For most buyers choosing among the iPhones Apple lists in the U.S., the iPhone 17 is the balanced pick: it adds a 6.3-inch ProMotion display and dual 48MP cameras over the lower-priced 17e. Choose the 17e to spend less, the Air for a thin, light design, or an 18 Pro model for advanced camera controls. One timing note matters: Apple’s store listed iPhone Duo for preorder on October 16, 2026, so it was not yet available on the October 7 snapshot date.
This is a U.S. buying guide based on Apple’s store listing and announcement as of October 7, 2026. Apple’s displayed starting prices are not final totals: storage upgrades, taxes, carrier terms, and offers can change what you pay. Check Apple’s current iPhone store page before ordering.
Which iPhone should you buy?
| Model | Apple-listed U.S. starting price | Best fit | Key evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | $699 | Lowest listed starting price among these options | 6.1-inch display, A19 chip, single 48MP Fusion main camera, and up to 26 hours of video playback, per Apple. |
| iPhone 16 | $799 | Consider if you want a listed prior-generation option | Apple’s store lists the model and price; the available specifications here do not establish a detailed comparison with newer models. |
| iPhone 17 | $899 | A mainstream mix of display and camera features | 6.3-inch ProMotion display, dual 48MP camera system, A19 chip, and up to 30 hours of video playback, per Apple. |
| iPhone Air | $1,099 | Thin, light design with an A19 Pro chip | 6.5-inch display, titanium frame, single 48MP Fusion camera, and up to 27 hours of video playback, per Apple. |
| iPhone 18 Pro | From $1,199 | Advanced camera control in the smaller Pro size | A20 Pro chip, variable-aperture 48MP main camera, and three-camera 48MP Pro Fusion system. |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | From $1,299 | Pro camera features and the longest stated playback among these conventional models | Pro features and up to 45 hours of video playback for eSIM-only versions, according to Apple. |
| iPhone Duo | From $1,999 shown | Consider if you want a foldable iPhone and can wait | Apple’s store displayed “PRE-ORDER 10.16”; it was not available on the October 7 snapshot date. |
The table names seven options by counting the 18 Pro and Pro Max separately and including Duo. It does not mean all seven could be purchased on October 7: Apple’s store marked Duo for preorder on October 16. Prices are Apple-listed U.S. starting prices, not a guarantee of current stock or final cost. Check Apple’s live listing for current availability.

Spend less: iPhone 17e
At a listed starting price of $699, the 17e is the lowest-priced option in this comparison. Its single rear 48MP Fusion camera and display without ProMotion make its listed feature set simpler than the iPhone 17’s. That $200 starting-price gap is the trade-off: choose the 17e if the lower entry price matters more than a second rear camera and ProMotion.

Get the more capable mainstream package: iPhone 17
The iPhone 17 starts at $899 and adds a 6.3-inch ProMotion display and dual 48MP cameras compared with the 17e. Apple lists up to 30 hours of video playback, versus up to 26 hours for 17e. These are Apple-reported playback figures, not independent battery tests. Apple Support’s iPhone 17 technical specifications provide additional model details.
Prioritize a thin, light design: iPhone Air
Apple positions the Air around its thin, light form and lists a titanium frame and A19 Pro chip. Its rear camera system is a single 48MP Fusion camera, rather than the dual-camera setup on iPhone 17 or the three-camera system on the Pro models. “Pro” in the chip name does not mean the Air has a Pro camera array.

Choose advanced camera control: iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max
Apple’s 2026 announcement highlights the variable aperture on the 48MP main camera, an A20 Pro chip, and a three-camera 48MP Pro Fusion system. Pick the 18 Pro if you want those features in the smaller Pro option; the Pro Max starts $100 higher and has Apple’s longer stated video-playback figure. For eSIM-only versions, Apple states up to 36 hours for 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for Pro Max. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Apple also claims up to a 40 percent sustained performance gain over the prior generation, based on its testing of preproduction devices and software—not an independent benchmark.

Wait for iPhone Duo if the foldable form is the point
Apple showed Duo from $1,999 with a preorder date of October 16, 2026. On the October 7 snapshot date, that made it an upcoming option rather than a phone a buyer could order immediately. If you are reading this after the preorder date, verify the live store listing rather than relying on the earlier status.
What to compare before you pay
- Total price and storage: Starting prices do not include storage upgrades or taxes. Compare the configuration you actually need, not just the entry price.
- Display and size: The listed display sizes range from 6.1 inches on 17e to 6.5 inches on Air. The iPhone 17’s ProMotion feature is a specific distinction from 17e; do not assume display features are identical across models.
- Camera flexibility: The 17e and Air list one rear camera, iPhone 17 lists two, and the Pro models list three. A higher-performance chip alone does not tell you how many camera perspectives a phone offers.
- Battery figures: Apple’s video-playback hours are manufacturer estimates. They are useful as Apple’s own comparison, not as a promise of your real-world battery life.
- Purchase timing: Availability can change, and Duo’s listed preorder date was later than the October 7 snapshot. Confirm the live listing if timing affects your choice.

Prices and model availability are a U.S. Apple Store snapshot dated October 7, 2026, while the Pro pricing and specifications come from Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement. Apple’s claims about battery playback and sustained performance are attributed to Apple; no independent testing is represented here. Starting prices can change, so confirm them on the Apple Store.
