Almost every game that “didn’t win Game of the Year” lost to one named award, in one named year, to one named jury. There is no single official Game of the Year, so any ranking of the greatest games that never took the top prize has to define the award before it names a game. This article sets that boundary first, then looks at four acclaimed titles that appear in named award records: Portal 2, Bloodborne, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Red Dead Redemption 2.
A full ranking of ten would need one award corpus and a verified nominee and winner list for each year. The records available for this piece support four strong cases rather than ten, so this article gives you the framework for judging the rest yourself instead of padding the list.

Which award is “Game of the Year”?
Several institutions hand out a top-game prize, and each defines it differently. Before a game can be said to have lost, you need to know which prize is meant.

| The Game Awards | Game of the Year, which the organisers describe as recognising the game that delivers the best experience across creative and technical fields | https://thegameawards.com/nominees/game-of-the-year |
| BAFTA | Best Game, described as “For the best game of the year, across all genres.” | https://www.bafta.org/awards/awards-information/games/ |

| Game Developers Choice Awards | Game of the Year, with a historical archive of winners | https://gamechoiceawards.com/game-of-the-year-award/ |
A game can therefore be a finalist at one body, an archived entry at another, and absent from a third. “Didn’t win Game of the Year” is only precise once you name the body.

Why award years do not always match release years
Award years and release years can differ. BAFTA’s entry information for its 2027 cycle says eligible games across platforms can be submitted, sets a UK release eligibility window, and automatically considers eligible entries for Best Game. A game released late in one calendar year may therefore be judged in the following award year. The full rules are on the BAFTA Games Rules page. When you attribute a result to a year, check that institution’s own archive for the year it uses.
How to judge “greatest” without pretending to objectivity
Award outcomes are documented facts. Ranking a game as one of the greatest is editorial judgement. The four cases below are judged on five axes, stated here so you can apply them yourself:
Rank #2
- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
- Award boundary: which named award the game lost, or whether it was never nominated for the primary award.
- Enduring craft: mechanics, level design, writing, audiovisual direction, or systemic depth.
- Distinctiveness and influence: what the game did that few others attempted.
- Recognition elsewhere: other award records or retrospective placements, labelled by body and year.
- Balance: era, genre, platform, and scale, so the list does not simply mirror one jury’s taste.
Four acclaimed games in named award records
The table shows which records the sources cited here document for each title. A blank-looking cell reads “not listed” and means the source set used for this article does not mention that record. It does not mean the game was rejected.

Portal 2
Portal 2 is the clearest example of a game recognised by a top-game competition without being the answer for the year that matters. Its place in the BAFTA Best Game archive and in D.I.C.E. finalist material shows serious institutional standing. What the records do not show, on their own, is whether it lost to a specific winner in a specific year. Check the BAFTA and D.I.C.E. entries for the year you are discussing before describing its outcome.
Bloodborne
Bloodborne’s record is spread across different kinds of recognition. A D.I.C.E. finalist placing, an entry in the Game Developers Choice Awards historical archive, and a place among the decade’s notable games in a PlayStation retrospective are three separate claims. Treat them separately. Together they show a game that many juries took seriously, but they do not add up to a single consensus verdict on its quality.
Rank #4
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 is the most useful case for understanding how a game can collect major recognition and still miss individual top prizes. Its D.I.C.E. finalist status, its Game Developers Choice Awards archive entry, and the PlayStation retrospective’s note that it won many awards in its release year all point the same way. The retrospective does not name which top prize it failed to win, so that detail has to come from the individual award archives.

Red Dead Redemption 2 appears in the Game Developers Choice Awards Game of the Year archive and in the PlayStation retrospective. This article does not assign it a runner-up status, because the sources cited here do not establish the exact year and outcome for it. Open the GDC archive to confirm both before describing it as a near-miss.

How to check any game’s award record
- Open The Game Awards Game of the Year nominees page and note the year, the nominees, and the winner.
- Open the BAFTA Best Game archive and find the same year. Note whether the game is listed as a nominee or winner.
- Open the Game Developers Choice Awards Game of the Year archive and check the year and outcome.
- Open the D.I.C.E. finalists PDF for the relevant year. Confirm that the year on the document matches the year you are using.
- Sort the game into one of three buckets for each body: won, nominated and lost, or not nominated. Only the first two are “didn’t win” cases, and only for that body.
