launch.

What Early Access means at launch

October 27 is the start of Iron Road’s Early Access release, not the point at which every planned island and feature is complete. Anna Island and its more than 30 kilometres of track are the launch foundation. Stella, Freya, Morag and Skye are planned additions, with later islands unlocking through future updates.

That staged structure matters when judging the expansion’s scope. The advertised total of over 100 kilometres describes the full Cauldron Island railway, while launch exploration is limited to the portion available on Anna Island. Features marked as planned should be treated as future Early Access content rather than day-one access.

Does Iron Road work with Great Bear Island?

Iron Road connects to Great Bear through the Fulmar Autopilot Boat route from Desolation Point to Port Remnant. The expansion also introduces some systems and items intended to return to the base game and Great Bear Island. However, the Prototype Train and its rail travel are Cauldron Island features, not a new transport system for the existing Great Bear map.
