LifeStraw is a useful water-treatment product family, but the name alone does not tell you what a model removes. The original personal straw filters bacteria and parasites but not viruses; some LifeStraw purifiers are designed to remove viruses. Whether it deserves to be called an “invention of the century” is a judgment, not an established ranking.
What does LifeStraw actually do?
LifeStraw products use hollow-fiber membranes, but they do not all use the same filtration technology. The manufacturer describes microfilters with an absolute pore size of 0.2 microns and ultrafilters with 0.02-micron pores. The smaller pores enable ultrafilters to remove viruses, though they can require more pressure or filter water more slowly. Some advanced products also add carbon filtration or ion exchange for certain chemical contaminants; those features are not universal across the product line. LifeStraw’s technical explanation describes these distinctions.
Does the original LifeStraw remove viruses?
No. The manufacturer says the original personal microfilter does not remove viruses. Its product page lists reductions of 99.999999% of bacteria and 99.999% of parasites, as well as reductions of microplastics, dirt, sand, and cloudiness. It gives the personal straw a rated service life of up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 liters). These are manufacturer-published specifications for that product, not guarantees that every LifeStraw model has the same performance. See the original LifeStraw product specifications and the manufacturer’s FAQ on viruses and filters.

Which LifeStraw evidence applies to which model?
The World Health Organization’s 2015 evaluation classified the LifeStraw Family 1.0 as providing three-star comprehensive protection against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. The report was based on a desk review of existing laboratory data. It is evidence about the Family 1.0 specifically, not a rating for the original personal straw or every product sold under the LifeStraw name. Read the WHO LifeStraw Family 1.0 evaluation for the model and scope.
WHO also cautions that household water-treatment technologies must be used correctly and consistently to realize health gains. That makes the product’s instructions, maintenance, and suitability for the intended setting as important as a headline performance figure. WHO states this in its evaluated-products and household-treatment guidance.

How to choose a LifeStraw model
- Start with pathogens: Determine whether virus removal is needed; do not assume the original personal microfilter provides it.
- Match the setting: A personal portable filter and a household or community purifier serve different needs.
- Check capacity and operation: Compare the exact model’s rated filter life, flow, and usage instructions.
- Look for model-specific evidence: A WHO evaluation for Family 1.0 does not establish a rating for other LifeStraw products.
- Plan for consistent use: Follow the model’s treatment, cleaning, and replacement instructions.
Is LifeStraw the invention of the century?
There is no verified ranking in the cited sources that names LifeStraw the century’s greatest invention, nor do they establish a population-level impact figure for making that comparison. The phrase works as an opinion question: LifeStraw addresses a consequential need with portable filtration and a broader range of household purifiers, but its usefulness depends on choosing a model that treats the hazards in question and using it as directed.
For background, Vestergaard’s company timeline says LifeStraw was developed under its umbrella and is now a separate company. That history helps explain the product’s development, but does not prove a superlative ranking.
