The King of Fighters AFK is an idle RPG: build a fighter lineup, strengthen individual characters and roster-wide bonuses, and collect rewards as you progress. Start with the team slots your current Story Stage allows, then adjust placement and combinations for the fight in front of you. Netmarble expanded Story Stage deployment from five to nine fighters in its April 16, 2026 update, with additional slots unlocking as you advance.
How many fighters can you put on a team?
The game is promoted around 5v5 battles, but that does not mean every Story Stage formation is limited to five fighters. Netmarble’s April 16, 2026 update expanded Story Stage deployment from five to nine fighters; the extra slots unlock progressively according to stage progress. Check the formation screen for the slots currently available to your account, since deployment limits depend on mode and progression. What is a good beginner team?
There is no well-supported, universally best lineup to recommend without knowing your roster, unlocked slots, encounter, and current game balance. Build around the fighters you have and the formation space available, rather than chasing a single supposedly mandatory team.
- Cover useful roles: Consider a durable frontline, with damage dealers and support characters placed where they are less exposed. This is general formation advice from BlueStacks’ beginner guide, not an official rule that applies to every battle. Read the guide.
- Adjust placement for the encounter: Netmarble’s store listing highlights adapting placements and combinations. Try a different arrangement when your current formation stalls instead of assuming that adding power alone will solve the problem. See the Google Play listing.
- Consider synergy: Synergy Effects reward combinations, and Netmarble said the April 2026 update expanded their tiers. The notice does not provide a complete current synergy chart, so use the in-game information rather than relying on an unsourced “best synergy” list.
What should you upgrade first?
Balance improvements to your active fighters with systems that benefit the broader roster. BlueStacks’ guide describes two account-wide options: Codex collection bonuses and Influence stats. The guide’s priorities are suggestions, not official upgrade rules, and your best next investment depends on what is limiting your progress and which resources you can spend.

Build Codex collections
BlueStacks describes Codex collections as themed fighter sets that grant permanent stats across the roster. Its examples include Three Sacred Treasures (Kyo, Iori, and Chizuru), School Girls’ Union, and Orochi Clan. When considering a summon, check whether it helps complete a collection—but do not treat these examples as a guarantee that any particular summon is available or worthwhile now.
Use Influence for roster-wide stats
According to the same guide, Influence upgrades Attack, Defense/Penetration, and Health for the roster. It suggests prioritizing Attack and Health early, then adding Defense as enemies become tougher. Treat that as a starting point: if a specific bottleneck is stopping you, direct available currency toward the stat that addresses it rather than following a fixed order blindly.

Invest in the fighters you actually use
Individual fighter growth matters alongside account-wide bonuses. Use the characters that make your current formation work, and revisit the balance as new slots open or you acquire fighters that improve your options. The available sources do not establish exact upgrade costs, level breakpoints, summon probabilities, or a universal point at which to stop investing in a character.

How should you approach stage progression?
- Check the current stage and formation screen. Note the challenge and the number of deployment slots actually open to you.
- Fill available space with a workable combination. Keep frontline durability, damage, support, and any useful synergy in mind; adjust positions if a battle is not going well.
- Choose an upgrade that addresses the obstacle. Decide whether your lineup needs stronger active fighters or whether a roster-wide Codex or Influence gain is more useful.
- Return to collect idle and event rewards. Netmarble says fighters can continue getting stronger while the game is off, and the store listing also promotes login and event rewards. Check what is currently available in your game.
- Reassess as progression unlocks more options. Story Stage slots and team combinations can change as you advance, so a formation that worked earlier need not remain your only choice.
What does offline progression do?
The official site presents the game as allowing progress while you are away, with rewards available to claim and use to strengthen fighters. Treat this as an idle reward loop, not a promise that every battle or reward is completed automatically under all circumstances: return to the game and collect what it makes available. Events and login rewards can add further resources, but their availability changes over time.

Are the advertised rewards and purchases permanent?
