Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone story began with the Galaxy S in 2010 and grew into several distinct branches: the mainstream flagship S series, the large-screen Note with its S Pen, and the foldable Z family. The milestones below trace those best-documented branches—not every Galaxy model, regional variant, or entry-level phone.
When did the first Samsung Galaxy come out?
The first Galaxy S marked the start of Samsung’s flagship smartphone line in 2010. The dates associated with its debut describe different events: Samsung’s company history lists an unveiling on March 23, 2010; a later Samsung retrospective says it was announced in 2010; and Samsung’s 2015 account gives June 4, 2010, as its release date. Those dates need not conflict: an unveiling or announcement can precede a market release.
Samsung describes the original Galaxy S as having a 4-inch Super AMOLED display and a 5-megapixel camera. Its later technology retrospective identifies Super AMOLED as an important early differentiator for the series.

How the Galaxy S series evolved
Galaxy S has remained Samsung’s long-running flagship line, but its history is not a single-feature story. Samsung’s selected retrospectives describe successive changes to screen design, materials, cameras, charging, connectivity, and software. They also report substantial sales milestones, without establishing that any one feature alone caused the line’s success.

From early display emphasis to broader reach
Samsung’s 2015 retrospective says the Galaxy S III surpassed 40 million units in seven months after coming to market. The same account says combined Galaxy S sales passed 100 million after the S III launch. These are Samsung-reported historical figures, not an independent estimate of the whole Galaxy portfolio.
New materials, screens, and charging
Samsung identifies the Galaxy S6 generation with metal-and-glass construction and wireless charging. The S8 brought the Infinity Display, while the S10 generation offered multiple models and introduced Wireless PowerShare in Samsung’s account. These milestones show changes in design and charging as well as the ongoing expansion of the flagship range.

Connectivity and camera claims in the S20 generation
Samsung’s account of the 2020 Galaxy S20 generation highlights 5G across its models and 120Hz displays. It also lists a 108-megapixel camera and up-to-100x zoom claims for the S20 Ultra. Those are launch-era manufacturer specifications and marketing claims; they should not be read as a statement about how those phones compare with later models.

In 2011, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Note, combining a large smartphone display with an integrated S Pen. Its 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED screen was described in Samsung’s launch announcement as the largest in a primary mobile device at the time—a period-specific company claim, not a comparison with devices available today.

The Note broadened the Galaxy portfolio toward writing, drawing, viewing, and multitasking on a phone. Samsung executive JK Shin described its intended experience this way: “The artistic freedom of a paper notebook is coupled with the benefits of Samsung’s smartphone technology and services, allowing users to create, edit and share with more style than ever before.” That was Samsung’s launch description of the product’s aim.
How Samsung’s foldable phones began
The foldable branch added a different form factor to the Galaxy range. Samsung announced Galaxy Fold in 2019 as a device that could unfold from a phone into a larger screen for a phone-and-tablet-style experience. In 2020, the Galaxy Z Flip introduced a compact clamshell approach, folding vertically rather than opening like a book.

These designs represent a distinct direction from the conventional slab-shaped Galaxy S and the S Pen-centered Note. Samsung’s retrospective presents Fold and Flip as different ways to use a larger or more portable folding screen, rather than as interchangeable devices.
What the Galaxy lineup looked like in 2026
Samsung UK’s Galaxy S guide lists the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra, with an announcement date of February 25, 2026, and a release date of March 11, 2026. This is a UK-specific snapshot of the S series, not a worldwide chronology of every Galaxy model. Names, specifications, release schedules, and availability can vary by market and device variant.

What this history covers—and what it does not
The clearest documented milestones here concern the Galaxy S, Note, and Z families. They show the flagship line’s development, the Note’s stylus-oriented use, and Samsung’s move into foldables. Galaxy is a broader portfolio, however; this selected timeline is not a model-by-model account of Galaxy A or every regional and entry-level device. Samsung’s corporate retrospectives are useful for dating and describing its products, but company claims and superlatives are attributed to Samsung rather than presented as independent assessments.
