There is no single official answer to the greatest PlayStation game of every era. For a consistent starting point, this list uses Sony’s Japan-and-Asia player-voted generation awards for PS1 through PS4, then Sony’s latest cited PS5 game poll for a current-generation pick. The result is one defensible editorial selection—not a universal ranking.
How this list defines a PlayStation era
“Era” here means the five numbered PlayStation home consoles: PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5. Handheld systems are outside this list. Sony’s 2024 PlayStation Generations Awards provide a consistent basis for the first four picks: users in Japan and Asia voted among games that had previously won a PlayStation Partner Award. That is a meaningful player-voted signal, but it was neither an unrestricted worldwide ballot nor a vote covering every game released for each console. Sony’s 2024 award announcement explains the results and scope.

For PS5, the selection comes from a different exercise: Sony’s 2025 PlayStation Blog Game of the Year poll. Its annual result offers a current-generation snapshot, not a settled all-time verdict while the PS5 generation is still underway.

PS1: Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII is the PS1 pick because it won Sony’s 2024 generation award for the original PlayStation. That makes the choice easy to verify against the method used for the first four eras, without claiming that every player—or every critic—would put it first. If you are seeking the game named in the award, distinguish the original Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation from later remakes; they are different releases.

PS2: Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X won the PS2 category in the same 2024 award. Its place here reflects Sony’s eligible-player vote, not a claim that the award measured every PS2 release or reached every region.
PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots took Sony’s PS3 generation award. It is the list’s selection under the same criteria as the PS1, PS2, and PS4 winners.

Ghost of Yōtei earned Platinum for Best PS5 Game in Sony’s 2025 PS Blog Game of the Year poll. Sony’s communications manager Gillen McAllister introduced that post with, “Today, we reveal how your votes shaped the PlayStation Blog Game of the Year awards for 2025.” Sony Interactive Entertainment reported nearly 1.5 million votes across the awards’ 19 categories; that is the total across the poll, not a count for Ghost of Yōtei. Other PlayStation awards point to different answers
Different polls can produce different winners without contradicting one another: they cover different periods, categories, and eligibility rules. Sony’s Game of the Decade poll named The Last of Us its Platinum winner, with God of War and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt taking Gold and Silver. Its published top 20 also included Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Bloodborne, and Uncharted 4. Those results offer useful context for cross-generation retrospectives, but they are not a substitute for a console-generation award. Sony’s Game of the Decade results document that separate vote.
Annual awards are narrower again. In Sony’s 2020 poll, The Last of Us Part II won PS4 Game of the Year and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales won PS5 Game of the Year. Those are winners for a single year, rather than all-time picks for a console generation. Sony’s 2020 award results show that distinction.

What to play if you want to revisit PlayStation history
A “greatest” list can also be a starting point for exploring games beyond its winners. Sony’s Classics Catalog editorial highlights older titles including Resident Evil Director’s Cut, The Legend of Dragoon, and Tekken 2. That is evidence that Sony is spotlighting legacy games for current readers, not a guarantee that any title is available in every region or at every date. See Sony’s Classics Catalog editorial for its featured examples.
