Concrete’s history is not just a story of stronger binders. It is also a story of how builders shaped structures around a material that can crack—and how engineers learned to understand those cracks. From early concrete and Roman mortar to reinforced concrete and modern fracture science, the central lesson is that a visible crack is evidence to interpret, not a diagnosis by itself.

Concrete existed long before Portland cement

A form of concrete was in use as early as 7000 BC, according to The Concrete Society’s history of concrete. That long prehistory matters: concrete is a family of materials made by combining a binder with aggregate, not a substance invented at one moment or by one civilization.

Roman builders used concrete in major structures, but they did not invent every form of it. Nor can the survival of Roman buildings be explained by a single secret recipe. A 2015 study of Imperial Roman architectural mortar examined how its constituents, moisture-permeated fabric, cracking behavior, and later cementitious reinforcement related to structural performance. The study’s broader point is that material behavior and architectural form worked together; it does not establish that Roman concrete universally outperforms modern concrete. Read the PNAS study.

How binder and structure changed

After the Roman era, development was comparatively limited until engineers began experimenting with cement compositions in the seventeenth century. Modern concrete emerged through successive changes in both its binder and its structural design.

Period Development Why it matters
Seventeenth century Renewed experimentation with cement compositions, after comparatively little development following the Roman era. Set the stage for later engineered binders. Source: The Concrete Society.
1820s Development of Portland cement. A key step in modern cement-based concrete. Source: American Concrete Institute (ACI).
Mid-1800s Steel reinforcement came into use. Reinforcement changed how concrete could be used structurally. Source: ACI.
Early 1900s Prestressed concrete developed. Prestressing added another way to design concrete structures. Source: The Concrete Society.
Twentieth century Admixtures expanded the range of concrete properties. Concrete could be adjusted for different performance needs. Source: ACI.

These milestones did not make cracking disappear. They changed what concrete could do and how structures carried loads, while leaving engineers with the need to understand how damage develops in the material and what it means for the whole structure.

Why a crack is more than a clean split

Concrete fracture is not always a single sharp break through otherwise undamaged material. ACI describes a fracture process zone: distributed cracking or damage around the tip of a continuous crack, where the material softens as fracture develops. The visible crack is therefore one part of a larger process, not necessarily the whole extent of the damage. ACI’s fracture mechanics report examines this behavior.

This perspective helps explain why a crack’s appearance alone cannot determine its significance. Different causes produce different cracking patterns and consequences. ACI’s technical literature treats fracture mechanics separately from its guidance on crack causes, evaluation, and repair, because understanding the material process and assessing a particular structure are related but distinct tasks.

Cracks can have different causes

Cracking may arise from mechanical demands or from material-related processes, including chemical reactions. NIST identifies unintentional chemical reactions that can cause serious cracking as an ongoing area of concrete and cement research. For concrete pavements, Federal Highway Administration guidance discusses multiple distress mechanisms, including ettringite-related processes. These sources establish that cracking has distinct origins; neither provides a way to diagnose an individual structure from a photograph or short description.

  • Material and chemical processes: Reactions within concrete can contribute to cracking. NIST’s concrete and cement research addresses this area.
  • Pavement distress: Concrete pavement cracking and related distress have multiple mechanisms. FHWA’s distress-mechanism guidance discusses them.
  • Structural context: A crack’s implications depend on the structure and the way it carries loads; the visible line alone does not establish cause or severity.

What the history means when concrete cracks today

The historical thread runs from early binders and Roman architectural forms through Portland cement, steel reinforcement, prestressing, and admixtures to modern fracture science. At every stage, concrete’s performance has depended on more than whether it appears intact: material behavior, environmental exposure, and structural form all matter.

That makes evaluation the necessary first step in repair. ACI’s crack-repair report is explicitly organized around causes, evaluation, and repair, and identifies topics such as resins and grouting. Those categories are not interchangeable fixes: a method must suit the crack’s cause and condition and the structure involved. A consumer concrete crack repair epoxy injection kit is one product category, not a universal remedy or a substitute for structural assessment. See ACI’s crack causes, evaluation, and repair report catalog.
